Day 2: bridging touch hand with touch nappy
Started where we left off last session with a couple reps of the touch. This will help get Hundee’s brain clocked in and get some muscle memory flowing.
I added some variation of hand position to add a level of proofing to the touch which took a couple of reps for her to grasp - I love to watch her problem solve!
Then once she got that, grabbed a handy dandy hand size nappy and began our bridging! I’ll admit, my brain was slow on marking as I missed her first rep which she performed 10/10 🤦🏼♀️ but hey! Even the professionals sometimes miss a beat, all you can do is carry on. Hundee is very forgiving of my mistake and we get in some good quick reps and some direction on the last and she felt more comfortable to touch the soft nappy with her nose as we progressed.
A for effort my girl 👏🏽

YOU CANT TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS
Or can you?
We’re wana put it to the test!
For a while now I’ve been pondering how to keep Hundee’s brain ticking as her body has slowed down this year, her eyes are a little more cloudy and her knees ain’t what they used to be.
So I thought of a handful of behaviours that may come in handy when inside the house and for our future.
And then it came to me 💡
I’m gunna teach my old dog a new trick.
I’m going to teach her..
How to find and retrieve me a baby nappy 🍼
A clean baby nappy of course without puncture holes or dog slobber.
And I’ve decided to record the journey as real time and transparently as I can.
My aim? to show owners that dog training can be as simple as this - an idea that sparked after a 45min death scroll on Tik Tok with no forward prep other than chopping up some left over dog roll in the fridge. You just gotta get up and do it.
So come along on our little trick training test and see if we really can, teach this old dog some new tricks! 🪄
Video #1. Dusting off the rust - markers & refreshing previously learnt behaviours
Train(ing) of thought: relearn touch command - then bridge touching hand to touching a nappy in hand
Tools: superior chunky dog role & my voice
Time of training session: 2-3min max
My aim in this session is to refresh both of our motor skills and practise behaviours we’re both familiar with to get the learning juices flowing.
I use Yes marker when she performs the behaviour correctly and use Wrong to reset her when she doesn’t get it quite right. When she performed the behaviour to a better than average standard I wrap up the training session and end on a positive. We did 2x 1.5min sessions in total.
There’s 101 more things I could describe happening in the video but for now, this is where we start.
Simple, quick fun with my nearly 11 year old Heeler and 30 week belly ☺️
Younger years spent doing the hard mahi so she can enjoy her senior years travelling the country 🫶🏽 #training4life
