🤢 Ticks. 😱 Yes we have the Brown Cattle ticks in Nelson and Tasman that feeds from our pets. Make sure your flea and tick treatment is up to date. These ticks were removed from one pet 🐾
Pets collect ticks when they brush against long grass or bushes where they wait for hosts to come by. They tend to latch onto skin. So check the belly, arm pits, ears and groin area where they tend to latch on. If you need advice to remove give us a call on 035441200.

🔥 Heatstroke Alert 🔥

We are seeing an alarming amount of dogs suffering from heatstroke over the past few weeks.

If an animal feels too hot for too long, they’re unable to maintain their internal body temperature. This can result in your pet becoming critically unwell, suffering from heatstroke, which can result in death.
Cats do a better job at maintaining their temperature and you will often find them seeking out shady cool spots during the day.
Remember all animals are different so there is no set temperature that is too hot. Things to take into account are your pets age, health and breed. Brachycephalic breeds are more at risk of heatstroke as they find breathing more difficult than other breeds so extra care must be taken.

🚨 Signs of Heatstroke 🚨

➡ Rapid breathing, or excessive panting/drooling
➡ Restlessness and unsteadiness
➡ Vomiting and diarrhea
➡ Abnormal tongue and gum colour - will appear blue
➡ Collapse

If you find an animal suffering from heat stroke:

➡ Move into shade or an air conditioned area
➡ Offer water to drink, but don't force it
➡ Soak the animal in cool water (using wet towels, do not immerse in water) and use air movement to help cooling
➡ Attempt cooling, and call the clinic ASAP

Have you started your Christmas preparations?
🎉Make sure you keep enjoying the festive season by ensuring you keep your pets safe.
🐶Around Christmas time vet clinics commonly see pets coming in for blockages from eating objects and toxicity from eating dangerous food.
🎁Ensure all presents are securely contained or stored out of reach from your pets
🎄Decorations are usually small but large enough to cause blockages, so ensure they are out of reach from your pet.
🍇Christmas food or ingredients in Christmas food can be harmful to your pet - particularly chocolate, raisins, fatty meat products, corn on the cob, skewered BBQ food and grapes are best avoided.
🔌Secure all electrical cords like fairy lights to avoid pets being able to chew on them
😺If you have guests around make sure your pet has a safe and quiet place to hide if they are shy.

There are lots of baby birds around at the moment, below is some information from the SPCA about what to do if you come across one 💕🐥🐥🐥

Spring is here which means it's a popular time for fledglings to appear in our gardens. 🐣

Please check out the photo below to know what to do if you find a baby bird and how you can best help these wee bubs.
