Voting for the NZ Bird of the year opened today https://www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/ we have our own dedication to our feathered friends here at Stoke Vets.

We had 3 blue consult room doors number 1, 2 and 3. These did not reflect the fun of our caring team and our lovely clients. Earlier this year we decided to name them after 3 beautiful native birds! BUT we have one boring blue door yet to be named. Get your vote in for the bird of the year competition by the 15th of September and let us know who you vote for to give us an idea of who could get the last position on our remaining consult room door! 🦆🦉🦅

Meet Billie Mae ❤
Beautiful Billie is a 7 year old Mini Schnauzer.
This lovely girl has been having a sore back on and off at home which has been worrying her owners.
To help us diagnose and treat any potential health condition she travelled with some of our wonderful vet team to have a CT scan. She was an amazing patient, brave and very well behaved especially when sedated! Gold star Billie!!!
P.S - peace of mind for Billie's family, results are a manageable condition going forward for her 🌸

Stoke Veterinary Hospital staff and clients are very grateful to welcome Emily Morphet to our local clinic and community.

Emily finished studying at Massey University in Palmerston North at the end of 2023.

She was welcomed onto our vet team as a new graduate veterinarian in January this year.

Bringing fresh enthusiasm and knowledge to our clinic, Emily has been a fabulous new addition for our team. Emily is developing numerous areas of interest as she finds her feet. Supporting Emily are our outstanding team of experienced vets, nurses/techs, and support staff.

Emily and her fiancé have recently purchased a new home in Nelson and are very much committed to the local area and enjoying all our amazing location has to offer.

She has met quite a few of our lovely clients over the past 6 months and would love to meet your family pet. If you are in the clinic and Emily is working, come and say Hi! or book an appointment to meet Emily with your patient.

Here is Emily, enjoying her recent graduation ceremony, outstanding achievement after many years of study.

Sharing your pets journey - together

We share just a small part of your pets’ lives. We may not see them very often through the years but appreciate every patient we see, respecting their place in your family. We want to support every step of their journey.

Our team celebrate every pet large and small as they bring love, companionship, and joy (sometimes a bit of cheekiness….). We are in an amazing position to watch their growth through life and the aging process.

Being spoilt often, we get delicious cakes and treats delivered from our pet caregivers, we are very thankful (see treats make everyone smile!)

Everyone here is so very touched with the thoughtful words in cards and in person we receive and take them as a reminder of why we come to work in the animal health field and love to take care of our communities’ pets.

Your kindness in words make the longest of days and dark nights after hours all worthwhile when we remember the impact our care has on the smallest family members. We love to hear stories and see photos of how enriched your lives are with your beautiful pets by your side.

We want to share some special words of thanks from a patient’s family we were able to assist and support over the course of many years. Really we were the lucky ones to have been able to take care of them and share health care and life decisions with their loving family. ❤

‘We will always be eternally grateful to you all for your medical expertise, care, and dedication our beloved pet received over the last 14 years’.
‘We miss them every day, they were such a blessing.’
‘You all enveloped us with your kindness and understanding, walking with us through those very difficult and heart rendering decisions as we farewelled our beloved pet.’

Thank you to each person, family and patient who come to visit with the team at Stoke Vet Hospital, keep coming and letting us have a wee cuddle and care for your beautiful animals throughout every stage of their lives. It truly is a privilege.

It is this evening for this community event. Beware fireworks noise travels far and is distressing for many pets.
Follow this great advice from the Nelson SPCA and get your pets tucked up and warm inside, especially if you are heading out to enjoy the event.

Multiple cases of this difficult to treat and often deadly disease have sadly presented at the clinic in recent weeks.
Please check your dogs vaccine status is up to date, call us to check if you are unsure 03 5477891
Parvovirus is transmitted through exposure to contaminated faeces on the ground, on bedding, blankets and bowls, between dogs or even just on the ground. Parvovirus is a very hardy virus that can survive for years in the environment. Indirect transmission can also occur if a person who has been with an infected dog strokes or pats your dog.
Prevention is the best cure and the vaccination for parvovirus is very effective at preventing the disease. This is especially important if they socialise at the dog park or beach, attend daycare or go to the groomers.
If your dog is a young pup reduce risk by following your vets recommended vaccine advice before taking your new puppy out to meet and greet new canine friends 🐶

Community information for Nelson following the recent cases of dogs testing positive for Babesia gibsoni in Canterbury NZ.
We are getting a few enquiries from our pet owners following the news release about Babesia gibsoni parasite, below is the information we accessed from the Ministry for Primary Industries and Biosecurity NZ.
We will update with more information when we have it, at this stage no cases have been identified in the top of the South Island

https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/exotic-pests-and-diseases-in-new-zealand/pests-and-diseases-under-response/babesia-gibsoni-a-tick-borne-parasite-affecting-dogs

What is it?
Babesia gibsoni is a parasite that mainly affects dogs. It is widespread around the rest of the world, including Australia. Infection with the parasite can cause disease which is known as babesiosis.
Parasite can cause anaemia, lethargy and other symptoms.
While most cases of babesiosis are without symptoms or mild, some can be severe.
It was found in a dog in Christchurch at the end of March 2024 and investigations revealed a second affected dog on 10 April.

How is it spread?
Babesia gibsoni is blood-borne and spreads where there is transfer of blood between dogs. It can be transmitted by ticks and the New Zealand cattle tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is capable of spreading it between dogs. Ticks that are exotic to New Zealand, such as the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) also spread this parasite.

Along with ticks, Babesia gibsoni can also be spread through dog bites, blood transfusion, and through the placenta from an infected mother to her pups.

What is Biosecurity NZ doing about the parasite?

Investigation is focused on how the dogs in Canterbury became infected and understanding if there are any other cases in the country.
The second case was discovered through tests on all close contacts of the original case. All other dogs have so far tested negative, including a dog from the same household as the first case.

Dog owners should ensure their animals' flea and tick treatments are up-to-date. Chat with our reception team if you are concerned your current parasite regime is not covering your dog for ticks.

The red blood cell parasite Babesia gibsoni has been detected in a dog in the Canterbury region. Find out about the parasite, what we're doing about it, and how you can help us.

HBC cat- a member of the public has just called to say that a long haired black cat has been hit by a car on Main Road Stoke near the fire station. They were unable to catch him and he has run off. He appears injured.
If you find him, please call us at the clinic and we will look after him. We are closed but on call and will come in to see him. Thanks.
