We treat your pets as if they were our own. We have been accredited at this level since March 2000. Our pets are very good at masking pain and illness.

Halifax Veterinary Centre is the first veterinary practice in New Zealand to be be accredited to the top level (Hospital Standards) of the New Zealand Veterinary Association's quality assurance program โ BESTPRACTICEโข. Everything at Halifax Veterinary Centre is centered on improving the the relationship you have with your pet. More than twenty years ago we set the scene for the Halifax Veterinary
Centre of today when we made that relationship the heart of our mission. Our mission: โto enrich our community by enhancing the relationship people enjoy with their pets, by helping them live happier, healthier and longer lives.โ
That means we have to be much more than than an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. We need to be proactive and prevent problems or at least detect them early. They don't complain like people would. Many pet owners don't look in their pet's mouth, or don't know the significance of what they are seeing
Many hundreds of pets in each veterinary practice in NZ suffer the consequences of poor oral health. Hundreds have unrecognised or untreated musculoskeletal pain. Scores are rehomed or killed because of behaviour issues. Scores have the gritty eyeball discomfort of early 'dry eye' (KCS). Hundreds have lives shortened by the effects of obesity. Scores succumb to chronic renal failure much earlier than if this disease had been detected early by screening tests. Scores have grumbling liver disease. It doesn't have to be that way! Starting out right is important. A foundation of good behaviour training. Sound nutritional advice. Keeping your pet healthy and 'nice to be near' with parasite control, skin care and good oral health. Maintaining a healthy weight and good mobility Growing old gracefully and without pain. Regular checkups are important, more so as your pet moves into middle age at 6-8 years. We will recommend screening tests to detect unseen problems early. We see our role as your partners in your pet's care, sharing our knowledge with you. A feature at Halifax is open-ness. All our open hours are visiting hours. Clear sightlines mean you can see through to our treatment areas from reception. Our policy is that all clients get a complete set of case notes after each visit, in hard copy or by email.

๐ฅ๐ถ Did You Know Some Nuts Can Be Harmful For Your Pets? ๐๐ฅ
๐ซ Macadamia Nuts: Danger Signs
Watch out for symptoms like lethargy, tremors, vomiting, pain, and increased temperature in dogs after ingesting macadamia nuts. Signs can appear as early as 3 hours post-ingestion, and it may only take 5 nuts for medium-sized dogs to show symptoms. If your dog has ingested recently, we can help induce vomiting and with supportive care, most dogs bounce back within 1-2 days. Cats seem to be smart about avoiding these nuts!
๐ฅ General Nut Warnings
Nuts, especially if eaten in large quantities, can lead to pancreatitis due to their high-fat content.
Nuts, especially if still in their shells, pose a risk of gastrointestinal obstruction - often resulting in urgent surgery.
๐คข Beware of Mouldy Nuts!
Mouldy nuts can contain neurotoxins that induce tremors and convulsions, posing a life-threatening situation. Immediate and intense treatment is necessary.
๐ Emergency Action!
If you suspect your pet has indulged in any nuts, don't hesitate to call our clinic urgently for advice.

Many dogs suffer from pain in their joints and reduced mobility. This can be due to many things such as age related changes, breed propensity, damage from previous injuries or surgical procdures earlier in life. Six months is a long time in 'dog years' so we highly recommend completing our FREE Canine Mobility Assessment at least twice a year. This will help us keep on top of any pain and prevent or slow the progression of Osteoarthritis by making simple lifestyle adjustments and instituting treatment as necessary. Simply head over to https://halifaxvet.co.nz/quiz/halifax-vet-canine-mobility-assessment/ and complete the quiz to participate! With the colder weather drawing in, some of our senior citizens will be starting to feel that wintery ache in their ageing joints. Cats in particular are especially skillful at concealing pain and so we highly recommend completing our FREE Feline Mobility Assessment at least once every 6 months. This will help us keep on top of any pain and prevent or slow the progression of Osteoarthritis by making simple lifestyle adjustments and instituring treatment as necessary. Simply head over to https://halifaxvet.co.nz/quiz/halifax-vet-feline-mobility-assessment/ and complete the quiz to participate! Did you know that the best age to neuter your dog depends on their #breed and gender? ๐ค Neutering (including spaying) is common practice for dogs but research suggests that it may be associated with increased risks of joint disorders and some cancers for certain breeds. ๐ฑ These joint disorders include hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tear or rupture, and elbow dysplasia, while the cancers include lymphoma, mast cell tumor, hemangiosarcoma, and osteosarcoma. ๐ Previous studies showed that #GoldenRetrievers, #LabradorRetrievers, and #GermanShepherd #Dogs neutered before a year of age had increased risks of joint disorders. Additionally, female Golden Retrievers had an increased risk of cancers when neutered at any age. ๐ข To help pet owners make informed decisions, the same data was collected and analyzed for an additional 29 breeds, plus three varieties of #Poodles. The results showed major breed differences in vulnerability to neutering, both for joint disorders and cancers. For most cases, neutering at a specific age does not increase the risks of joint disorders or cancers. However, there were a few small breeds, such as #BostonTerriers and #ShihTzus, that had a significant increase in cancers. ๐จ To assist pet owners and veterinarians, guidelines have been created that outline the age of neutering for each breed and sex that avoids increasing the risks of joint disorders or cancers. ๐ก You can check these out in full at https://www.researchgate.net/publication/342751264_Assisting_Decision-Making_on_Age_of_Neutering_for_35_Breeds_of_Dogs_Associated_Joint_Disorders_Cancers_and_Urinary_Incontinence. Vet staff get weird around food. Might have been a bit mean not to tell them it was a video, not a photo, but the results are worth it. THANK YOU so much to the lovely client who dropped all these delicious treats in for the team.
Happy birthday Hans! We hope you'll all join us in sending the warmest wishes to Hans this weekend as he celebrates the big 7-0! Monty is a gorgeous 17 month old Border Collie who was attacked by a spicy sky raisin while playing innocently in the park! Mum noticed that her super sweet boy was becoming quite swollen around the muzzle and so called us immediately as she knew that bee stings can be quite serious. Vet Nurse Vania told her to come straight down and performed a triage assessment on Monty as soon as they arrived to make sure he wasn't having an anaphylactic reaction to the bee venom. Once it was determined he wasn't in immediate danger he and his Mum had a short wait until Dr Dom was free to examine him. After a thorough examination, observation and the administration of some meds to make him more comfortable Monty was able to call it a day and head home. Hopefully his taste for bees has been satisfied now, once and for all! #beesting #bordercollie #emergencyvet #puffy #blackandwhitedog #dogsofinstagram #triage #whatvetnursesdo
Welcome to our #Wellness Room. We are so proud of this space. The separate garden entrance is fantastic for #pets who are nervous, noisy or fearful around others and also provides privacy for owners during difficult times ๐ฅน Weโve worked really hard to create a space that is relaxing and as non-clinical as possible. This works well for our #massage and #behaviour consults and can even help owners who have had bad experiences in a vet clinic to feel more at home. We provide it to our team as a haven to escape the busy (and sometimes stressful) day and take five minutes to themselves. A lot of thought and love had gone into this room, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Be sure to let us know when youโre booking in if youโd prefer this space to a regular consult โค๏ธ Hint: if you have a cat who gets scared in the waiting room, an old dog who prefers the couch to the floor, a pet bed ho isnโt great around others or a noisy Nellyโฆthis could be the answer to making your visits that little bit easier #whatvetsdo #whatvetnursesdo #peace #quiet #petcare #petstagram #catlovers #dogsofinstagram
