Spring calving '24 in full swing in the North Island with the South Island not far behind. It's been a challenge keeping up with the demand for Calf Xtreme and BioRescue this year. More than ever this year, we've experienced the great qualities of our dairy farmers in supporting us even when it's been a struggle to supply on time. Farmers becoming friends.

The feedback on this electrolyte was so good that we took over the company to keep it going.

Featuring a couple of unique compounds to stand out from other electrolytes, Guar Gum which slows the passage of fluids down through the gut while providing a coating effect on inflamed mucosa and Digestron800, a combination of 8 strains of probiotic bacteria.

If you need an electrolyte for your calves, this is the one to have on board!!

Within five days of picking up her calves in August 2020, Taihape farmer Sandra Fannin knew she was going to have trouble. “We had tummy upsets, one calf went down quickly, and we lost it overnight. They smelt terrible and very quickly they were all sick – it was the beginning of a nightmare,”...

What about Rotavirus?
No matter what practices and precautions you have in place, sometimes Rotavirus just happens - nearly 50% of cases of scours in calves in NZ can be attributed to Rotavirus!

Cold, damp days or even dehorning can be enough to allow viruses to take hold. Did you know that much of the calf’s defense systems are reliant on the bacteria in their gut and that bacterial makeup is altered in times of stress?

Early action is key! Don’t wait and see!

👉 BioRescue paste has proved to have a huge impact on calves that are ‘off’ in many ways. In most cases, a single dose is all that calves need and many early stages of possible infection can be turned around. The combination of Vitamin E, 7 strains of probiotic bacteria and live active yeast in BioRescue covers a broad approach. Keep some teat wipes or other disinfectant on hand to clean the nozzle between treatments!
👉 Calf Xtreme has been credited by many calf rearers as allowing calves to push through cases of Rotavirus with good success. Doubling or even quadrupling the dose is recommended for a few days and will generally see calves continue to drink milk and recover really well once they’re out the other side. If you’re putting bacteria up against a virus, you need to make sure it includes a range of bacterial strains including those that are shown to modulate the immune system and you need to make sure there are big numbers!!
👉 Calves can become dehydrated and this is the leading cause of calf mortality. Rotavirus destroys the cells that line the surface of the small intestine which reduces absorption of nutrients and fluid loss. Feeding electrolytes is essential for calves that may be dehydrated. With plenty of electrolytes available on the market, it is hard to look past BioCalf Electrolytes in terms of ingredients on paper so make sure you’re using the best!
👉 Having a zeolite or humate product available can help bind the gut and protect from further intestinal damage.

It’s often a bit demoralizing when you have done everything you and then calves still get sick. We’re here to help your calves, your stress levels and build your confidence in what good bugs in their billions can do!

When you come on board with Probiotic Revolution, we would like to think you're doing more than just using our products but you're becoming part of something.

We believe there's more to discover as we journey through understanding what probiotics can do in our ruminants. Most things in ruminants are centered around their fermentation system in the gut in which everything is based around microbes after all!!

If we haven't connected with you yet, we hope to soon. Getting to know you, your business and your animals is important to us and helps us as much as we might be able to help you.

So welcome to those who are new and thank you to those who continue to be 'part of the revolution'

If you would like to connect with the real experts, we have a private Facebook users group where questions are asked and knowledge/experience can be shared.

It can be wild out there!! (Read to the end to hear the secret behind this post!)

If you've ever seen a probiotic with yeasts (plural) on the label then you can be sure that these are just wild yeasts picked up in the fermentation process.

The yeast we use is built different. It's a single strain purified yeast selected for its outstanding performance in animal feed and using it as part of a balanced diet for dairy cattle is an economical way to improve milk efficiency, and profits.

Adding P7 to the diet of dairy cattle helps control acidosis, boosts fiber digestion on high starch diets and increases milk fat yield. Procreatin 7 works differently than a rumen buffer to stabilize the rumen. As a yeast probiotic, it lowers the redox potential in the rumen. A lowered redox potential in the rumen stimulates the conversion of lactic acid to propionic acid. This conversion of lactic acid to propionic acid will increase rumen pH. A higher rumen pH means better fiber digestion, and better protein and starch digestion. This results in a healthy rumen, and a healthy cow.

P7 is dried using special patented proprietary processes that maintain a high cell count. Each batch produced is analysed to ensure compliance with microbiological, physical, chemical standards, and fulfil the minimum guaranteed number of cells per gram or cfu as we measure by!

And yes, this post was really an excuse to share a picture of our team member Matt's sourdough bread!!

As calving begins to kick off around the country, here's a quick reflection to sum up what our farmers experience using Calf Xtreme.
1. Calves are able to go OAD from at least 7 days old (many find that's so easy they can go earlier).
2. Calves will drink more volume early
3. Our Calf rearers are always surprised at how content and happy Calves can be on OAD.
4. Increased meal consumption.
5. Shiny coats
6. Clean bums
7. Calves start grazing like mini cows.
8. Watch your calves grow like mushrooms.
9. Save 1 - 2 weeks on time till weaning.

What's the biggest thing for you?
Did we missed anything?

Breaking news!!

Don't be fooled by fancy flyers!!

We don't tend to focus much on what other suppliers are doing but when new research comes out sometimes you can't ignore it!!!

One of our liquid probiotic friends who only deliver 300 million cfu per dose (Calf Xtreme = 12 billion, Rumicell = 38 billion for reference) just released their latest peer reviewed trial work.

"Adding the direct-fed microbial had no significant effect on feed intake, milk yield, feed conversion efficiency or Methane parameters."
SIDE NOTE: this product is still being promoted as reducing Methane intensity by 7.5%, increasing body weight by up to 21%, producing 10.1% more milk 🥛 🤯🤷🏼

"Body weight gain was not affected by treatment"

The pH values of ruminal fluid samples collected 4h after the start of feeding were not affected by treatment"

"Treatment also had no affect on ammonia"

"Most individual VFA proportions were not affected by treatment"

If you're interested, we could dilute Calf Xtreme by 8.8 times and it will only cost you less than 2c a day but will still have digestive enzymes and live active yeast.

OR we could dilute Rumicell out by 126 times and it will cost you less than 0.1c/cow/day!!

Who are we?

Probiotic Revolution is a kiwi owned family business specialising in the highest quality probiotic supplements for animals.

Chris Collier (B Agr Sc) who founded Probiotic Revolution Limited has an extensive background working in the dairy industry for over 40 years, firstly as a Farm advisor/consultant working for MAF and Agriculture New Zealand and later selling prescription animal remedies to vets for Pfizer Animal Health. Chris has always been an innovator and in the early 90’s was part of the team that helped in the release of the Argentine stem weevil wasp into NZ.

The intriguing science behind these probiotics has seen Chris’ son Matt come on board in 2017. Matt has been a Medical Scientist for over 15 years and is passionate about getting the message of good bacteria out there. Head over to our what is the probiotic revolution page to learn more. With his analytical background, Matt is also keen to test things out with where we can expand the ways in which probiotics can be used to see beneficial results. Watch this space!!
