For those with questions about caring for or riding your horse during the lock down.
Ok, so there is a lot of confusion, conflicting information, and what we can only describe as social shaming out there regarding riding and other exercise pursuits that can be considered high risk, during the lockdown/rahui.
The MPI adviser for the animal welfare sector, Penny Timmer-Arends, has advised that if you are caring for your horse directly, you MAY RIDE YOUR HORSE WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE PROPERTY ON WHICH IT IS KEPT. Do NOT transport your horse to ride somewhere else. As we've previously noted though, maybe don't ride if you are nervous, or your horse is green/feral/young.
You can travel to care for your horses if they graze elsewhere, but if they can be cared for by the owner of the grazing facility, then you should stay at home. If you do need to leave your house to care for your horse, you must take the necessary health measures, travel in your private vehicle alone or with other members of your isolation bubble, and use your own grooming kit, tack and other equipment. Liaise with the property owners to ensure there are minimal interactions between grazers. If there are shared areas at the facility, use good hygiene practices around door handles, gate latches and the like.
Stay safe everyone. And be kind.
