Join our local poultry club to see the best chickens, ducks, pigeons and cage birds on display!

What to do with all those fallen leaves?

Heather Loughlin has turned Amberwood Garden into a refuge for bugs and birds with this simple technique.

1. Gather them all and spread them on a large patch of lawn. When gathering leaves, I leave a strip of fallen leaves all around the perimeter of garden. This is then an undisturbed spot for insects to live until our mulched leaves settle.

2. Mow the spread leaves, over and over until quite fine. I use the catcher to stop them flying everywhere. Their volume will dramatically decrease.

3. When suitably fine, spread as a lovely mulch between plants. This will conserve water and suppress weeds and gradually break down into beautiful soils over time. I add a little compost to help this along.

The best time to plant native trees in New Zealand is during the cooler months of autumn (April to May) or late winter to early spring (August to September). Planting during these months allows the plants to establish themselves before the summer heat.
The Whakatipu Reforestation Trust in Queenstown shows us the best native shrubs and trees to plant as long-term food sources for New Zealand's precious native birds.

- To encourage insect populations, plant hebes, koromiko, native jasmine, putaputawetā.
- To feed fruit-eating birds, plant coprosma, five finger, makomako (wineberry)
- For nectar-sippers like the tūī, grow kōwhai, harakeke (flax) and rāta

Native plants are both beautiful and beneficial. The Whakatipu Reforestation Trust in Queenstown shows us the best native shrubs and trees to plant as long-t...
