Our February Puppy Class has just had their graduation. Puppy classes are a great way to get off on the right foot with a new puppy. It introduces you to training techniques, socialises the puppies, and helpful to answer some of those questions that we just aren't sure of.

Hope you all enjoyed the Veterinary Centre - By The Big Blue Cross Pet Tent at the North Otago A&P show! I am sure we were the most popular site at the show and it was great to see you all there.

We were luckily enough to have puppies, guinea pigs, ponies, bunny, & lambs, and there was a huge number of familes through, with puppy cuddles, stroke the ponies and pet the guinea pigs all very popular. It was so great to see the interaction between all the pets, and the kids & adults alike!

Big thanks to Happy In Hooves for the ponies, guinea pigs & bunny. and to Kevin Thompson for the 14 puppies (I was so relieved to do a head count at the end of the day and still had 14!). 🙂

A bit of an equine update! I hope everyone is enjoying riding this summer and managing the grass growth alright. There are some challenges to be had with the green flush that we keep getting after the rain (good for the farmers, not so good for our ponies and horses!).

Liz Paton has been enjoying working with the Veterinary Centre team over the last 6 months and seeing a range of equine cases. For those who don’t know Liz, she has post-grad qualifications in equine dentistry and her dental service involves sedation of horse, oral examination with light and mirror, and rasping using a power float. Liz's service utilises a very safe sedation protocol which has the advantage of providing a higher level of dental care with many flow on benefits. If you want to know what is going on in your horse’s mouth, then we really need to sedate. If there are health concerns, then sometimes Liz can address those rather than sedating.

Liz can also do dental radiographs but only at our clinic facilities. These images can be so helpful in working up tricky cases!

Liz is organising a few dental runs in the following weeks: Palmerston/Waikouaiti on Wednesday 15 January, Oamaru on Wednesday 22 January and Middlemarch on Wednesday 29 January.

If people are willing to bring their horses to a central location, we can do a discount (at least 6 horses per location), otherwise Liz is happy to go from property to property. Please contact Veterinary Centre Ranfurly on 03 444 1020 to arrange an appointment.
