🤬 Horrific cruelty results in a wee fine. This is so disturbing, what is wrong with some people? My heart aches for animals that suffer at the hands of sick cruel creeps like these. 🤬💔

'It's still alive': Farmers skinned still-breathing cow and livestreamed it on Facebook | The Press

The Ashburton farmers initially denied they knew the cow was alive. But the livestream recording gave them away.

⚠️ Dogs die in hot cars - don’t risk their lives ⚠️

Despite SPCA reminding dog owners of this important message every year, cases of dogs left inside cars still make up a staggering 10% of all welfare complaints we receive over the summer months. The message just isn’t sinking in.

In a recent case, one of our Inspectors was alerted to a dog left inside a hot car in Wellington. While it was 22 degrees outside, the temperature inside the car had skyrocketed, and the dog was showing signs of severe heat stress (panting, drooling, and shade-seeking on the floor).

The owner was located, and showed no concern for the welfare of their dog. Despite the owner initially protesting, our Inspector managed to remove the dog, provide it with water, and issued the owner with a $300 fine.

Read more about this story, and find downloadable resources (including a handy flyer to keep in your car to distribute as needed) on our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/dont-risk-their-lives

Help us to spread the word - parking in the shade and cracking the windows isn't good enough. If you love them, don't leave them 💙

↔️ Keep not only your pets, but all animals as comfortable as you would like to be!

💚 PROVIDE SHADE and FREEDOM to move if they choose. Provide plenty of fresh water, frozen water bottles (good for small animals to be near), cooling mats, frozen kongs.

💧 SCRUB & CLEAN WATER BOWLS/TROUGHS. Ensure fresh clean water is available at all times. Do this for ALL animals. Too often we see filthy water supplies. 🤢

🥵 Ensure your dogs take it slow - many will excitedly run around playing/fetching. They'll keep going and get heat stroke. YOU need to set a slow pace for your pooch to follow, give them plenty of time to sniff out new scents. ➡️ Only walk your dogs early morning or evening when it's cooler. Even at temperatures as low as 20°C (70°F) dogs are at risk of heat stroke. ⬅️

Pavements, sand, metal, ute trays, and other surfaces can burn paws. 🥺

Check that they are not overheating if kennelled / chained, it may be shady in the morning but way too hot and uncomfortable during the day.

Everyone knows not to take them shopping or out and about in the car, surely?
Even on cooler days....when the sun pops out, the temperature can rise very quickly. People say oh but he has water, and a window down...the poor dog is panting and looking heat stressed. 😵‍💫
👉 It's too hot in there, leave them at home where they can keep cool.
👉 Do you know what to do if you see a stressed dog in a car?

Keep coats/fur well groomed. Flea and worm!
Put a bowl of water out for wildlife.

💛 Very thankful for the heat pump at my house, keeping the foster dogs cool.

🩷 Adopted! 😍 Deb ✨️🐾
Deb is super special. Not only because she is Candy's daughter, but she is also very lucky to be alive. Just over a year ago she was taken to the Vet, she was in a lot of pain and could barely walk. She had an infection in her spine - discospondylitis. Her paws were also very badly infected. She had suffered for a long time. When her condition improved (in vet care) she was surrendered by her owner and we took over her care.

👉 There is no cap on the number of dogs a person can have when living rurally. If the dogs are watered, fed, sheltered and registered, it's legal.
You can be a hoarder and keep on breeding more pups and dispose of any unwanted pups. You can have over 100 dogs and refuse to get them neutered, even when it's offered to you for free. 😔

Anyhoo, a super happy outcome for Deb, she's in a wonderful forever home!

"Deb is great. She has been on lots of adventures over to the West Coast.

We do daily walks at the river here and she really likes “supervising” her new sister who loves playing fetch. “Supervision” involves barking and chasing her like a crazy thing and pretty much trying to herd her which is hilarious to watch. She has a fancy new bed that she loves.

Deb is such a good girl, so chill and well behaved. We love having her! More people should adopt older dogs, they are so very special."

❤️ Thank you for adopting our precious girl. ✨️ Thank you to the foster carers that were a huge part of the successful outcome for Deb. 💛✨️🐾

❤️ Adopted! Luna (was Nanook) ✨️🐾

Luna came from a breeder in the North Island, she was sold and flown down to Christchurch. Her new owners reached out to us after they had a change in circumstances and needed her to go asap. Fast forward and here's an update from her forever family:

It'll be 8 weeks this Thursday since we picked up our girl Luna, and what a wonderful 8 weeks it has been! She has slotted into our life and home perfectly and is totally settled now!

She is such an outgoing, confident and energetic girl, but she is a little softie at heart who can't control her bum wags when Dad comes home from work, and loves a good cuddle! She adores our son and loves to get up to mischief with him...they tend to egg each other on! She also gets on well with our other dog Pippa who she loves to chase at the park.

I've been dedicating a lot of my time to training her (wow she is smart!) and she has come a long way in such a short time which is so amazing to see. She has grown a lot too, people can hardly believe that she's only 6 months old, she's going to be a big girl! All in all, things are going great and we can't imagine her not being in our lives!

Thank you for letting us adopt her, we are all so excited for the future adventures that lie in store for us in the years to come!

Andrew, Catriona, Logan, Pippa 🐾 & Luna 🐾

❤️ Thank you for adopting - again! ✨️
Thanks also to her foster carer! 😍

Details we have been given:

Frankie, 4½-yr old female chocolate Miniature Schnauzer
Spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated.
Located Ashburton

Frankie has a big personality and is bursting with a love of life.
She is sweet, loving, and a little independent (that’s her schnauzer charm showing!). She knows her basic manners and she’s great on the lead. She loves her daily walks - 4km and she joins a weekly dog pack walk too. Loves playtime, she is such a fun dog, very loving.

At home, Frankie is a dream companion. She’s crate trained, sleeps soundly all night, and has her own spot under the desk while you work. She’s currently on Hill’s c/d Urinary Care diet after a previous bladder stone issue but is in great health and happy as ever.
Frankie would thrive in a home where she’s truly part of the family — ideally with someone who works from home or is home for part of the day. She’s wonderful with dog savvy kids of all ages and loves being included in everyday life.

Like any good schnauzer, she has her signature bark, but she’s responsive and quick to quiet with a gentle cue - this will require ongoing training and attention. Cat and chicken free home only.
This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but we want Frankie to find her perfect match — an active family who will make her the shining star of their world.

Application process includes -
Adoption application form
Property Visit
Vet history check of previous pet care
Meetings are arranged once this has been successfully completed.

* Please email [email protected] * Tell us why you think that Frankie would thrive in your care. Thank you.

❤️ Precious Pete (retired working dog) has packed in many new experiences and adventures over the last couple of years! Videos in comments.

He's in a loving foster home in Oamaru, enjoying daily walks, car rides, a cosy bed and couch, being brushed and lots of treats. He's just lovely. Recently, his carer noticed that his arthritis had worsened, but with further vet care and a physio visit from Lucy, he's comfortable again.

When Pete first came to us, he needed treatment for a ruptured ear drum, a grass seed removed from the other ear, xrays, bloods, urine tests, a rotten Molar extracted and treatment for arthritis. He sure perked up after all of this!

💛 He is now slowing down but is loved and treasured. ✨️

👉 This young dog needs a foster home. He was found wandering and is unclaimed at a pound. He's down in Southland but we can arrange transport. We'd love to be able to help him have a fresh start! Another photo is in the comments. What breed do you think he is?

Raptor
Approximately 6 to 7 months old.
A friendly, very playful boy, sociable with other dogs, and good on the lead. Needs some training time with his recall.

It is not known what he is like around cats or children.

Seeking an active carer, ideally with another social dog, 6ft fencing/gates and someone home for at least half the day to settle him in and help him thrive. Lots of mental enrichment needed!

Please message us if you'd like to help! We have an application form and carry out a property visit. Thank you.

Our Story

Davey was found at Mount Misery (North Otago) tied to a fence in March, 2015, aged 9 years. Most likely a lost/abandoned pig hunting dog. He was painfully thin, had infected puncture wounds under his neck, deep scars over his body. Davey also had broken Canines with the roots exposed. He was very hand shy and desperate to be loved. I fostered, then adopted him. He could easily jump a 6ft fence, but only to get to me, so we always leave him inside if he needs to be left on his own. He is loved, well fed, healed, and enjoys sleeping by the fire. He guards the property and the car.... but when out and about, he is friendly, calm and approachable. Davey is great with children, other dogs and farm animals. He is a great mentor and very tolerant of the numerous foster dogs coming through our doors. We later found out more history about him, his real name was “Razzle” he had several pig hunting homes (some very rough handling and neglect) and had also produced several litters, we were told that he was worth a couple of grand in his prime days. About a year later, 7 dogs were uplifted from a property due to severe neglect and brought into the pound, they were emaciated, I always thought that a couple of them looked like Davey, and yes, they were some of his off spring :( Dogs usually end up in the pound through no fault of their own. They get 7 days for their owner to claim them. Many are unclaimed and by law are able to be destroyed. Times are changing and many council pounds have adoption processes and rescue organisations that they work in with to help give the dogs a second chance. Dogs that arrive at the pound can be very stressed, bored and lonely. Some arrive skinny and afraid. Others are full of bouncy, enthusiastic energy and just need mental/physical stimulation, time/training, and dedicated owners! Pound dogs are not bad dogs, they have usually been failed by their owners by not having the basics provided for them. Many were pampered as puppies (or not) but when they get older and bigger, the novelty wears off, and it’s the dogs that pay the price. Many miss out on vital socialising, basic daily enrichment and safe containment. We rescue the dogs that are able to be released into our care and take over legal ownership. All of our dogs are de-sexed, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, micro-chipped and registered. There is an adoption fee/donation for each dog to help us with these costs. We temperament test our dogs and have an adoption process to help us match them up to the home that best suits their needs - it's never first in first served. We sometimes work in with a behaviourist if required for dogs with special needs. The adoption process includes an application form, a property visit to ensure safe containment, meetings with the dog and their foster home carers. A two week trial period is given. We want our dogs and their new families to be completely happy. Some dogs have special medical requirements. We’ve had dogs arrive off farms with untreated broken legs which require amputation, we’ve had an untreated ruptured eye that needed removing, entropion eyelids requiring surgery, lameness requiring x-rays, skin conditions, ear/eye infections, heart conditions, blind dogs, deaf dogs. If a dog has a good nature, we want to do our best ensure they get the chance they deserve and we will do whatever is possible to help them. Foster homes are crucial to our rescue. We have a small team of experienced foster homes - most of which are out of town. We are always looking for new foster homes with good dog experience, safe, secure fencing and someone home during parts of the day. All food and vet care is provided (also crate/blankets if required). We also help dogs in the community. All to often young puppies and dogs of all ages are posted on the facebook pet pages with not much thought put into where they will end up. We want to encourage the de-sexing message where-ever we can! Due to back-yard breeding and over-population, there are thousands of puppies and dogs all over NZ that will not get a chance for life because there are not enough good, lifelong, responsible homes available.....yet the breeding continues at a HUGE rate. Many of our pups and dogs come from farm properties. We’ve also helped a few pigs, sheep, goats and chickens find loving, save, forever homes that are able to provide them all the quality care they deserve for their natural lifespan. ⭐️ We have updated our wish list!

Items we would love: Adaptil calming products Rescue Remedy Snuffle feeding mats Good quality dry food (Adult and Puppy - medium/large breed) Kongs, toys, treats, chews Collars Worm/flea treatments
