Dressage schoolmaster/all rounder wanted for a client. 14.2hh-15.2hh. Must be easy and quiet to ride and handle and ideally have done a bit of everything including hacking. Looking for something that can be ridden on a light contact, is established in its way of going on the flat and has already competed at dressage. A 5 star home awaits the right horse.

Teaching the young horse to be active and engaged without tension is key which is why it was so rewarding to work with this naturally talented young Lancing mare this week. Georgia Grant is doing a lovely job encouraging her to be mentally relaxed in the work and I think this is an exciting prospect for the future.

A shout out to Karen Askew and her lovely horse Gym for a fabulous result at yesterdays Selwyn Equestrian dressage day. In a short time they have gained in confidence and understanding of the work required to be supple and light and I am extremely proud that they were able to reproduce that for the judge to score 71% and 66% and a very respectable 2nd placing.

We have to remember that our horse’s brains are engineered for vigilance but when you can direct their attention and keep them busy, as Catherine did with Richard today, the end result is a lovely relaxed horse moving rhythmically and confidently. Great job! 😀

It was a beautiful day for transitions and lots of them with a focus on creating energy in the hind leg and riding through to a soft forward hand. Some super moments with both horses and thanks to Paralympic dressage Rider and DNZ judge, Jo Jackson for the photos and very useful input today. 🥰

What a wonderful day on Friday working with some totally different horse and rider combinations. The theme for the day was rider balance and how this affects your connection. A well balanced rider through transitions, turns and bends, can keep a light, steady feel and encourage a self-carrying contact. The lovely Gray, owned by Joan Wilson and ridden by Taylah showed moments of real connection and what a cracking little horse he is going to be. Samantha Stickells nailed the connection with her gorgeous horse Billy and especially on those long sides where it is easy for the horse to lose straightness and suppleness. Ros Lugg with her special sensitive boy Arlo, started to make real progress towards a better connection as Arlo began to accept more direction from his rider. I love the positive vibes from you all and remember that mastering the art of classical dressage takes endless patience.

So much fun working with this mare Ora. She has quickly worked out a feel for the connection to her rider Jaimee Cotter who rides quietly and correctly. I can’t wait to see how she progresses for the future. 🥰

Archie producing some lovely expressive work this morning in spite of the heat. Gwen Gilmore, good job ironing out those trot and canter transitions and establishing better straightness and balance throughout. Some super riding in hot hot temperatures. 🥵🐴😀

What a beautiful ride on the beach with Christchurch Icelandic Horse Treks today. These horses are amazing and sitting to their unique Tolt is like riding a magic carpet.

A fun session with Brooke Kemp and Kaha at the Nooramunga Ranch with the beautiful back drop of the mountains. Brooke soon worked out the importance of riding with your seat, especially on such a big and powerful horse and did a great job.

A good friend and riding trainer Perry Wood coined this beautiful phrase that the rider can act as a tea cosy for their semi-feral horses nurturing and giving them a feeling of safety.
This was never demonstrated more perfectly than today by Amelia McGill who helped her opinionated 5 year old mare, Malibu, find her inner work ethic. I think you have turned a corner Amelia. 👏

It’s always such a joy to work with motivated riders. This morning it was particularly rewarding to see the quiet determination pay off for Gwen Gilmore and her special horse Archie to produce a consistent and uphill canter on both reins. Good work Gwen.

Such a lovely weekend coaching at Eyreton Pony Club. It was a joy to work with some enthusiastic new riders and their lovely horses and to see a good standard of riding coming through the club. I look forward to seeing you all continue to progress and out and about in the coming year and thank you to the team at Eyreton for such a well organised camp.

Karen Stockman your dedication and willingness to challenge yourself is a huge inspiration to others. 🥰 When I met this nervous rider a year ago, she told me her dream was to do some dressage with her lovely horse Jaegar but first we needed to get her back in the saddle. Karen kept the vision that she would one day ride down the centre line and that day came today! What a great job to come 4th in the prelim and 5th in the intro at her first ever outing.

What a joy teaching some super young riders and their lovely horses over the past 10 days. Lexi Venning, watching you ride your talented Donnerubin youngster with a light and balanced seat shows you clearly both have a talent for this work. Definitely a pair to watch out for in the dressage arena for next year. 🥰
Annabel Smith, I think you are developing an exciting partnership with the new and very handsome Luca and I am looking forward to seeing your progress in 2023. I think you will do great things together; Charlize Smith, I was impressed with your quiet and sympathetic riding while Rev was doing her best to get back to being a racehorse. 😂 To finish up the session with her swinging through her back and relaxed in her work was a tremendous job; Ella Smith, I love the fabulous attitude your new horse Billy has. What a gorgeous boy and you will learn so much together. You already had him in better balance this session and the canter work was such an improvement. Good riding all round!

It was super satisfying today to see the lovely partnership that is developing between Gwen Gilmore and her talented Anamore gelding Archie.
