Rhythm is the cornerstone of dressage and once you have a regular and consistent rhythm (regularity of the footfalls), you have the key to developing balance, suppleness and engagement and ultimately collection. I am excited to see this new partnership of Adele Hefer Visser and Danny developing over the coming year and what a good job Adele did today getting this cheeky boy to take the contact forward and find his rhythm. 👏

First you want a longer neck and more open frame to give you a swinging back, then you can start to put the power in to create a more uphill frame and cadence in the trot as beautifully demonstrated by Pam Norton here on her striking boy. 🥰

There is only one way to improve the balance and suppleness in the transitions and that is to ride them and lots of them. After only two sessions together, it was super to see Sam Murphy making that final canter transition look effortless on the lovely Mac today. 👏

You can never spend too many hours on the lunge developing your seat.
Only a rider that is balanced and symmetrical can truly improve the horses straightness and having a deep seat with loose legs and independent hands will minimise your interference with your horse’s way of going.
Remember that training your body to follow your horses’ movement and allow him to move freely takes thousands of repetitions. The end result is worth the effort. 😀
P.S. Hope you can walk today Colin Samantha Stickells! 😂

Looking on behalf of a client for a nice straightforward horse, 16.2hh, capable of dressage up to level 2 or 3. Ideally aged 6+ with 3 good paces and good to hack, shoe, float etc. Super knowledgeable home awaits the right horse.
All breeds considered except full TB’s. Budget is limited but rider is prepared to put the work into a green horse or would consider something older.
PM me if you have something you think might be suitable. South Island based please. 😀

This week’s focus was all about rider position and balance.
When you take the stirrups away, the rider has to engage their core muscles which encourages a deeper seat and improves balance. I imagine Colin Samantha Stickells and Leanne Walker will be feeling their abs today but some digging deep in that sitting trot produced some lovely work from them both.
Next week, rising trot without stirrups!
Only kidding. 😜

Shout out to Leanne Walker and her lovely horse Bomber for their Champion status at the Autumn Rangiora Dressage Series. Leanne is always modest about her achievements hence the post but she has come so far in her riding and worked hard to be the best rider she can be for Bomber and has definitely learned that less is more. I have enjoyed being part of their journey so huge congrats to them both on a fabulous result.

So much improvement in such a short time! Catherine doing a great job of convincing Richard he can canter more than just one circle. 😂🥰🐴

Today was a clear reminder of the importance of electrolyte balance for you and your horse, particularly on hot days. 🥵
After a lovely schooling session earlier this morning on the adorable Cruz, I remembered far too late that electrolytes should be taken 1-2 hours before engaging in strenuous activity! Thanks to Gwen Gilmore and Hess Vertogen for the salt, sugar and fluid intake while I lay in the haybarn trying not to faint! And remember to replenish your horses electrolytes too. 🐴🥰

Best and funniest Christmas gift ever from two of my star pupils! Thanks for all the laughs, the grey hairs and hopefully some learning along the way Kat Chubb and Karen Stockman!
P.S. How did you know I have been wearing ear plugs and taking Rescue Remedy the whole time? 🤣🤣

When it comes to dressage, horses don’t come more intelligent and well balanced than the P.R.E’s. They combine that Spanish flamboyant temperament with a balanced nature and try so hard to please their riders. And I had the priviledge of riding this lovely boy of Jill Newman’s who is super smart and a dream to sit on. You know when you just want to take them home - it was definitely one of those moments! 😂🥰
