Weeding in the ngahere/bush here at Awaawaroa Bay Eco Village is regular mahi for or supreme weeding team. Banana passion fruit, honeysuckle, moth plant - just to name a few are a real threat to our forests as they smoother and strangle regenerating bush. We don't use any poisons, everything is hand weeded - which is a big job on 420 acres. So we're super grateful for the funding we receive from Auckland Council to support our efforts.

We had a wonderful day here at Awaawaroa Bay Eco Village last Saturday, celebrating 10 years of the tuna/eel sanctuary. The weather was amazing and lots of lovely people joined us to ‘ride the tail of the tuna’ with walks, raranga/weaving, kai/food, a movie and an amazing cake. Ngā mihi nui to all those organisations and individuals who supported the event – Sophie Journee from Mountains to Sea who lead a very well subscribed night walk into the repo, Jessica Reaburn from the QE2 Foundation another walk leader, Meat Free Mondays, Waiheke Resources Trust rōpū, the eco village team of helpers, the fabulous Tilde Sorenson (which is wear the story begins) with the primo sausage cooker, Kirk and the Waiheke Local Board who help fund the event.

Awaawaroa Bay Eco Village field day is tomorrow - Sunday 9th at 1pm. If you haven't booked but are planning to come along please arrive by 1pm as we're going on a guided walk and it's unlikely you'll find us once we've left. The afternoon does involve about 2km of walking so wear good walking shoes, wear a hat and bring a water bottle. Please bring cash payment as we have no eftpos facilities at the eco village. Follow the signs and remember the road is narrow and single lane in places and the speed limit 20km within the village. The Eco Village is a bird sanctuary and does not allow dogs so please don't bring them. Mā te wā - see you soon.

Kia Ora Koutou. Some of you maybe aware that we have one of the only private tuna/long finned eels sanctuaries in Aotearoa. Sadly this amazing animal has no legal protection and is still commercially fished. If you'd like to see our tuna receiving protection here is a petition you can sign. David Fumularo the petitions instigator, has been tirelessly campaigning to raise awareness of this unique and fascinating being. https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/petitions/document/PET_113510/petition-of-david-famularo-protect-the-longfin-eeltuna?fbclid=IwAR0LuJvzQG2GQcv80HawJ0RehW6N4n6jvXedxgA6-DKX9XR5t2XXaNddL0M

Kia Ora Koutou. I wanted to share this teaching resource which the children of the Awaawaroa Bay Eco Village (and their friends) helped me make. It is the second free teaching video in the series of ten movement stories that are part of the Dance Upon Our Earth teaching resource, funded by Creative New Zealand.
This one explores the lifecycle of the mysterious and magnificent tuna or long finned eels. We are lucky enough to have an eel sanctuary on the land here thanks to another one of our now 'grown up children'. These creatures are endemic to Aotearoa and are the 'water dragons' of our wetlands and water ways. As ever this teaching video is designed to demonstrate how a movement story works - not to be played to tamariki when they are dancing - as the screen will take them out of their body. If you have a water way close to you, investigate developing a relationship with it. It could well be home to these fascinating animals.
Teaching notes and album are available through my website www.imagined-worlds.net
