February Special – Hoof Balance Radiographic Examination 🏇👇

We are all familiar with the phrase “no foot, no horse”. With hoof balance having a significant effect on the development of equine lameness, we are offering radiographic assessment in conjunction with visual assessment to facilitate correct trimming and shoeing.

Our special price for hoof balance examination during the month of February will include copies of your horse’s radiographs and a vet interpretation report that can be passed on to your farrier.

On farm pricing*
$280 for front feet only
$345 for all feet

Please contact Tararua Vets Pahiatua on 06 376 8046 for more information or to book.

*Pricing excludes cost for mileage and sedation which may be required for some horses. Please ensure you have power on farm and a firm, flat surface to achieve the best results.

Current weather conditions make it time to be on the lookout for barber’s pole worm. ⚠️🪱

Having some knowledge of this parasite (Haemonchus contortus), and its debilitating effect on sheep mobs, is vital to combatting the disease.

Sheep, particularly lambs, need to be observed for classical anaemia signs like lethargy and paleness of the eyes and gums. Other signs in affected animals may be ill-thrift, rapid shallow breathing, animals lagging at the end of the mob and collapsed or dead animals.

Correct timing of drenching and weather observation are important management factors. Barber’s pole is easy to kill but given its short reproductive cycle sheep can become reinfected quickly. Please contact us for further advice on what is suitable for your situation.

Welcome to our Facial Eczema Spore Count Bulletin for 2025 - this pinned post will be updated each week, so please revisit to see what the spore count is in your area.

For the week ended 21/02/25 the facial eczema risk rating is LOW.

Please read our full bulletin here:
https://totallyvets.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Facial-Eczema-Spore-Count-Bulletin-21-February-2025.pdf

For advice on facial eczema prevention see here: https://tararuavets.nz/facial-eczema-all-you-need-to-know/

Spore counts can vary greatly between properties and even between paddocks. We encourage farmers to bring in grass samples to get a more accurate idea of the facial eczema risk on their own property. Contact us if you would like more information on bringing in your own samples for testing.

Summer is a fun time for all however, with it comes some HOT issues for our pets. See below our timely reminders about keeping your pets safe this summer. 👇

🥵 Heatstroke is life-threatening so don’t take the risk. Do not leave your pet in enclosed areas for any length of time, ESPECIALLY the car! Ensure pets always have access to shade and fresh water.

🐕 Don't forget to check the temperature of the pavements or sand before walking your dog. If it's too hot to rest your hand on the pavement or sand for more than seven seconds, then it's too hot for their paws.

💧 Unfortunately, many waterways have lingering toxic algae (cyanobacteria), which can make you and your pets very sick. Look out for signs of blue-green algae in the water before swimming. You can also refer to https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming

🌳 Keep your dog on a leash if you're walking them near karaka trees, and make sure they don't eat any fallen berries. Karaka berries are highly toxic to dogs!

Did you know the Christmas holiday period often sees a peak in emergency vet visits?!

We would hate for an emergency vet trip to ruin your Christmas! Here are some of our top tips to keep your pets safe over the festive period:

🎄Fatty Christmas meats such as ham on the bone and pork crackling can cause vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and can lead to pancreatitis.
🎄Fruit cake and Christmas pudding often contain raisins and grapes, which are toxic to your pet.
🎄Chocolate can cause seizures, vomiting, diarrhoea and can potentially kill your pet.
🎄Corn cobs can cause blockages in the intestine that may need to be surgically removed.
🎄Alcohol and caffeine are both very toxic for pets.
🎄Onions and garlic are both toxic and can cause a life-threatening anaemia if ingested.
🎄Pits and seeds of fruits contain a substance that degrades to cyanide which is toxic, and they can also cause blockages and damage to the intestine.
🎄Macadamia nuts, although unlikely to be fatal can cause very uncomfortable symptoms.
🎄While we love a traditional Kiwi Christmas in the sun, our pets can be in danger of heatstroke. Do not leave your pet in an enclosed space for any length of time, ESPECIALLY the car! Make sure you only exercise them during the cool parts of the day and ensure there is always access to shade and fresh water.

The food listed above are just a few common foods of concern, so please stick to your pet’s regular diet and include some pet-friendly treats from our clinic as a Christmas treat. https://tararuavets.nz/keeping-our-pets-safe-at-christmas/

Happy retirement to our wonderful Lorraine! 🥳💙

Lorraine has been with us since 2013 and has been an integral part of the office in Pahiatua. Her understanding of dairy farming, her care for others, and her teamwork are just a few of the wonderful qualities she brought to the clinic.

We all wish her the very best for her retirement and as much as we will miss her, are so happy she now has time to spend with her precious mokopuna and family.

All the best Lorraine!

Meet Ashlee! Dannevirke’s new Farm Team Admin 🤩

Ashlee grew up in Whanganui with a passion for animals. She commenced her studies to become a veterinarian at Massey University in 2021 but has since put her studies on hold after meeting her now fiancé and welcoming their son at the start of 2024. Dannevirke is now her home on their lifestyle block with two dogs and farm animals.

We are delighted to have Ashlee join the team! She is looking forward to meeting you all helping the animals in our community.
