Calling all Bay of Islands cat and kitten owners!

We are partnering with the SPCA for this Snip and Chip running from the 6th of March to the 30th of June.

Please follow the link in the SPCA post below to obtain your $30 voucher to get your cat or kitten desexed and microchipped. This will be available in both the Paihia and Russell clinics subject to availability.

Help spread the word and let anyone who may be interested in this offer know to book their voucher through the SPCA Desexing site below https://book.spcadesexing.nz/

SNIP ‘N’ CHIP COMES TO NORTHLAND! 🙌 We are excited to be launching a new Snip ‘n’ Chip campaign for cat owners in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Whangārei, and other areas in the Northland region.

From 6 March 2024 we are working with local participating veterinary clinics to offer this service to cat owners who are struggling with the cost of desexing and microchipping. Vouchers help those in need get their cat desexed and microchipped for $30.

PLEASE REMEMBER – a limited number of vouchers are available to help those who require financial assistance. Please, only get a voucher if you need one, and intend to use it. In the past, we have noticed some vouchers were never used, or bookings were made with vet clinics and never attended 💔 When this happens, it prevents someone else from using the voucher who might really need it.

Bookings are now OPEN, so head over to https://book.spcadesexing.nz/ to check if you’re eligible and register for your Snip ‘n’ Chip voucher. If you know someone who needs help with the online system, you can register on their behalf.

Thank you so much to our participating vet clinics, and Whangārei District Council for helping us to make this important campaign possible.

For more information, check out our dedicated desexing website spcadesexing.nz

DENTAL PROMO FEBRUARY
For the month of February, 2024, we are offering a free nurse dental check, a 10% discount on dental procedures, and a free toothpaste sample and fingerbrush. As dentals are charged based on time, these will only be done by vets that have completed the NZVA sponsored dentistry workshop so that we can do these procedures quickly to reduce costs and with minimal trauma to reduce pain and discomfort. Limited spaces so book now to avoid disappointment.

KARAKA BERRIES are highly toxic to dogs and can be found on the floor of our bush areas right now. I spotted many on a walk with my dog at Harrison's reserve this week. Please keep your dogs on a short leash or use a box muzzle when walking in these areas.

Opening in Russell Soon !
Hey Russellites,
Our Russell branch is going to be opening soon and will be located in shop 4 Traders Mall, York St. ie the salon.
We are hoping to open the doors on the 20th of December ie the Wednesday before Christmas.
Tabitha Bird, who is a much loved local in Russell, will be running the shop 8.30 am till 4 pm Monday to Friday but she won’t be starting till the 10 th of January so our hours will be reduced till then ( they will be displayed on the shop window)
Our Paihia nurses, Lesa and Kimberly will assist the vet when working in Russell, but can also offer nurse consultations by themselves ie nail clips, post- operative checks and stitch removal, basic grooming ie shaving cats with knots, booster vaccinations for puppies (not the first one nor annual ones : the vet does those). They can also administer beransa, solensia, cytopoint and synovan injections (arthritis and allergy medications). They are also a fountain of knowledge on nutrition, preventative care, ectoparasite and worming protocols and behaviour issues.
The vet present will either be myself, Natalie, or Bryan, Meg or occasionally another locum but there’s always the option of going to Te Haumi clinic if you want to see a particular vet.
We are winging this a bit so please bear with us as we get this baby off the ground.
You will be able to book appointments by phoning 0272344490 as this is the number we will use for Russell.
We will be doing some surgeries in Russell too but X rays will be only available in Te Haumi.
Thanks for your patience and ongoing loyalty. We appreciate you.

EXPANDING VETERINARY SERVICES IN THE BAY
Over the past 6 years we have had to turn away many clients and patients after we reached capacity here. In turn this created stress for the staff as we are all really passionate about helping animals. We realise that not all pets travel well, and sympathize with the logistics of having to travel to Paihia for our Russell clients.
Now that Covid is pretty much a speck in our rear view mirrors we are better able to procure additional veterinarians to help. Many of you will have met Bryan Gartrell who has locumed for us many times and is an excellent surgeon and very competent at orthopaedic surgery. Recently we have Meggie Bichard here for 4 weeks, a very experienced English vet with all-round impressive abilities (plus having been a professional mountain bike racer!).
Both of these exceptional vets are able to provide us with regular ongoing services so we are feeling confident about branching out.

We would like to open a BRANCH CLINIC IN RUSSELL and we are currently exploring potential sites in which to do this.

I would also like to move the Paihia practice out of my home in Te Haumi and into Paihia, Opua or Haruru but need a suitable commercially zoned premise. I would appreciate a call, email or PM if you know of anything.

We will be able to take on more clients so if you are interested in joining us please either phone the clinic on 094026155 or email on [email protected] or PM us.

We are also looking for additional vet nursing staff to join Lesa and Kimberly and will pay generous rates for the right person. This could be full or part-time and in Russell or Paihia.
Thanks in advance, Natalie, Lesa and Kimberly

NEW TREATMENT FOR ARTHRITIS IN DOGS
We are thrilled to finally have Beransa available for arthritic dogs.
This monthly monoclonal antibody injection has been in use overseas for the past 2 years and acclaimed for the relief it gives arthritic dogs. It is a very safe monoclonal antibody injection with
no interactions with other drugs. Many dogs can come off some or all of their pain medications after even 2 injections. We can give you a quote on price as the dose is weight dependent. Already getting rave reviews from the few dogs we have used it on.

EXCITING NEW TREATMENT FOR ARTHRITIS IN CATS; Solensia monthly injections
We are super excited to have another pain modality to use in cats as they often cannot tolerate the same pain medications as dogs and tend to suffer in silence with arthritis. This medication is cutting edge; a monoclonal antibody injection given monthly that is super safe, even in frail, elderly patients. It has no known interactions with other drugs and having used it on my 2 elderly cats I have seen big gains, even after just one injection. Cost at the moment is $81.80 a month. Worth a go?

NEW STAFF MEMBER; KIMBERLY WILLIAMS
We are thrilled to have been able to recruit the services of Kimberly Williams as a part-time vet assistant and dog handler/behaviourist.
Kimberly has over 8 years of experience in training dogs with a focus on Canine behavior and psychology. Kimberly also founded NZDR&R (New Zealand Dobermann Rescue and Rehoming) taking in Dobermanns that are misunderstood and /or becoming a danger to themselves or those around them. She then puts them through intensive training before rehoming to the most suitable home for each individual dog. This sparked a huge passion in Kimberly for working with highly strung and potentially dangerous dogs.

Kimberly completed training as a dog groomer in Melbourne, July 2019 through Dog Diversity. She is aiming to compete in breed specific grooming in 2023. Kimberly has her Certificate in Canine Behavior and Psychology, and also Certificate in Puppy Training. She is registered as a professional behaviourist with the PPN (Worldwide Pet Professionals Network).

She is a bright, bubbly addition to our practice and is a huge asset with her dog handling skills. She offers one on one dog training sessions, either here at The Village Vet or in your home, at the beach or wherever the problem behaviour is occurring upon request. This is additional to the services she provides for us, and is charged through her own business. She is also a dog groomer and works from a studio in Haruru Falls.

We are thinking of posting some training and behaviour modification tips on this site so feel free to reply with requests for topics eg. leading, crate training, socialisation , barking etc

KARAKA BERRIES KILL DOGS
If you know where these are in your neighbourhood you can comment on here to warn others. There is no antidote for these, only symptomatic treatment. Keep dogs away please.

BEWARE THE RAWHIDE CHEW
and treat with bull pizzles, pigs ears, liver treats or lamb lungs (marshmallows) sourced from NZ or Australia instead. Or reliable composite treats like veggiedents or greenies. Avoid jerky treats that are imported as they often come from China and some batches have a toxin that can cause kidney disease. These are sold in local supermarkets!
Buyer beware!

UPDATE. Puppy’s owner found…thanks everybody for caring.
Puppy hit by car on passing lanes Haruru Falls this afternoon. He is about 4 months old, has a retained testicle but is entire, is very badly hurt and we need an owner to come forward to make decisions about his care please. Was running with his mother on the Highway and she would have gone home without him. Please call Natalie 094026155 tonight please

This is happening all too often in our community. Please be aware and safeguard your pets.

Northland Police are aware of discussions in the community earlier this year where concerns were raised about dogs going missing in the area.

We have been committed to making further enquiries into these incidents and we understand a missing pet is extremely distressing for their owners. We continue to urge the public to report any suspicious behaviour to us.

Here are some steps to keep your beloved furry family members safe:

🐾 Don’t leave your dog alone in public – treat them as you would your child. Don’t leave them un-attended while shopping – in your car or tied up.
🐾 Keep an eye on your dog at all times – dog parks, beaches – and as far as possible, keep them on a lead.
🐾 Secure you yard to keep thieves out and dogs in. Ensure the yards are well-secured, lock any gates, and keep your pets in an area not easily visible from the road.
🐾 Mix up walking times – walking patterns are prime opportunities for thieves to take a dog. They can cut the lead, scoop them up and just like that, your dog will be gone.
🐾 Don’t overshare information. Try especially to not reveal too much about your animal to people you don't know, or on social media.
🐾 Ensure dogs are chipped, tattooed and registered - and make sure their ID/chip is up to date.

Police welcome information from anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour in their communities, particularly if someone you know has recently acquired a dog and isn't forthcoming with information on where they got the dog from.

You can contact us on 105, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
