Welcome to our Facial Eczema Spore Count Bulletin for 2025 - this pinned post will be updated each week, so please revisit to see what the spore count is in your area.

For the week ended 21/03/25 the facial eczema risk rating is HIGH for Feilding areas and HIGH for Awapuni areas.

Please read our full bulletin here:
https://totallyvets.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Facial-Eczema-Spore-Count-Bulletin-21-March-2025.pdf

For information on facial eczema and prevention see here: https://totallyvets.co.nz/facial-eczema-all-you-need-to.../

Spore counts can vary greatly between properties and even between paddocks. We encourage farmers to bring in grass samples to get a more accurate idea of the facial eczema risk on their own property. Contact us if you would like more information on bringing in your own samples for testing.

Summer is a fun time for all however, with it comes some HOT issues for our pets. See below our timely reminders about keeping your pets safe this summer. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿฅต Heatstroke is life-threatening so donโ€™t take the risk. Do not leave your pet in enclosed areas for any length of time, ESPECIALLY the car! Ensure pets always have access to shade and fresh water.

๐Ÿ• Don't forget to check the temperature of the pavements or sand before walking your dog. If it's too hot to rest your hand on the pavement or sand for more than seven seconds, then it's too hot for their paws.

๐Ÿ’ง Unfortunately, many waterways have lingering toxic algae (cyanobacteria), which can make you and your pets very sick. Look out for signs of blue-green algae in the water before swimming. You can also refer to https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming

๐ŸŒณ Keep your dog on a leash if you're walking them near karaka trees, and make sure they don't eat any fallen berries. Karaka berries are highly toxic to dogs!

Did you know the Christmas holiday period often sees a peak in emergency vet visits?!

We would hate for an emergency vet trip to ruin your Christmas! Here are some of our top tips to keep your pets safe over the festive period:

๐ŸŽ„Fatty Christmas meats such as ham on the bone and pork crackling can cause vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and can lead to pancreatitis.
๐ŸŽ„Fruit cake and Christmas pudding often contain raisins and grapes, which are toxic to your pet.
๐ŸŽ„Chocolate can cause seizures, vomiting, diarrhoea and can potentially kill your pet.
๐ŸŽ„Corn cobs can cause blockages in the intestine that may need to be surgically removed.
๐ŸŽ„Alcohol and caffeine are both very toxic for pets.
๐ŸŽ„Onions and garlic are both toxic and can cause a life-threatening anaemia if ingested.
๐ŸŽ„Pits and seeds of fruits contain a substance that degrades to cyanide which is toxic, and they can also cause blockages and damage to the intestine.
๐ŸŽ„Macadamia nuts, although unlikely to be fatal can cause very uncomfortable symptoms.
๐ŸŽ„While we love a traditional Kiwi Christmas in the sun, our pets can be in danger of heatstroke. Do not leave your pet in an enclosed space for any length of time, ESPECIALLY the car! Make sure you only exercise them during the cool parts of the day and ensure there is always access to shade and fresh water.

The food listed above are just a few common foods of concern, so please stick to your petโ€™s regular diet and include some pet-friendly treats from our clinic as a Christmas treat. https://totallyvets.co.nz/keeping-our-pets-safe-at-christmas/

Whether they're going into the boarding kennels or coming along on the family holiday, ensure they are protected from the nasties. With many dogs socialising over the summer, we do tend to see disease spikes.

Book in early to avoid the Christmas rush!

Totally Vets Feilding are seeking some very special pets to join our Hero Pets blood donor program. ๐Ÿฉธโค๏ธ

We are seeking some very special pets to join our Hero Pets blood donor program. ๐Ÿฉธโค๏ธ

Just like the importance of human blood donations, pet blood donations can often mean the difference between life and death when our pets are threatened by illness, disease, trauma, surgery, or poisoning incidents.

Totally Vets afterhours emergency service and specialist services means we have an increased requirement for blood. Unfortunately, blood has a short lifespan, so we are reliant on regular donations from generous fur donors to help us utilise this life-saving treatment when an emergency strikes.

As a thankyou in return for their life-saving donation, our blood donor heroes receive:
โญ A donor thankyou pack
โญ Free annual health check and vaccination
โญ Free blood typing and disease screening
โญ Entry into the Totally Vets โ€œHero Petโ€ hall of fame

The procedure for blood donation is relatively non-invasive but there are a few requirements for your pet to be eligible to donate. For more information and to check your pets eligibility see here: https://ow.ly/8QHv50QLbxx

If you own or know of a dog or cat that satisfies the criteria, we would love to hear from you!
