We are seeking some very special pets to join our Hero Pets blood donor program. 🩸❤️

Just like the importance of human blood donations, pet blood donations can often mean the difference between life and death when our pets are threatened by illness, disease, trauma, surgery, or poisoning incidents.

Totally Vets afterhours emergency service and specialist services means we have an increased requirement for blood. Unfortunately, blood has a short lifespan, so we are reliant on regular donations from generous fur donors to help us utilise this life-saving treatment when an emergency strikes.

As a thankyou in return for their life-saving donation, our blood donor heroes receive:

⭐ Free annual health check and vaccination
⭐ Free blood typing and disease screening
⭐ Entry into the Totally Vets “Hero Pet” hall of fame

PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK ⚠️😷

If you haven't heard already the Manawatu is currently experiencing an outbreak of the highly contagious parvovirus disease. We are urging you to make sure your dogs vaccinations are up to date so they are protected from this deadly disease.

Parvovirus can survive in the environment for extremely long periods of time and can be spread from one dog to the other through direct and indirect contact.

Summer safetly - protect their paws 🐾☀️

Don't forget to check the tempertaure of the pavements or sand before heading out for a walk with your dog. If it's too hot to rest your hand on the pavement or sand for more than seven seconds, then it's too hot for their paws to handle a walk on it!

We recommend walking them first thing in the morning or waiting until the evening when it's a bit cooler.

Welcome to our Facial Eczema Spore Count Bulletin for 2024 - this pinned post will be updated each week, so please revisit to see what the spore count is in your area.

For the week ended 26 April 2024, the highest spore count in the Feilding area was 0 and the highest spore count in the Awapuni area was 30,000.

The Facial Eczema Risk rating is LOW for Feilding areas and LOW for Awapuni areas.

We’re back with some more summer safety tips! ☀️🌊

During the warm weather, the river becomes a popular place for people and their dogs to cool down.

Unfortunately, in the Manawatu, many waterways have lingering toxic algae (cyanobacteria), which can make you and your pets very sick. It is important to actively consider if your favourite swimming spot is a safe place to be by looking for signs of the blue-green algae in the water, and you can also refer to www.lawa.org.nz/swim before setting out.

We have certainly seen some warm days recently, which calls for some summer safety reminders 🥵☀️

Did you know that unlike us, dogs and cats do not sweat? They release heat through their tongues and, to a lesser extent, their foot pads and nose. As you can imagine, this is much less effective than sweating – so even if your comfortable, your pet may be too hot.

This means that when you leave your pet in an enclosed space such as a car, even if the vehicle is in the shade and even if the outside temperature is cool, the temperature and humidity build up very quickly once panting begins.

Heat stroke can be life-threatening, so don't take the risk.

🔹 Do not leave your pet in enclosed areas for any length of time, especially the car!
🔹 Big dogs (St Bernard), dogs with flat faces (Boxer, Pug), and overweight, older, dehydrated or anxious pets are more likely to develop heat stroke, so be extra cautious.
🔹If you’re traveling in the car with your dog, make sure they have plenty of ventilation and allow for frequent water stops throughout the drive
