While It’s tempting to sneak a little treat to your pet under the dinner table, be careful the food is pet safe this Christmas.🎄🐾

Make sure to keep these foods out of reach and educate family members on the dangers of feeding human foods.

It's not just food that can pose a risk! Watch out for non-edible hazards your pet may try nibble like Christmas baubles, tinsel, or fishhooks at the beach.

If your pet eats any of these foods, or something you’re not sure is safe, give your vet a call. Our emergency team are working over the break and are here to help!

Holiday Walks with Your Dog: Keeping It Fun and Safe!☀️🐶

The holidays are here, it’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy a walk with your dog. But with all the excitement, it’s important to keep your furry friend under control to avoid any mishaps. Here’s how to keep those walks and playtime stress-free for you, your dog, and everyone else you encounter:

• Leash Control: Keep your dog on a leash in areas where it’s required. If you want to let them off-leash, make sure they have a solid recall and are under your voice control.

• Slow Introductions Are Key: When meeting new dogs, take it slow. Start with calm and controlled introductions.

• Respect Other People’s Space: Before introducing your dog to another person or dog, always check in first. Not everyone is comfortable with a dog rushing up to them (especially small kids, seniors, or cyclists)

• Read the Signs: Watch for early signs of stress or anxiety, like lip licking, yawning, a lowered tail, or a hunched body. If you spot these, it's time to give them some space

A little socialization, awareness, and training go a long way in making walks enjoyable for both you and your dog. So, let’s keep those holiday strolls stress-free, fun, and safe for everyone! Enjoy the season and happy walking! 🐾

Protect your dogs paws from burns.🐾🔥

Hot weather means hot surfaces, and your dog’s paws are at risk! Surfaces like pavement, sand, and metal can burn their sensitive paw pads.

Protect against burns by placing the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds, if it’s too hot for you it’s too hot for your dog. Look for shaded spots, grassy areas, or even cool dirt paths for your walks. Avoid midday strolls, when the sun is blazing, and try to aim for early mornings or evenings.

Look out for red, swollen, or blistered paw pads. You may also notice limping, excessive limping, or chewing. Give your vet a call for advice if you notice these signs. The summer sun might be hot, but with a little care, your dog can still enjoy their walks without the worry of burnt paws.

As summer rolls in, it's so tempting to bring your furry friend along for errands, but please remember never leave animals in a parked car.

Even with the windows cracked or parked in the shade, temperatures inside a car can skyrocket in no time. Cats and dogs aren't as good at cooling themselves down as we are, so are more affected by the heat. Heatstroke can hit in as little as 15 minutes and can be fatal.

Signs of heatstroke to watch for:
☀️ Heavy panting
☀️ Drooling
☀️ Restlessness
☀️ Vomiting or diarrhoea
☀️ Confusion
☀️ Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait! Call your vet immediately. Our emergency team are here 24/7 to help, though we really hope you won’t need us!

If you’re in doubt, it’s better to leave them at home. Remember to give access to plenty of fresh water and shade regardless of where your pets are this summer. Lets help our furry friends enjoy the season as much as we do. 🌞🐾

The staff of the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Companion Animal referral service would like to welcome NZ veterinarians and especially our supporting practices to attend the 2024 Patron’s Day.
For our patrons (veterinarians who have referred a case in 2024) the day is free and fully catered to say thank you for supporting the mission of the veterinary teaching hospital to train great undergraduates and interns/residents.

This is a full day of CPD, presented by clinicians and experts across many disciplines in the Companion Animal Hospital. We will have a great program of speakers and, as always, this will be a great networking opportunity. This year the topics will include, anaesthesia, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, radiology and surgery.

So put the date in your diaries now! The first Friday in December (the 6th) in Palmerston North. Patron’s Day has become a regular event on the CPD calendar for veterinarians from all over the country and is not limited to our patrons. There is a small charge for attendees who do not use the VTH as a referral provider but would still like to attend and you are most welcome!

Please email me, Pauline, on [email protected] with your registration details and dietary preferences as the day will be fully catered.

We look forward to hosting you again this year!

🎆Guy Fawkes🎆

We all know fireworks can be a real scare-fest for our pets! But don’t worry—we’ve got some pawsome tips to help your furry companions feel safe and sound:

🐾 Create a cozy den: Set up a snuggly hideaway with a crate, blankets, or boxes where your pet can curl up and feel secure.

🐾 Stay inside: Keep those windows and curtains closed. This way, the loud booms and bright flashes stay outside where they belong.

🐾 Crank up the radio or TV: Familiar sounds can drown out the noise and make your pet feel right at home.

🐾 Calming products: Try calming pheromone products like Feliway for our feline friends and Adaptil for the pups.

🐾 Chat with your vet: If your pet is really on edge, don’t hesitate to talk to your vet about possible medications to help them chill out.

Got questions or need more help? Call us at 06 350 5329 to chat with our friendly reception staff, or swing by to check out our funky display! Let’s keep those tails wagging and purrs coming! 😁❤️

🚨 Easter reminder for dog owners 🚨 Everyone knows chocolate 🍫 is toxic but did you know about RAISINS? 🍇 Even one grape or raisin could cause kidney failure in your beloved pooch 😨 So this weekend keep hot cross buns and easter eggs away from your pups.

Poor Poppy found some hot cross buns in the compost yesterday but thankfully she was brought to Massey Vets so we could make her vomit before any damage was done 🤮 If you think your dog has eaten something they weren’t supposed to, call us for advice, we are open 24/7 📞

Have a safe and happy Easter 🐣 🐶
