Alright folks, FLYSTRIKE is out and about already and it is time to act.
This is a timely reminder that we are full steam ahead, into a long hot summer!
Please start keeping a close eye on your animals, and get your flystrike prevention on ASAP. Our shelves are stocked up with CYREX, ready for the onslaught. For less than 20 sheep, Cyrex is the most cost-effective product for prevention. Just mix with water and pour over the body (a watering can works wells) to protect from flies and maggots for 12 weeks!
Don’t’ forget to shear as soon as possible and drench to prevent daggy backsides.
Please give us a call if you have a fly struck animal. The tissue damage causes substantial pain, distress and infection and a vet is required to treat and dress the wound, provide pain relief, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

With the weather turning cooler & the days becoming shorter, we will hopefully start to see the incidence of many summertime diseases trending downward. If you have backyard chickens, you may notice egg numbers dropping off as they begin moulting (see article below).

Safe stockyards are absolutely crucial for the safety of you, your animals and our vets and vet techs.

Every lifestyle block with stock should have stockyards or pens. Stockyards are used to get animals on and off transport, to carry out any routine procedures requiring animal handling such as drenching, and also to allow restraint of an animal if a vet visit is required.

Prevention is better than cure

Franklin Vets was first established in the Franklin area in 1946. Since that time we have seen alot of changes to the district as Auckland sprawls ever closer. Large farms have been cut up into lifestyle blocks, most of which have a few grazing animals which are very much pets and part of the family.

We know how important these animals are to our lifestyle block farmers and we are committed to working with you to establish a programme of preventative care for them. There is nothing more distressing for you that having to make an emergency call to our vets for something that could easily have been prevented.

Talk to us today if you would like to learn more about the healthcare packages that we offer for sheep, goats and alpacas. Phone: 09 298 8575.
