18/05/2024

A very common injury in dogs is rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. Ligaments are fibrous attachments between two bones, in this case the femur & tibia. The cranial one (meaning "nearest the head") in particular, is prone to rupture when under sudden violent strain such as jumping over a fence. Athletic dogs can rupture a cruciate ligament suddenly at any time.

For best results, early surgery is the best option. The knee joint is rendered unstable by the injury & continuing to walk/run around can further damage the menisci which can result in severe ongoing lameness. With time an untreated leg can stabilize with fibrosis (scarring) in the surrounding tissues but there may be a lot of arthritic change from damage during the unstable period and even worse, meniscal damage!

Jumping is all fun for dogs and even humans, but we should always be careful!

There is a disease that we see quite often. Most pet owners are confused by the diagnosis because they have never heard of it.
Imagine that suddenly your pet cannot get up or walk and the eyes are "twitching". That is called vestibular disease and is often treatable.
In order to maintain balance, coordination, and orientation, we must rely on our vestibular system. The vestibular apparatus is located within the inner ear & the brain. If there is an abnormality within this apparatus, dizziness, imbalance and in-coordination result.
This can occur due to inner ear infections or tumors of the inner ear or brain.

Typical signs could be sudden loss of balance, head tilt, difficulty walking, rolling or falling to one side, anxiety and panting.

Don't hesitate to make an appointment if you see any of these signs on your pet!

As responsible pet owners, we need to do everything in our power to keep our dogs safe and happy. But things happen, and when they do it is also our responsibility to be prepared so that we can provide our pets with the care they need. An option to do this is to get a pet health insurance policy while your pet is still healthy. There are several companies available now in NZ - you can get brochures from the Vets!

Even though summer is over now, it is always a good time to remember the damaging effects of UV rays to our furry friends! Especially on animals that have been bred with white or non pigmented extremities.

These are some instructions you can follow to protect your pet from sunburn and avoid any possibility of cancer:
-Keep your animals indoors during the worst part of the day! (10a.m. - 3 p.m.)
-Apply a U.V. blocker - currently the best available for pets is filtabac.
It is quite tenacious so one application around 10 a.m. usually lasts over the critical period.

Let's remember these tips for next summer and keep the season happy for all of us๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพโ˜€๏ธ

A problem I commonly see in cats is chronic vomiting. There are many possible causes for this.

Unlike us, cats have voluntary control over their esophagus, so if they are uncomfortable after eating something indigestible they can fairly easily just bring it up! They often help this process by eating a quantity of grass first!

A common cause is furballs. Every time your cat grooms itself those raspy spikes on its tongue force it to swallow a heap of fur. Itโ€™s a good idea to brush cats each day to avoid any possible problems.

Another cause could be drinking water right after a big biscuit meal. These cats might need to be fed smaller meals!

And last but not least, felines can also get inflammatory bowel disorder in which the cat's immune system reacts to an antigen in the food with a hypersensitivity reaction. This results in an inflamed stomach and manifests as vomiting.

If you are worried about your cat's chronic vomiting, get your furry friend checked at the clinic!

A problem we often deal with in animals involves inadequate tear production commonly referred to as dry eye. It comes on gradually often as a sequel to chronic infections or in some dogs due to autoimmunity (where their own antibodies attack their own tissues). The condition is very painful due to a lack of lubrication of the eyeball. It is easily diagnosed by measuring the tear production with a paper strip.

Treatment used to be a real issue. Success rates were poor but this all changed with the introduction of cyclosporin, an anti-rejection drug used in organ transplants that made the patient's eyes water as a side effect. It's especially useful in pets who often have autoantibodies but in all cases of dry eye, is very effective at stimulating tear production. There is now also an ocular lubricant which is effective when applied 2-4 times daily.

Dry eye is not always curable, but it is usually manageable. If your pet is getting recurrent eye infections, get his tear production measured! It may save a lot of pain & discomfort.

Some people think that desexing male cats is an unnatural and unnecessary mutilation. But it brings a lot of benefits. While it may seem like a routine surgery, its impact is big, both for cats and the community around!
Especially during breeding season, cats fight with other males and try to mate with the females. They are very good carnivores, able to capture and kill much larger prey. Their sharp canines are covered in anaerobic bacteria which can form a cat bite abscess during a fight. Some cats wall off the abscess by fibrosis and a relatively healthy-looking cat can produce an abscess as big as a tennis ball. Others suffer septicemia (blood poisoning by bacterial toxins) which also occurs after an abscess bursts. Without treatment, the infection can spread and can even prove fatal.

Entire male cats are much more aggressive and have a much greater home range. They also tend to smell pungent due to their very strong urine which they use to mark their territory vigorously. Desexing also solves the problem of surplus kittens.

It is common in entire male cats to see extensive wounds and scars. The constant stream of bacteria in their bloodstream after a fight is linked with other health problems such as renal failure at an earlier age. Castration has other health benefits in preventing testicular cancer and prostate problems.

Make your appointment to castrate your cat at the clinic!

Dogs and cats can have ear problems just like us. There is a condition called "Otitis externa" - a common occurrence that occurs due to a variety of causes.

To treat it properly, it is important to first determine the cause. If there is a foreign body (e.g. a grass seed) down in the ear canal it has to be removed. Using old ear drops may allow time for a grass seed to pe*****te further and may lead to hearing loss & balance disorders.
In this case, ear drops would be useless. It is necessary to do a lateral ear resection.

Hearing loss and pain can result if the ears are not checked out properly so always get your vet to look down at your dog's ears before using ear drops! Make your appointment so we can check your furry friend's ears!

Oil can be a significant danger to pets when they come into contact with it. Whether it's motor oil, cooking oil, or any other type, the consequences can be severe.
Here's some tips you can follow if your pet has been in contact with oil:
-Wear adequate protection (rubber kitchen gloves, disposable apron)
-Wash in a well-ventilated area
-Initially apply a light oil such as canola cooking oil, and massage well to loosen the oil.
-Wash with dish-washing liquid or any pet shampoo in warm water. Change the water & repeat this procedure until the oil is gone.
-Use pet shampoos if you have one, Baby shampoo is OK to use also.
- Finally, rinse off with warm water & then dry.

If you suspect your pet has ingested oil seek veterinary advice ASAP.
