Yes, its AFB, we've always had to burn the hives, sadly. Just that the media has discovered that now. It's really virulence and impossible to kill with heat or products, without also killing Bees, we're not allowed to use antibiotics to treat it in NZ. We have to burn the whole colony or multiples on a site if it's widespread. It's very sad, but a practical and effective , if not wasteful solution.

A few photos I took of pollen, packed in the cells of a frame. Oh.. and a few bees 😅Sometimes there is purple pollen 😍

The Government’s ministerial inquiry into forestry slash must look into the amount of land being bought up by international buyers for carbon farming, Groundswell NZ says.

Fantastic care by our lovely Urban Bees site owners! Leaving the grass long in front of a hive and not spraying it helps the bees, by protecting it from predators, wind and rain. Spraying outside the hives looks tidier, but allows for the spray to be walked inside on thousands of tiny bee feet, contaminating the hive and potentially poisoning it. Love your bees 🥰

If the forecasts and weather meddlers are for real - & sometimes they're more hype and stirring up of fear than reality - North Island beekeepers, farmers, crop & stock owners & everyone else, make sure you're safe before the cyclone hits.
Ensure any rain gutters, creeks and storm water drains are cleared out. Reduce tall beehives & strap them, or put a heavy rock on them. Batten down loose items & building materials which could fly around in high winds & cause more damage. If you're at home, ensure you are prepped with fresh water, food, electrical sources, batteries, cooking & med supplies And loo rolls 😁 and your pets are safely contained & catered for.
This could be big, but let's pray it isn't. Keep an eye on, or gather in people living alone, or who are vulnerable & check they too have supplies and safety. Afterwards, check in with people to keep everyone in the loop.
