AMAZING REUNION STORY
We had Buddie come in to us yesterday as a stray who had been hanging around Mervyn Kemp Drive. After scanning his microchip we called his owners who were both excited and confused at the same time! Buddie lives in the Hawkes Bay and the owners have been frantically looking for him for a month! If only Buddie could talk and let us know what adventures he has been on! His human brother and sister Jayden and Sariyah were excited to meet him after doing a day trip down to pick him up! Safe travels home Buddie, we hope you stay put when you get home!
This shows how amazing microchips are! When was the last time you checked your details were up to date? Please call us on 0800RAPPAW if we can help you in any way to find out!
INTRODUCING MARSHMALLOW
Today Dr Ian had the VERY important job of checking over our client service team member Toni's new furbaby Marshmallow. She got the big green tick of approval, and is settling in well to her new home after arriving on Friday! Welcome to the Rappaw family Marshmallow!
More Photos from the Open Day last weekend. We estimate that we had over 300+ people come through the doors, within 2 hours, last weekend, which well exceeded our expectations. We thank you all for coming and hope you enjoyed the experience.
Thank you to our amazing face painter from Rainbow Circus, she did an amazing job, and she had queues of kids lining up.
Thank You to our photographer Ivor, as you can see he took amazing photos.
We just want to thank everyone who came in to the new Rappaw Central Veterinary Hospital today. We were totally blown away and humbled by the lovely comments and feedback we received. We were so happy to see everyone and show you around. Apologies to anyone who missed out on some of the giveaways, but we totally underestimated how many would actually come.
The prize draws will be done on Monday.

****** UPDATE ON THE WEE KITTEN FOUND SUNDAY ******
Meet Smokey the kitten. He is 4months of age, and very lucky to be alive.
He actually lives in Cannons Creek, but was found on Kenepuru Drive.
In winter lots of kittens and smaller cats tend to get up in the engine bay of the car, where it is nice and warm. We believe this is what little Mr Smokey has done, and the family car had been on Kenepuru Drive earlier that morning. We believe he has then run along Kenepuru Drive, where he has possibly been hit by a car, then a member of the public has brought him into us.
He is on some good pain relief and will be having surgery today to help fix the nasty break in his leg.
His family have been in spending a bit of time with him, and showering him in love
Possible owners found, please note miscommunication, was not found in bag, just brought on.
URGENT CARE REQUIRED
Please share, anyone missing a little black kitten? We have had a little black kitten with bad injuries brought into us. Very friendly, has a collar. Please contact Rappaw Central 04 2338059 if you think it may be yours.

How Cute are these two!
Dakota and Memphis are loving the new 'Doggy TV' in the dog waiting area in the new Central Clinic.
They were absolutely glued to watching the dogs.
Parvo is spreading everywhere lately, and unfortunately it's killing puppies. It can be avoided with vaccine. If you are unsure of your dogs vaccine status, please call one of our clinics.

PARVO IS ON A KILLING SPREE!!!
We've had 16 cases of parvo refereed to us from vets around the Hutt Valley over the past week. Two of the pups passed away - we got them too late๐ญ. Two are doing well and are in recovery. One is still receiving our care and one parvo pup that was referred to us, didn't actually have parvo. He is doing well now also.
How it works: If you have a pup that you suspect has parvo. Take it to your vet and ask for a snap test. If result is positive, and you or your vet find it difficult to provide ongoing treatment. Ask your vet to refer you to HUHA. There is a form that they fill in agreeing that HUHA are only providing compassionate parvo treatment and support and that you will remain their client.
We will organise a time for you to visit HUHA Haywards, the same time every day for 3-7days depending on severity. Our Nurses will provide supportive treatments, fluids for hydration, antibiotics and drugs for nausea, pain and other complications and symptoms. Our HUHA vet is on hand if needed. Parvo is a killer so there is no guarantee that the treatment will work. Tough we have had great success over the years, there have also been incredibly sad losses. The sooner we see your pup, the better the chances! You will need to keep your pup indoors and warm during treatment and recovery. We will give you easy hygiene protocols to follow to help stop the virus from spreading around your community.
***
Here is a brain dump from our team. to help you understand a bit more about what you can do to help your pup and stop the spread in your community.....
IMPORTANT PARVO TIPS!!
It's Parvo season again. Please make sure your dog's and puppies are vaccinated!
We did a quick brain dump for you...we hope it's helpful xx
*Parvo can be walked into your home on someone's shoe, on the tyre of a bike or pram, or by a dog that has come in contact with a poo contaminated by the virus.
*Your dog can contract it from sniffing anything contaminated by a parvo dog poo.
*It may be already present at your home. Laying dormant from a previous tenants pet.
Parvovius can lay dormant in soil or 1-9years!!!
*A dog/pup will show symptoms 5-7days after coming in contact with the virus.
*TIP: 1 part bleach to 30 parts water is a cost effective way to kill parvo in the environment.
*If your dog or pup is lethargic, off colour, is nauseous or has unexplained diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea - please seek veterinary help immediately.
*Although Parvo is a virus and has to run its course, but a dog/pup left unsupported may die depending of the severity of the strain. So supportive care can save his life. In the most basic terms, due to aggressive vomiting and hemorrhagic diarrhoea your dog is at risk of severe dehydration and hypoglycemia leading to hypothermia and death.
*Vets can offer lifesaving pain relief, anti nausea medication, antibiotics, vitamins and electrolytes and fluid therapy.
*TIP: rubbing glucose syrup (in the baking section of the supermarket) into your dogs gums can help with weakness and fading due to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. If you don't have glucose Syrup try honey or sugar dissolved in a little water.
*TIP: Worm your Dog/pup. A pup with parvo who also carries a worm burden is at serious risk. The worm burden can overwhelm a sick pup and compromise chance of recovery.
*When you go to your vet do not get out of your car. They will glove and gown up and come out to you.
*There is a snap test (like the covid one, but re**al) that vets can use to identify a positive for parvo.
*No treatment is not an option. Dying from parvo is painful. Not treating would be cruel.
*Treatment options are
Inpatient, outpatient or euthanasia.
*If you choose to be treated as an outpatient for parvo.
Do not leave your dog tied or kenneled outside it could become hypothermic through the night.
*The best chance of your pet surviving, is to be inside, warm and hydrated. The vets will give you medications and supportive items to help with this. In severe cases you may need to visit the vet daily for injections.
*Your dog will feel too sick to eat. So offering them bland and easily digestible food like boiled chicken, broth or a vet prescription diet is best.
*TIP: Whilst it is important to keep your dog snugly and warm. Dogs with parvo have a sensitivity to direct heat. A heat pad that is too hot will burn them. So make sure hotties and heat pads are wrapped in a towel or blankets and are not placed directly against the dogs skin.
*Your job is to establish good quarantine/hygiene protocols in your home.
*Personal hygiene is so important. Wash your clothes and your hands and spray your shoes after each contact with the parvo patient.
*TIP: Spray the bottoms of your shoes with 1/30 bleach every time you leave home so you don't walk parvo through your community.
*Double bag any vomit, poo or soiled items so the virus dosent leach out during disposal. Wash clothes in Clorox or another effective disinfectant...rural stores sell Virkon.
*Do not take your dog off the property (aside car trips to the vets. And carry your dog to and from the car) pick up all poo and vomit, spray with your chosen disinfectant. And do not let your dog socialise with other dogs.
*vaccinated dogs can still get parvo. Though it is usually a milder case, it is absolutely possible.
*It will be just a matter of days before your dog dies or starts to slowly improve.
*Recovery from Parvo can take 2-7days depending on the animal, the severity and the strain.
*If you dog starts to eat and keep food down. It is a really promising sign๐ค
*If your dog/pup dies๐ญ
It's important to send the body (double bagged, sorry to be insensitive!) to be cremated (your vet can help with this), or if you choose to bury him at home, make sure it is a deep burial.
*If your dog survives. He/she is still shedding the virus and his poo (and possibly the bottom of your shoes) with be contagious for another 2 weeks. So keep going with your quarantine and hygiene until it is safe. The vets can do another snap test to be sure its negative.
If you have anymore questions contact your vet.

EASTER HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF
CHOCOLATE TOXICITY
Easter is all about chocolate, but did you know itโs not safe for our furry friends? Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, substances toxic to animals like dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and cocoa powders, being richer in these compounds, are particularly hazardous. Remember, the darker the chocolate, the more danger it packs. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning vary from vomiting and diarrhoea to more severe signs like seizures and heart arrhythmias. The severity depends on the chocolate type and the amount ingested.
To protect your pets this Easter:
ยท Store chocolate safely away from pets
ยท Inform everyone in the household including your children of the risks
ยท Offer pet-safe treats instead of chocolate
If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate, immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Keeping Easter chocolates out of petsโ reach ensures a safe holiday for all family members.
HOT CROSS BUNS
The risk of toxicity from hot cross buns, comes from the consumption of sultanas and raisins.
Often found in traditional hot cross buns, ingestion of grapes and their dehydrated versions can cause irreversible kidney failure in cats and dogs.
The exact mechanism of this is unknown, so it is impossible to calculate a universal toxic dose. For this reason, if your pet consumes any grapes, sultanas, or raisins it is recommended to see a veterinarian immediately. Your veterinarian may induce vomiting to decrease the toxic effects, but hospitalisation, intravenous fluids and supportive care may be required to help protect your pet's kidneys.

MEET ALBERT AKA OLD MAN What a superstar Albert was tonight with his first hydrotherapy session with Cate. Albert has started hydrotherapy to build muscle back up in his back end, and to help his stiff joints after medical conditions have caused massive muscle wastage. We can't wait to see how his walking improves in the coming weeks (they take a few sessions to get used to the treadmill). Thank you so much to Albert's family for sharing this video and pictures with us tonight!
Here is little wriggly Winston for his teeth cleaning demonstration. We will have a cat model next week!
**COMMENT AND SHARE TO WIN** TEETH CLEANING DEMONSTRATION With our last competition going off, and our dental focus in full swing for March we thought we would keep the prizes rolling! This is one of our lovely qualified vet nurses Chantel demonstrating how to clean a dogs teeth. Thinking "my dog wont sit still like that!!!!" we have another video we will share next week with a little anxious wriggly dog so stay tuned! Want to win a dental care prize pack valued at $100? Comment if you have a CAT OR DOG, and share this post! Winner will be announced next Sunday!

**TOY RABBIT LOST TO THE WOLF PACK ๐** This is what happens when you drop your squeaky photo prop on the floor in a room full of 6 week old Husky puppies!!! They were a delite to have in today, and how precious is the wee poppet asleep through the chaos ๐๐
***PUPPY MADNESS!!!!**** I had the pleasure of sitting in on our Puppy Preschool class tonight after babysitting one of the attendees for the evening. What a great bunch of puppies and owners! Here is a wee video of 14yr old Bryony teaching Axel how to "lay down", she did a fantastic job! Will post some more pictures in the next few days!
******Spring Singing****** This is Charlie the Westie, and he is addicted to opera singing! Whenever he hears his song .....
UPDATE: Mr White has found a home!!!!! MR WHITE HAS BEEN SERVED AN EVICTION NOTICE !! We have until Wednesday to try and find Mr White a home through Rappaw :-) He is best suited as the only family pet, and with older children. Please see our previous post with all the details!! He is available for meet and greets at our Paremata Clinic so give them a call on 2338059!! He is such a smooch just wanting a forever lap to call his own!
******BANANA BOX BABIES****** Yesterday one of our clients came in with a banana box full of kittens!!! Her company gets banana boxes from across the road in shrink wrap pallets. Much to their surprise when they were unpacking the boxes one of them contained this foursome! We think they are approx 5 weeks old and after some food, water, vet checks and meds they are fighting fit. It is horrible to think what could have happened if they weren't found when they were, but they are definitely in the right hands now!! We have named them George, Emma, Miley, and Leia :-).
HELP NAME ME!!!! This little guy was found all by himself so was brought in to us for a check over!. We are going to nurse him over the weekend but can't decide on a name! We don't know if they are a he or a she so open to all suggestions!!
We are very fortunate to celebrate Gumbos 4th Birthday with him as he stays in our Cattery. He is such a charmer when he comes in, and we thought we would give him extra special treatment for his special day!! Here his is enjoying his brush, before his gourmet meal!!
We are lucky enough to have this little family perched in a nest outside our Paremata clinic!! This is an amazing video one of our nurses took and we had to share it!!
****LOOKING FOR MY FURREVER FAMILY**** Hi everyone! Even though I am liking it here at the vet, I would love to find a family of my own. They advertised me further down the page but no one has asked about me yet. I am at the Tawa clinic and they have taken a video of me hoping I might catch someone's eye. Please contact Tawa if you think your home would suit me (being an independent girl and all) Thanks Tula :-)
