One of the greatest things about dogs is how they make us get out for walks even when we (think we) don’t feel like it 😍

Above all, do not lose your desire to walk.
Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness.
I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it ..

This is the absolutely stunning Pip 😍😍 Pip walks with Helen most weeks and they go on all kinds of adventures in the neighbourhood. They check out all the local parks. Pip goes for a 30 minute walk with Helen and her owner just books casual walks for Pip as she needs them.

Interesting read. It’s not surprising that “let them
Sniff” Is number one on the list. We already take full advantage of this in our walking service. We know that one of the best ways to tire a dog out is to let them use their nose on walks as much as possible.

“Sniffaris” are an everyday thing for us, and the dogs LOVE it 🐶❤️

OPERATION “Cruz”
Richmond

This is the story of how Cruz went MIssing & how we got him back.

So many people were involved with helping us find Cruz, we are truly thankful & grateful to each one of you. Many have asked about Cruz and how & where we found him, so I thought I would share his story as it may help someone some day if you were ever in a similar situation. I have learnt a lot about doggy behavior & what Dogs do when they are lost.

Cruz was with some friends of ours in Richmond and was off lead when he took off around 11am on Tuesday, and they were unable to call him back. As soon as we knew he was missing I put up a post on all my pages plus all the Community groups in the area.
He ran from upper Richmond within an hour to Lower Queen Street & was sighted multiple times & many people saw him in the middle of the road at the busiest lights in Richmond with cars slowing down to avoid him. It makes me cringe when I think of how many roads he crossed.

We had messages from people that had seen him in lower Richmond, McShanes Road, Eyebright, at the back of the A&P show grounds, headingly lane, Jubilee park & Berryfields & Bay Nurseries. Most people said he was running like the wind and wouldn't stop for anyone. People tried to call him but he took no notice.

So many families joined in the search, walking, driving, biking to try and find him. I had calls at 9.30pm at night from lovely folk that were out there searching with spotlights.
Tuesday 5pm was the last time he was spotted and then it all went quiet.

That night I managed to get hold of Don known for his Search & Dog Tracking skills. He told me that when a dog gets lost they go into a state of survival, they are in complete flight mode where they become scared of everyone, like we are the enemy, but there are certain things you can do to get them back. He said they don't trust anyone, even their owners and they just bolt & run from everyone.

So we needed to get everyone to stop approaching/chasing him as it would just make him run further away but if sighted to contact me immediately. He also said that the first day because they have been chased they are in such a panicked state and then they usually disappear & hide for 24-48 hours which is not what you want to hear as you just really want to get them back. Sure enough Cruz disappeared with no sightings for a whole day on the Wednesday.

Don was pretty certain that the next day he would appear & be in a calmer state and he would make better decisions and there would be a lot higher chance of getting Cruz back.
We began following Dons advice and the first thing was creating a time line.

This was the crucial, Don explained it would help to get him back.
-If someone saw him make sure no one approaches him but call or text me.
once I got there and not to call or chase the him .. but to sit.
They don't recognize you by sight or sound ( so don't call them or yell). You must sit still and let them come to you & dont reach out or anything until they recognize you and come in for a cuddle.

On Thursday around 1pm my phone started ringing non stop and he was spotted in swamp road, I was only 5 mins away. Then a family member rang and said he had just spotted him and he was in his car in McShanes road and was following him, he followed him into Berryfields. Cruz was just trotting along and much calmer than the first day. I followed their directions and we ended up at an empty section.Cruz was quite a distance away and lying resting & looking very exhausted in the long grass.

Everything in you at that moment wants to just yell their name and clap your hands to try and get them to come to you but it doesnt work.

I rang Don to say I had him in my sights & he reminded me how to approach him, but with where he was up against the fence I tried walking slowly towards him and sitting but he bolted. That moment was really hard seeing him run off not knowing if you would have another chance. I jumped in my car and had to drive out of Berryfields so lost sight of him. Lots of people had eyes on him though down the road, my phone was going crazy with messages. As I drove towards Connings people were pointing and then I pulled up beside 2 guys. One said I know where he went. He jumped in my car and we drove down the road a bit and down a driveway to a paddock that happened to be fully fenced and it had a gate. I drove in and asked the guys to shut the gate. Even at that moment I had a huge sense of relief knowing we were fenced in. Cruz was lying down in the grass at the end of the paddock. I started walking slowly towards him and then would sit down for a few minutes. I walked a bit closer but once again Cruz got up to run again. He headed for the gate but it was closed so he circled behind my car and then came up behind me putting him in a position where he could smell me. His head suddenly went up and his whole body changed, his tail started wagging and he recognized me. He ran to me whimpering and snuggled in for a cuddle and licking me like crazy. It was the best moment ever! Such relief and tears of joy to have him back. I will be forever grateful to everyone that helped us get Cruz back & a very special thankyou goes to Don Search/Dog Tracking for all his help, advice & support in getting our lovely boy Cruz back 💙 IF YOU LOSE YOUR DOG .. SEEK ADVICE ..WHAT WE THINK WE SHOULD DO IS OPPOSITE TO WHAT WE SHOULD DO .

When Cruz hopped in the car he collapsed with exhaustion. The photo is when we got to our gate and he sat up & realised we were home 🐾

Dons response … every lost dog is different ….
There are many influences ..
Location/time/reason/and much more …if there is one thing to take away from Cruz’s story … don’t chase a dog .. just note location and time .. and if you get time snap a photo..

Did you know that one of our fabulous walkers also offers homestays for dogs at her home in Motueka? We might be biased, but we cannot recommend Helen enough. She is fabulous with dogs and will take the very best care of yours when you are away.

Helen has small children at home so your dog needs to be cool with kids ✌️🐶

Check out her page for all the details…

This is the very handsome Gus. He is a very good boy for his walker Lou. Gus isn’t ready for group walks yet so Lou takes him for a solo walk each week to work on his training. Regular training walks with our pro walkers are a great way to boost your dog’s skills. We can work on recall, lead walking and manners in public.

If you are a dog owner, hopefully you are already aware that the dog control policy and bye law for TDC district is currently under review. You have until 8 September to make submissions to TDC about the changes proposed.

The proposed new policy and bye law will mean some pretty HUGE changes to where you can take your dog around Tasman and how you control them once there. So make sure you have your say before it’s too late…

I've written this article to give you my opinion and to help you get your head around some of the proposed changes. I'm very open to your comments and questions.
