We love getting feedback, congratulations Samantha and thank you for your kind words! 🥰

“To the wonderful team at Franklin Vets
Thank you so much for your commitment to Dressage in NZ. Your generous sponsorship at the recent Auckland Dressage Championships was greatly appreciated.
I competed my young horse Dominic in the Preliminary classes. We were lucky enough to take the win in the Franklin Vets sponsored 1A & 1D classes. How stunning are the beautiful Rosettes thank you.

I am very grateful for the wonderful veterinary services you provide; with your dedicated vets and wonderful staff I really appreciate your ongoing advice and support keeping my horses happy and healthy.

It is through the generosity of wonderful sponsors like you that the equestrian community can thrive and develop the sport of dressage that we all love. Your support truly makes a difference, and I am incredibly grateful.”

Have you checked your paddocks recently for any hazardous objects or branches that may have come down in the wind❓🌬️🌳

Unfortunately, 'Dee' wasn't as lucky with her Mum finding her in the morning with a puncture wound.
IV antibiotics for infection, along with cold hosing and walking to bring down the swelling were prescribed. It's also important to check your horse is up to date with their Tetanus Vaccination.👩‍⚕️💉

If the swelling doesn’t reduce in the next few days and there are still signs of discharge, an ultrasound will be required to rule out a foreign body.✅

🎄Are You Going Away Over The Festive Season❓

Do you have neighbours, friends or a house sitter looking after your horse❓

🚨It's important to provide clear and comprehensive information to ensure their well-being. Preparation is the key...

🐴 Ensure you leave a note with your home address, phone numbers, vet and neighbour contact numbers.
🐴 Leave your itinerary, and contact numbers of where you are staying.
🐴 Contact your vet clinic and ensure they have the name and number of who is looking after your horses and how long you will be away for.
🐴 Supply the carer with information and any quirks your horse may have.
🐴 Is your horse on medications or have any health concerns? Leave specific instructions.
🐴 Supply enough feed and feeding instructions, with names on buckets, halters and rugs, if you have more than one horse.
🐴 Do a walk through with the carer before you leave, to meet your horse and to see your routine.

By providing thorough information, it helps you enjoy a stress free break and your horses carer is confident and prepared to look after your bridle buddy!🥰

❓Is there anything else you can add to the list❓

👃 Protect Those Pink Noses! 👃

☀️🌡️With the warmer temperatures, protecting your horse's pink nose from sun damage is important, as pink skin is more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer.

Horses with light-coloured coats and certain parts of the horse's body, like the nose, ears, and areas with less pigmentation, are most vulnerable. What can you do...

👍Use a UV-protective nose cover that can be attached to a halter or bridle
👍Apply horse safe sunscreen and reapply regularly
👍Ensure your horse has access to shaded areas
👍Invest in fly masks with UV protection
👍Check you horses skin regularly

🎆 HOW TO PREPARE FOR FIREWORK SEASON

Fireworks season can be a stressful time for both horses and their owners. They can easily startle by the sight and loud noise, with fireworks unfortunately continuing from Guy Fawkes through until the New Year.

🎆Dealing With Horses and Fireworks

🐴 Wherever possible, get in touch with your neighbours to find out if they plan to let off fireworks. If they do, explain the dangers and ask them to set fireworks off in a direction that is well away from your animals. Knowing in advance when fireworks are likely to be set off enables you to prepare.

🐴 Decide whether to stable your horse if you have the option or leave them in the paddock. It is best to keep your horse in a familiar environment, with a normal routine and if possible with a companion to make them feel secure.

🐴 If you do decide to stable your horse, check thoroughly for anything that could cause potential injury.

🐴 Check paddock fencing is secure and that there are no foreign objects lying around that they might injure themselves on if they spook.

🐴 Provide distractions, try to keep your horse occupied with something they enjoy, like a treat ball or hay net, during fireworks displays. This can help redirect their focus away from the noise.

🐴 Have your vets number on speed dial in case of any accidents.

🐴Try to remain calm yourself and keep positive, as horses will sense unease in a person and be aware of your own safety, a startled horse can be dangerous so do not put yourself at risk when trying to deal with a spooked animal.

❗️If you know your horse will be stressed, talk to your vet about sedation. Call our team on 09 238 2471 we can help you decide what is best for your horse. ☎️❤️
