Some clinics have a clinic cat, fish or reptile, we have an alpaca šŸ˜‚

Eddie the alpaca joined us last week, as his owners had to relocate and couldnā€™t take him. Heā€™s been settling in great and loves his own flock of sheep šŸ‘ With 17years young, heā€™s considered an old man, as alpacas often live 15-20 years.

Alpacas are from the same family as the llama, but are a lot smaller šŸ¦™
Originally from South-America, theyā€™ve been kept as pets for over 6000 years already! Although they can live up to 4800MAS, they also thrive on farmland.
Alpacas make a humming sound when theyā€™re happy šŸ˜ƒ
They have no top-front teeth, what makes them look a bit goofy!
Say hi to Eddie when you coming to the clinic, he loves a little treat šŸ„• šŸ„¦

Just like last year weā€™ve donated a voucher for scanning 100 cows, so come along and go in the draw! šŸ®šŸ®

Our serious ad didnā€™t really work, so weā€™re trying a different approachā€¦:

Whoa, Putāruru Vets is on the hunt for a third vet to complete their vet squad! Want to be a part of it?

You'll work 15-40 hours a week in the beautiful South-Waikato, just a hop away from Taupō, Hamilton and epic beaches. With the focus on family time, youā€™ll fit right in with the small business vibes.

Our clients are mostly owner-operated dairy farms, with some companion animals, dry stock, and equine friends, so youā€™ll never get bored! Weā€™ll hook you up with a sweet 4WD vehicle, laptop, smartphone, and cover your NZVA & VCNZ registration. Plus, we even bake treats for morning tea!

Afterhours rotation is just 1:4, so you can actually enjoy your free time.
Does this sounds like you? Contact us now!

We already have people returning their used Teat Seal tubes to be recycled and that's great, but we would like to see more!

How it works:
ā€¢ Return used, clean tubes, caps and/or buckets to us.
ā€¢ We provide you with a returns receipt to include within your farm environment plan
ā€¢ Tubes are sent to the Plasback recycling center and recycled into Future posts or planting trays!

Please do not mix TeatsealĀ® tubes+caps with other products, as these canā€™t be recycled together (yet)!!

Do you want to know more or have any questions? Get in touch!

Itā€™s our birthday! šŸŽ

Today itā€™s been a year since Putāruru Vets opened its doors. Although sometimes it can be challenging to juggle everything, we love every day of it!

Thankfully we have a whole village behind us; family, friends, great clients, super helpful reps, a wholesome wholesaler, two little helpers that come to work although they might not want to and of course Lore, who not only is a great veterinarian but also an amazing person and forces us to take some time off so now and then!

So thank you to you all, up to the next exciting year !šŸ®

Itā€™s that time of the year again!

Our team is busy out and about to teat seal heifers and dry off herds. Administering a teat sealant to maiden heifers pre-calving reduces clinical mastitis around calving, thereby reducing the cost and frustration associated with heifer mastitis.

If you would like to get your animals done, get in touch!

Today we went out on farm to talk about the importance of body condition scoring.
With people starting to dry off, it is important to keep an eye on the weight of your cows. Especially those girls that need a little bit extra, so you can be sure they reach their 5.0 or 5.5 (for first and second calvers) target for calving.

For more information or any questions, donā€™t hesitate to contact us!

Did you know Lore is a Certified Body Condition Assessor?

Besides scanning herds and calving cows this week, she also had to do her Body Condition Scoring reassessment and passed the test šŸ˜€
So if you need your herd or individual cows scored for body condition, don't hestitate to give her a call!

08/03/2024

Although the temperatures have been dropping overnight, facial eczema spores are still present in the area. This week's spore count varies between 50.000 and 220.000spg, a big increase from previous weeks.

Some people asked how we count the spores under the microscope, do we really have to count over 100.000 spores? Thankfully not!

After you shake a container with the grass sample and water, both chambers of two Improved Neubauer haemocytometers with cover slips are filled by capillary action (with which the water flows under the cover slip without any force). Only the spores in the middle large square and the 4 large corner squares are counted. These are marked green in the photo, while the red ones are not counted for the total number.

By multiplying the number of spores found in those squares x 5000, you calculate the spores per gram grass (spg).

Have a lovely weekend!
