It's that time of year again, when we see more ear infections - poor River here, had an infection in her ear and shook her head so much, she caused a haematoma to form. It needed draining so a few stitches for her too. It's all better now, though - Ben removed the stitches and she is feeling like a champ again.

In a normal year, lambs do not require a drench at docking/tailing and a routine drench at this time may not be generating as much value as farmers might think.

According to Wormwise vet Ginny Dodunski, the scouring, reduced appetite, and poor growth rates associated with worms are partly a result of an animal’s immune response to internal parasites.

Young lambs have no immune response to worm larvae, so don’t suffer the same negative consequences associated with worm burdens.

Many of the worms that young lambs are ingesting cannot complete their lifecycle so numbers cannot build up until the lamb has a fully functioning rumen at around four to five weeks of age.

“So, if you’re drenching at docking you may not be kicking out as many worms as you think you are,” says Ginny.

‼️‼️ WARNING NITRATE POISIONING ‼️‼️ - PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN MOVING STOCK 🐄🌱🌿
Two of our vets responded to a nitrate poisoning on a runoff block yesterday afternoon with 8 dead and one surviving post treatment. The stock were beef yearlings that had been shifted onto a fresh break of annuals in the morning. The annual grass had been tested two weeks ago before starting on the annuals, with no concerns, but the recent rain has resulted in significant growth over the last couple of days. Interestingly, the farmer tested both the annual and the maize regrowth in the paddock after we left, and found that the annual was at 50-100, while the maize was 200+. (remember safe levels are under 50).
Although it may feel like there has been no rain, the rain we have had has induced a spurt of rapid growth - Another of our vets has had annual new grass tested at 250 that is only 7cm tall and 40 days since planting.
PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN MOVING STOCK – for the do’s and don’t to avoid nitrate poisoning read https://anexa.co.nz/nitrate-poisoning/ or have a chat with your lead Anexa Vet.
Nitrate testing kits are available from your local Anexa Vets.

It's been a facial eczema season like no other. The facial eczema risk is not over. With continued warm weather, there is likely to be areas of high spore counts around until the cold snap arrives. Spore counts are still high throughout the district. Keep this in mind as you dry off and send animals off for wintering. Discuss with your vet strategies to protect your stock. If you are concerned, we can still process grass samples from your farm; see our website for how to collect a pasture sample or talk to staff at your local Anexa clinic.
