Hi, I'm Francesca Bishell, a 17-year-old Show Jump rider based in Fernside Canterbury. I've been working with horses since I was born. Growing up, I did Pony Club. I have now got my full B certificate and am working on A and H levels. I've tried all disciplines, including showing, eventing, show hunter, and dressage, and I've specialised in show jumping. I've competed up to 1.35m level producing my own horses up the heights and taking youngsters up the grades. I pride myself on being a soft, effective and kind rider. I've been able to ride in Germany at Gulger Sport Horses training and competing up to 1.20m level. Last year I rode in Noumea for the inter pacific competition and brought home team 2nd. I've had experience with all types of horses. I can offer great facilities at mine to work horses including a 30x60m arena with show jumps, 3 stables and 3 yards, individual paddocks, fitness area and hacking, a 20-minute drive to the beach or forest and just 35min away from the Christchurch NEC.

For more info on pricing or wanting to book, contact me on 0223046179 or message me directly.

Make Them Carry Their Saddle

A father of a darling girl and I were talking last week and he said that he wanted his daughter to ride more and not have to do the work part of the catching, grooming, and saddling. I smiled as I explained.

Riding horses is a combination of strength, timing, and balance. Kids in this country are physically weak (unless they are actively involved with weight training and physical conditioning 4+ times a week.)

When you walk out to the field, you are clearing your stress from being under fluorescent lights all day; feeling the sun soak into your bones. As your body moves on uneven surfaces, it strengthens your legs and core.

When you groom your horse (especially currying), you are toning your arms and stabilizing your core.

When you carry your saddle, your arms, chest, and back are doing isolated strengthening work.

Being near horses, calms and makes you tune into the splendor of these empathetic animals.

When you ride at a posting trot, it’s equivalent to a slow jog calorie burn wise.

After a lesson, the riders are physically tired and mentally quiet and balanced.

Horses feel your heart beat and mirror your emotions back.

Riding large and somewhat unpredictable animals makes you resilient and pushes your expectations.

Working with horses is so much more than learning how to ride.

So parents, make your children carry their saddles. Don’t do the hard parts for them, as long term it actually hurts them. To advance with their riding, they must get stronger. You can help by doing the high parts.

I love having you all at the farm, and am so grateful to get to share these fascinating animals with you.

Thank you Thursday ❤️

I've been meaning to do a post for a while thanking some key people who really gave me a leg up to where I am today and I thought, why not start a thank you thread so others can also join in. There are so many people, too many to name, that could go on this post!!

One of the most influential people in my early life with horses was Re Foxwell. My coach from 7-10 years old, she was the one who made the most impact with her coaching, firm but fair, always held me accountable and motived me to do better. I lived for days spent at the yard, doing whatever I could to learn and get involved. This is where I decided one day, I wanted to be just like Re.

Once we moved to NZ I was lucky enough to find a village of awesome people involved with Coatesville Pony Club Offical Page - Yvonne Hawkins and Joy Browne in particular.
These ladies took me under their wing (my parents weren't horsey) and I count myself very lucky for their support, along with Lucy, Hayley, Hannah and their families. From hitching lifts to pony club and shows, lessons, rides from the bus to the paddock, ensuring I was given equal opportunities, finding me ponies to ride when I was horse-less - without them my teenage years would have looked very different.

Diamond Lodge Equestrian , who gave me my first coaching job at 15 and taught me everything I know today. She took a chance on me and trusted me with her entire school when she went on maternity leave.

Bartley Riding Academy who I worked for in my 20s pushed me to be better, to challenge myself with my coaching and I realized how important it was to have a solid focus on foundations.

Deb, for sharing her property and allowing MRS to exist! Forever greatful.

Mum and dad for supporting my journey from a young age but also teaching me to work for what I wanted. This taught me so much.

And lastly my family and friends for their support - between horses being my passion and my job, it's meant little time for much else. Having such understanding people around me has been so important. I can't wait to get some balance back in the near future 🥰

Who would you like to thank? Send them a message below 🫶🏻

A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life. And every day, coaches give their time to make a difference to the lives of our equestrians. Sport is fuelled by more than 300,000 coaches in New Zealand, and there are over 100 equestrian coaches currently registered with us here at ESNZ. Most of this workforce are volunteers who play a significant role in enabling our sport at all levels and across all disciplines. More on our website:
https://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/esnz/coaching/

Sport NZ, in collaboration with Coach For Life, is taking the opportunity during season transition to make coaches feel recognised and valued, due to their important role in
our communities.
Volunteer coaches who give their time to supporting our tamariki and rangatahi (children and teens) are everyday heroes who do a wide variety of day jobs and have a direct impact on the experience of young people, keeping them in the game for longer.

'Everyday Heroes’ is a campaign that highlights how important coaches are to the health and wellbeing of young people, through being the backbone of our sporting system.
It also showcases that many different kinds of people step up to be a coach – you don’t need to be an expert in sport!

Sport NZ and Coach For Life have launched a campaign to help volunteer coaches feel valued and recognised for the great work they do – they are everyday heroes! So say thanks to your coach by visiting https://www.thankscoach.co.nz/ to send your own personalised e-card or video message.
