🌟 Clayton - Mackenzie - 64km, Dec 30th 🌟

What a way to end 2023!
By far the toughest ride we have done this season, but always enjoyable as it’s a chance for my flat-Canterbury-land horse to compete on hills.

Despite breaking two stirrup buckles, having to divert to base adding a few kms, and a represent at vetting, Lucas managed to complete his final vetting in under 3 minutes with As in his book, really well metabolically, and sneaking a 3rd place. Very proud of him and how he pulled through.

As it’s the end of the year I need to thank and acknowledge our team behind Lucas and I this season, as we couldn’t do it without them!
⚒️ Our amazing farrier Shawn Valpy, who has been on board for years now, always keeping him sound and happy for me
🐴 Paula from PureEquine, our body worker. Paula has supported us through thick and thin, always lending an ear and her hands to help keep lucas happy
💉 Dani from Canterbury Equine Clinic for always being happy to be a helpful ear and going above and beyond to help Lucas this season and keep him comfortable.
😊 Andrea for always being a training and riding buddy, and for nothing ever being an issue, including loaning your gear to help us succeed! And to Marga for riding with us!
👨‍👩‍👦 My amazing family - especially my Husband - for being the rock at home while I’m chasing goals, and the ear on the end of the phone when I’m teary or celebrating.

Next up is SI Champs in 2 weeks - Distance TBC
Bring on 2024 and reaching more goals!

42km
1050m of elevation
600m climb
7.5hours

This by far was the most challenging hill ride I’ve attempted! Considering 40km would on average take us 3 hours, our time to complete this is a credit to how tough it was.
So proud of both of our boys Andrea! They gave and gave all day.

Beautiful station, beautiful riding, beautiful sights. Thanks Blue Mountain Station

🌟 CETRC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2023 🌟

What a great end to a difficult season. I wasn’t able to compete because of my ankle, but luckily Marga came to the rescue and rode Lucas with Andrea and Tahi in the 60km for 3rd place 🥉. Thanks for taking such good care of him! He’s been barefoot for 5 weeks and managed to get round in a great time despite a bit of stone, and is still happy and not foot sore.

🎉 We were able to celebrate success all round between our 3 camps with 100% completion between Zoey winning the 160km Junior, Marga coming 3rd in the 120km and the 60km, and Andrea 2nd in the 60km CTR. 🎉

Lucas arrived on base and was eating straight away, and was keen to go! After a year of trying to sort his ulcers and behaviour at rides we’ve finally made it and I have my horse back. Bring on next season!

Huge congratulations to everyone who competed and completed over the weekend. There were a bunch of 160km buckles given out which is the pinnacle of our sport. It was amazing being able to watch everyone succeed.

ABOUT MANUKA HONEY
Manuka honey has a unique antimicrobial activity and has been proven to have a topical broad-spectrum antimicrobial action, effective against over 60 strains of bacteria of both gram positive and gram negative, and includes resistant strains too!

These antimicrobial properties are further enhanced by the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO) in Manuka honey. MGO is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity of Manuka honey and is referred to as its Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). This is a standardised rating system for measuring the level of antimicrobial potency of Manuka honey on a scale from 5-26. As the UMF grade rises, so does the price and it can become very expensive.

Various studies have shown that a rating of 10 or more is usually all that is required to provide sufficient antimicrobial activity in the wound environment. This is useful to know when there are financial constraints, as using a lower UMF may ease financial burden without risking failure of treatment.

For equine wound care select a Manuka honey product that has a UMF of 10 or higher. A UMF of 10 corresponds to a MGO of 263.

Although most interest is focused on its antimicrobial property, more recent evidence indicates that Manuka honey also has great anti-inflammatory effects.
Manuka Honey increases production of inflammatory cytokines in leukocytes, aiding the growth of new epidermal tissue and blood vessels, which encourages the formation of healthy granulation tissue.

Manuka honey works best when applied ASAP after injury. Always have some on hand in your tack or vet box!

We’ve had a wee hiatus due to an unfortunate syndesmotic and ATFL ankle sprain in December. This hasn’t been our season between ulcers and injuries, but hey, that’s horses!
Today was my third attempt at riding since the sprain and smiles all round! Pain is at least 50% better, and I can load through my right leg now.
Next week is a review with the specialist to see if surgery is needed, and then we will decide if we can compete at Nationals over Easter.

This season went from goals of completing a 120km at nationals, dropped to 100km, then hopes for just becoming open at 80km. Now even if I’m able to ride by Easter I’ll be happy. There’s been lots of emotion and heartbreak, but hopefully we will come back stronger next season! 👌🏼💪🏼

Thanks to all my horsey friends who have supported us this season, regardless of the outcomes ❤️

⭐️ Canterbury Champs ⭐️

Covid and renovations have kept us a bit quiet on the competing front lately, but we managed to make it out to Cust for Champs this weekend.
Lucas has struggled with eating when away, so we stepped back and did a cruisy 40km, reducing his load physically so he could work on his emotional stress. We travelled up Friday and stayed until Sunday arvo to try help him out.

All and all a very successful weekend!

🥇Lucas won the 40km! We rode this mostly on our own but did have some lovely company to start
⚡️ Lucas ate some apples and picked at grain from when we arrived, and put his head into his bucket as soon as we finished so that was a huge win for us!
⚡️ Sunday morning Lucas ate all his feed and asked for more, which hasn’t happened since last year. So that’s awesome!
🥇 Our good friends Andrea and Tahi won their 64km CTR class! It was so fun helping crew another team through a successful ride.

Hopefully 2023 will bring a little more success for Lucas and I and if he keeps eating well we can start stepping back up to the multi loop open rides again. Overall I’m stoked with how the weekend went!

Thank you to Canterbury club for such an awesome weekend, and all the amazing sponsors, including Norton Equestrian who sponsored our event 🙏🙏

Last weekend Lucas and I completed another 40km and placed 2nd (by a whisker 🫣) and came away with best managed! Best managed is a data based award🥇 and the lowest score wins. It calculates HRs, lag times, time behind the leader, all our vetting scores and rider weight. I was very proud of lucas and stoked his training is paying off and showing in the vet ring.

Labour weekend was supposed to be our first open 80km, but I’ve decided to do one more 40km. Hi tummy had reacted badly to the grass this spring and it’s causing eating issues at rides. Hopefully he eats well this weekend, and we can step up on December at East Coast!

Thanks Petria Haigh Equestrian for a great ride last weekend!

First ride of the season ✅ Winner winner chicken dinner!

Lucas was a champ yesterday. We haven’t tried a mass race start since this time last year, and he was off like a champ, and maintained the lead to win it. 40km in 2hr57min, with a nice quick vet time at the end.
This was the fastest I’ve asked him to go and he really pulled through.
We were going to ride again today, but his DOMS is bothering him, and seeing as he did so well yesterday I decided to give him a break. It’s a tough call but it’s only the start of the season and his comfort comes first!

Bring on the 22/23 season!

Buying and selling horses is hard for any owner. I’ve had some sale outcomes go badly, and some that just make your heart soar! Rio and his new owner are such an awesome team and have big plans for the coming season. He’s out doing what he loves, and being loved while he does it. As an owner and seller it’s all you can ask for.
Well done and good luck Jordis and Rio! So happy for you both! ❤️💃🏻🐴

We are a couple weeks into Lucas’s strength programme. He’s a horse who had a “U” neck and who’s default position was head in the air. With the help of the equiband system, loaned by my lovely Bowen therapist Paula, I’m trying to get him to engage his core and work through from behind, helping to strengthen and build his top line. It’s a slow process but we are making some progress 💃🏻😊

⭐️Canterbury Endurance Championship 2022⭐️

What an amazing way to end the season! Lucas and I went to Cust on our own to attempt to qualify in his last novice 80km.
He was very excited to head out, and flew through the first two loops. By the third loop he was pretty over being alone, and after a slow start, we were caught by the other novice rider. They gave both of us some motivation to finish strong! Lucas was reluctant to trot out, but he was passed by the vet and is now Open! 🎉

Thank you to
⭐️Canterbury club, all the organisers, track markers, vets and officials for making the day possible, and all the sponsors including Saddlery Warehouse who sponsored supplements we won
⭐️ My amazing Husband and number one supporter for brining out the gear I forgot and coming and packing up camp for Me, and his tolerance of my competing and going away all season.
⭐️ My team of support - Lizelle Carson for being my amazing strapper throughout the season, PureEquine Paula Doherty for bodywork, Equestrian Online NZ for the saddle and fitting help, Shawn Valpy from Valpy farriers for the amazing corrective shoeing and Dani from Canterbury Equine Clinic for the phone calls and support throughout the season

Our goal for the season was to become open, and due to a vet out and cancelled rides this didn’t happen as quickly as we hoped, but none the less here we are. Now we can step up and start being competitive, and continue qualifying in the bigger distances.

To top it all off, Lucas is officially part of the Reekers family ❤️🐴❤️
After discussions with his owner I was leasing him off, we have now purchased Lucas! I want to say a huge thank you to his previous owner for trusting Lucas to us, and to my Husband for fully supporting me and my riding career. What a way to end the season indeed!!

Bring on next Season! For now, a well earned holiday for Lucas :)

TALL DARK AND HANDOME SEEKS KEEN FUN PARTNER

- 9yo TB by Captain Rio est 16.2hh -

Sweet and gentle, cuddle lover, seeks partner in crime to take on adventures. Interests include plodding around and being loved, but also won’t say no to a blat on the XC course. I’ve been told I have 3 balanced paces and am very bendy in all the right ways, and fences don’t bother me! Point me at an 80cm log and I’ll fly, ditches I’ll destroy, and water I’ll leap in and out of and make my b*$&h. Anything up to 90cm I’ve eaten for breakfast, both in the ring and out, and I’d love to go bigger and better!

My mum says I’ve done well at a 65cm ODE and excelled at XC, and at numerous SJ events up to 80cm. Apparently I’m an easy keeper and I dont care if i have friends or not. As long as I have you I’m happy.

Im currently in south Otago having a great time, but my adopted mum has some time restraints now, so I’m on the hunt for a new best friend! I’ve been doing lots of hacking and schooling and loving it.

If you’ve read this far you probably think I’m perfect, so should warn you - I have my quirks. I’m sensitive. Think lots of cuddles, gentle questions and I’ll give you gentle answers. I don’t like flapping birds, being chased by cows, or spooked by things in the bush. When this happens I’ll turn and run. I’ve also been known to jump a fence or two when I’m scared, and I’ve been chased by a dog in the paddock which really upset me. I’ve spent some time with a dog recently and am getting used to the little things.

Please only apply online if you’re experienced in managing TBs like me or spooky behaviour. I’m not your kick along pony club mount. If you yell at me and yank me around, I’ll tell you quick smart I’m not a fan of you- so don’t bother.

Please PM for any info - Low 🟢🟢🟢

⭐️Kiwi Conveyancing South Island Championships 2022⭐️

What a weekend! We did it! Got Lucas’s first 80km ticked off ✅
The odds were stacked against us! Between loosing the same shoe twice within 60km, the pouring rain causing slips and slides, and being genuinely bone cold, I’m so so proud of this horse for not only finishing and qualifying, but doing so competitively!

✅ Ride time of 6.44.57
✅ lag time average of 4minutes
✅ Great heart rates throughout with a final HR of 56

⭐️ Thank you to my amazing strapper Lizelle for your support! You looked after both of us, and did all the running and urgent farrier requests- I literally would have been struggling without you!

⭐️ Thanks to the host club, Heidi and her team, all the officials and vets who were present, and the farrier who saved the day, twice! Putting on a championship event is super hard these days with COVID, so thanks to all of you for making it happen

⭐️ And thank you to hubby for holding down the fort at home, and being nothing but supportive of me travelling to compete

Nice final training ride in the build up to South Island champs today. We did a lovely 6km walk with Tracy, and then a fast 45min 10km loop. Lucas loved it! Awesome foot work cantering through the forest, and great when passing other horses.

Next weekend we are heading to Marlborough for SI Champs to try tick his first 80km off the list ✅. We are also helping with sponsorship to support the club hosting. Should be a fun weekend!

🌟Mount Torlese 80km🌟

What a weekend! My first ever time travelling away without a crew and it was fun! Few hiccups with my stretcher being too long for the tent (so had to sleep in the float) and forgetting cutlery lol.

Unfortunately it wasn’t our weekend.
First loop was 40km, and Lucas threw a shoe about 15km in. We had to trot up a few times but passed the vet check. My amazing farrier sorted him out and we went back out for the 24km. Lucas was an absolute ⭐️ and was going really well. We passed our vet check but were asked to re-present, and unfortunately he was lame in the left hind.

This was an amazing experience for me travelling solo, and taking Lucas through his first 80km (which ended up being 64km).

Thanks so much to CETRC for holding an awesome ride. It was a really cool track! Thanks to the landowners and support staff!

Thanks to my hubby for joining me in the rain for the last vetting and pack up. Nothing worse then packing up by yourself!

And thanks to my horse! Lucas you’re a little champ. We will get there ❤️

🌟 Silverstream Charolais 🌟

This would have to be one of the most challenging and technical rides I’ve done, and it was so so much fun! Lucas was a whole new horse at the start, went out calmly which saved my un**es. We climbed over 1300m, and came back down to! The legs are feeling it today after hopping off and running a fair chunk.

Thanks so much to the organisers and landowners for a stunning ride! We had an amazing day. Thanks to my awesome crew member lizelle for being my cheerleader, and hubby for giving me a day off being a mum. And thanks to Lucas for handling the hills so well, and taking home the win!

We are privileged to be able to help these lovely people assisting horses like Apollo. They have initiated his rescue and are doing a fantastic job of restoring him to health. He has a long was to go, and it’s nice to be able to do a little bit to help. There have been some amazing donations going into his care! Well done ladies, you are amazing humans.

Go and check out the group Apollo’s Angels to follow his progress. There’s also Vet bank accounts you can donate some money into which goes towards his very extensive vet care.
