This is a public service announcement! ALWAYS watch your automatic garage door close entirely. While I do always make sure garage doors go all the way down, sometimes I can't see the whole thing. Ruffles here had a very lucky, Christmas miracle, escape from major injury after getting caught under her garage door.
She took a trip to the After Hrs Vet on Christmas Day, where an xray showed no internal injuries or broken bones. All other checks were good, just a tooth knocked out and shock. The vet suggested she buys a lotto ticket, and the nurses said how lovely she is

The gorgeous Xena in her snazzy new pet tag made by BB Design. The best pet tags ever. Georgia lost hers in the middle of winter. I found it months later in the depths of the garden, gave it a wash, good as new!

Xena is the picture of health and happiness as she settles in. So used to her regular supply of food that she's developing fussiness 🙄 How wrong was I to think she might not be fussy due to her time as a stray surviving on whatever she could scavenge and catch.

Always happy to be called to collect a found bird. This pigeon waltzed on in to a friend's lounge, luckily she was quick enough to remove the cat! It looks quite indignant about the whole experience. The owner has been messaged as they'd posted on the local lost and found pets page. What a fun addition to the evening pigeon pick up was. (It has got a towel under its feet now to protect it from the bars.)

By July 2026 there will be no more greyhound racing! This is wonderful news, I'm not all for animal racing. I am all for greyhounds as pets! If you've ever considered the idea of adopting a greyhound, do it now! They are fabulous pets, lots of sleeping, not lots of exercise, love snugs.

There have been three reviews in recent years highlighting animal welfare concerns.

Fresh branches make for very happy birds! Upside of those big winds yesterday.
If anyone is ever pruning decent size branches, please let me know. Depending on the tree, I'll be there to collect those branches. I believe I have hit peak cool stage, picking out "good" branches from local parks 😆 such happy birds. 🦜🌳😊

Meet Xena 🐈
Xena has been living in the roof of Waitaha School for a while now with her kittens. The school has been trying to catch her and her babies for over a month (after one kitten exposed their position by falling down a wall). Finally she was captured on Friday. Her kittens caught earlier in the week. Kittens are all homed with teachers of the school, I (am a giant sucker! As is my daughter) have taken Mum.
Sweet wee girl, very thin and skittish of new people and sudden movements. But friendly as can be once she's over her worries, and has the biggest purr!
Booked in for a spey and overall health check on Monday (no microchip and no response from efforts to find a previous home as yet). As long as she fits in here she'll be staying :)

My last day seeing Freya and Bjorn today. Always sad when pets I've known for many years move away. Freya is unlikely to miss me turning up and insisting a walk is good for her health 😆 safe travels wee dogs (and your humans and cats), enjoy all the space at your new place!

Boss of the house thought this 9 balloon and presents were for her yesterday. She even put this cutesy cutesy face on to win hearts. Unfortunately for her, she's actually only turning 5 soon, and the celebrations were for the youngest human in the house! 🎂🥳🎉🎈🐾

Baby budgies! It's been a fun time since early October when they hatched, watching them grow and develop. As of today both left the nest to live in the big wide world of the aviary. Their parents have been just the best a pair of wee babies could ask for.

💯% this. Dog walking sounds easy peasy, it can be. However there is always a lot of other factors and things to consider. The what if's, the dogs personality, an awareness of your surroundings. I've had some stressful near miss incidents, only one particularly awful incident (thankfully), and lots of times that could have gone bad but didn't due to my due diligence. A safe, enjoyable walk for all involved is the aim every time. 🚶‍♀️ 🐕 🐾

So this isn't going to be a popular post, but as it's something I feel strongly about I'm going to put it out there ...
As school heads towards finishing, and kids are encouraged to find a paying job (especially in the current economic climate) I'm seeing increasing numbers of posts on community pages offering to walk, feed, baby sit, cuddle, supervise or otherwise interact with your pets while you are away/ working/ busy with the holiday period. So I'm talking specifically about dogs here. There has been a huge amount of press coverage in the last few months about 'pack walkers' and the problems with a lack of control and a lack of qualifications and registration, meaning anyone can do this, whether they know what they're doing or not.

Guess what? Same goes with the people you allow into your home to look after your dog(s). I've just seen a post with two young people, maybe around 13/14 years of age, offering to walk dogs. My 30kg Labrador could pull me off my feet if he chose to, so he'd have a field day with one of them. In addition, I doubt very much if they would have the common sense or clear headedness if something were to go wrong while they were out with your dog. What if immediate Veterinary care was required. What if the dog needed carrying somewhere?

If you're a parent of a child with these ideas, while I admire their initiative, I'd quietly stear them in another direction. It can go so terribly wrong very quickly, with the best of intentions, and society will ALWAYS blame the dog. You are your dogs advocate, so please do not put them in this position.
