About us

Nicola worked as a large animal veterinarian in the Rotorua area between 2008 and 2019. Her range of work between 2011 and 2019 was focused predominantly on the sport horse and through this she developed a special interest in equine dentistry.

Being a horse owner and dressage rider herself, she has witnessed first hand how good dental care can really bring out the best in performance horses. She finds it very rewarding to help riders accomplish a better feel through the reins due to better acceptance of the bit by the horse - a comfortable mouth is key.

Performance Dentistry offers veterinary equine dentistry and vaccination services in the larger Rotorua and Taupo areas.

A typical dental consult includes a discussion around any performance issues, nutritional requirements, bitting and acceptance of the contact. The horse is then examined physically (heart and lungs) before a light sedation is given. This allows me to give the horse a thorough oral examination, looking at the entire oral cavity including gums, cheeks, tongue and spaces between the teeth. I use a mouth speculum, mirror and pick and a strong light source to show owners the inside of their horse’s mouth and if necessary, I will take photos or video recordings inside the mouth to keep a record of the condition of the teeth. Once the problem sites are identified, I reduce any sharp enamel points and balance the occlusion angles to make the horse as comfortable as possible in the mouth. Wolf teeth can be assessed and extracted if they are causing an issue.
