Well we just had a HUGE weekend with 5 shows- two Cavalier Specialty shows and three toy shows.
We took four dogs. The Specialty Show judges were
Greg Browne - Eireannmada Cavaliers, Victoria, Aust
Derrick Seow - Riccaval Cavaliers, Malaysia

Viewlands Walking Moose was Best Intermediate Dog of Breed in each show. He also received the Best Parti Colour sash.
Piwakawaka Icarus Shelbysta was Best Puppy Dog of Breed in each show.
Piwakawaka Wyndsoar received a trophy from the Tiki
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club for reaching Neuter Champion status recently.
Piwakawaka Aurora Memphis, our pretty girl dances to hed own tune so unfortunately, had no wins, just lots of personality and excitement at seeing everyone.

In 2020 our NZN Champion Piwakawaka Wyndsoar, sired his one and only litter.
From that litter we kept one pup, our Piwakawaka Sweet Primrose.
Last month, at 4 years old, our beautiful Primrose, had her first litter, to carry on our Windy's line.
Prim is doing an amazing job being a mum. Pups are now 4 weeks old and chubby little bubbies at 1.3kg

I finally got my act together and sent Windy's Challenge Certificates for Best Neuter Dog of Breed into DOGSNZ (NZKennel Club).
His Champion application has been accepted & we received his Certificate in the post.

It's been a busy few weeks at Piwakawaka Ridge.
Our two pups girl Aurora Memphis & boy Icarus Shelbysta have been jostling for position of Best Pup of Breed in a few shows, each taking their turn. Then Cary (Icarus) took out the Best Pup of the Toy Group spot. We were all absolutely thrilled.
A couple of weeks ago our very handsome Viewlands Walking Moose got another two Best Dog of Breed Challenge Certificates and a Best of Breed, taking him 1/2 way towards being a Champion.
Then in the weekend we had a happy & sad moment as our beautiful little Pup Melody headed off to her Furever Family. I know she will be loved to bits & spoilt rotten. We are looking forward to hearing all about her adventures.
We have also had one of our previous pups come and stay for a week while her family are away. Its been lively having her back 💕 The beautiful Daisy goes home next weekend.

This popped up on my personal FB as a memory from five years ago. I think it was my 2nd ever show/ribbon parade. Happy & sad memories.

If i remember correctly, pups Florence (B&T) & Wyndsoar(Ruby) from our first Piwakawaka litter were in the Puppy category and Blossom ( our first Tri) and Cinnamon (our first Blenheim) were Baby Puppy.

Unfortunately a couple of years later we lost our beautiful wee Cinnamon when she was attacked by a larger dog on a walk. Our vet tried for 5 hours to save her, but was unable to.

Tribute To A Ruby Princess:

This is a tribute to our Momma Bear Ariel.
Named after that other Red Head Princess, Ariel came to live with us mid 2017 as our Foundation bitch & stole our hearts. Although I had previously had a Cavalier as a pet, having no knowledge of showing, little knowledge of breeding & no mentor, I embarked on the journey towards building Piwakawak Ridge pedigree Cavalier kennel- foolishly thinking it would be easy.
I started joining clubs, health testing- DNA for EF, CC/DE and DM, along with specialist eye certs, heart and patella checks.
Like a true princess Ariel took each day in her stride, and over the years has been the most attentive and playful mum of 15 pups. We kept a Black & Tan bitch (Florence) & a Ruby boy (Wyndsoar) from her first litter. Wyndsoar became our first DOGSNZ (NZ Kennel Club) Champion (neutered).
On 27 February 2024, her final litter of one female pup, was born by cesarean. We had hoped for a Ruby to carry on our whole colour lines, but alas that was not to be for us. Ariel's final pup is a beautiful, healthy Blenheim girl called Misty Melody of Piwakawaka. 'Misty' to acknowledge our teary eyes with the last of a legacy, and Melody, as that other Redhead Princess also had a daughter named Melody 😉
We still have our B&T Florence and we hope one day we can bring the whole colours back to our kennel. In the meantime, we salute our beautiful Red Head Matriarch Ariel and look forward to hearing of all the cuddles and adventures that our Princess in Waiting, Misty Melody, will have when she is old enough to venture out into the wide world with her new family and fly the Piwakawaka flag for her mother's legacy.

Our boys have been very busy over the start of the year. Congratulations to:

Windy has earned enough Challenge Certificates to be recognized as a (neuter) Champion (pending DOGSNZ approval)
Moose has started his journey
Cary is consistently winning his class (although occasionally knocked out by his sister Piwakawaka Aurora Memphis) and he has taken Baby Puppy in the Toy Group.

We have been very busy over the last few weeks attending shows. The three dogs we have been taking have done us proud every time, consistently getting placings..
Our wee Tricolour girl Piwakawaka Aurora Memphis was Bitch Baby Puppy of Breed
Our Blenheim.boy Piwakawaka Icarus Shelbysta has consistently Baby Puppy Dog of Breed and Baby Puppy of Breed. He blew us out of the water on Saturday. Despite the heavy rain and us all being drenched to the skin, he was chosen by judge Margaret Joyce James (Aust) as Best Baby Puppy of Group.
Our gorgeous Viewlands Walking Moose has also consistently been taking out the Intermediate Dog of Breed place and we were so proud of him when he was also Reserve Dog of Group under Margaret Joyce Jame's.

The dogs were pretty tired out yesterday evening after a big day in the Hawkes Bay showing. Two shows in 30 ° - lots of cooling mats, water spray bottles, iced drinking water and battery fan.
Very proud of my babies and their great results.

Our handsome boy, Viewlands Walking Moose, turned two a couple of weeks ago and has been busy since.
He recently went to the Franklin Champ Show and was judged Best Intermediate Dog of breed.
He also went to the Hutt Valley 2 Champs shows and was judged Best Intermediate of Breed
Then at the Hutt Valley Ribbon Parade he was Best Intermediate Dog of Breed, Best Intermeduate of Breed, Best of Breed and Reserve of Group
Such a clever, handsome boy
Today he is being shown at the 2x Kapi Mana Champ shiws by his breeder, Lous Strickett of Viewlands Kennel and on Saturday he will be shown again by her at the 2x Wairarapa Champ shows.

Make your Decision based on rational logical choices.

1. Your bow tied fuzzy is a 10-15+ year commitment with all the expenses including training, grooming, vetting, boarding, and surgeries & recoveries. Know this.

2. The adult owners choices are responsible for the dog’s behavior , always. Own it. Training will help you make the right choices.

3. Crate training is a must and non-negotiable. Don’t get caught up in the fairies and rainbows experts. You’ll regret it.

4. Know the genetics. Even hard core breeds can do well as pets when they come from GOOD breeding and bloodlines. Bad genetics are difficult to clean up, even with training.

5. Puppies do NOT need 100% free roam, lots of dogs, people and over socialization. They need you. Over expose, and enjoy a dog that pays no attention to you.

6. Ask yourself ahead of time, is anyone going to be allergic? Expecting a baby? Planning on moving? Live in a no pets allowed apartment? Works long hours? Already has a dog reactive dog? These are the “reasons” dogs are given up RIGHT AFTER THE NEW YEAR. Plan ahead.

7. Know the breed. There’s lots of breed information available online. Know the pros and cons for your lifestyle.

8. Drop the “my puppy must love everything and everyone” expectations. Most dogs are selective. It’s normal.

9. Steer clear of MOST free roam only daycares. They will expect your puppy to never defend itself, never growl, never nip and love everyone and everything. All of this, without proper evaluation. This sets up dogs to bully or be bullied as the “norm. It’s a breeding ground for dog reactivity.

10. The leash is your friend. Be their energy management system. What you allow to happen wlll happen. Bad behavior is YOUR choice to allow.

Research! Adopt safe adoptable dogs or invest in a good reputable breeder and good training now to save you a lot of money and heartache later.

We have had some changes here. A couple of both happy and sad days in the last few weeks🙃
I mentioned our handsome Wyndsoar (Windy) retired to live the quiet life. He has gone to live with our son who works mainly from home & is loving all the one on one attention.
The beautiful Mia-Mouse, who we had gotten back as her owner was unable to take her when moving, has now gone on the next part of her life journey. She has gone to a wonderful rural property with another three Cavaliers & is having the time of her life chasing around like a youngster💕

Today we say Goodbye to our beautiful trophies from the 2022 Tiki Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club
Silver Piper Championship Show. Our gorgeous
Viewlands Walking Moose was Best Novice and our handsome Piwakawaka Wyndsoar was Best Stud Dog. It was with pride & a priviledge being able to display these two trophies for a year. Tomorrow we will take Moose & our new Baby Puppy Aurora Memphis Piwakawaka and try again. Our handsome Windy has retired to the quiet life. We may or may not bring home prizes, but you never know unless you try.

The house is a little quieter, but we always miss their special & individual personalities.
