The best possible update for Homer/Max! 🥳🥳🥳🥳

MAX UPDATE...

Sorry for the late update.

But surgery went really well🥳
The surgeon was able to place a stent and 20 coils (the most he's ever placed!)
It's a really great result and now it's all about healing and his blood flow slowly redirecting. We are one huge and important step closer to Max's happy ever after🥰

Thank you so much HUHA community. You did this for him! ❤️❤️❤️

And thank you team VSA, you are absolute legends🤩

We know that a lot of our clients have asked for an update regarding Homer/Max who was hanging out at the clinic at the start of Summer. We're very excited to share this update from the incredible team at HUHANZ - he's getting his surgery!
Because of the complicated nature of his shunt it is having to be done at a specialist surgical practice in Auckland so HUHA are continuing to fundraise to cover the (significant) costs, details are on their page.
Surgery is booked for 18 April, so please keep him in your thoughts!

Those of you who have visited recently would have seen this playful pair in the front of our clinic. They have been nurtured and cared for by our nurses for a few weeks and are soon ready for adoption. They are a bonded pair and we would ideally re-home them together. If you think there’s room in your heart and home for them please give Lyn from CARE a call. And if anyone wants to come and meet these characters, you know where to find them!!

Keeping with our feathered theme…
Another beautiful bird who accompanied Shelley recently; A Kererū with a ruptured crop!
Who knew pigeons could randomly burst their crops!?!? - well Shelley did 😅

Check out the delicate surgery performed by Dani to piece the crop and skin back together, and the dedicated and tricky anaesthesia monitored by Karen and Aimee.

The Kererū made a full recovery - and was released back into the wild where no doubt it is showing off its cool scar to its Kererū buddies.

Who who who is the cutest of them all….?

Many of you will know Shelley, maybe you know her as “The Bird Lady” 😅 🐧🐦🐤🐔

She does amazing, dedicated work with many rescued birds native or otherwise, and we tend to see her fairly regularly with birds that need further investigation.

A while ago, at our request, she brought in this gorgeous wee soul - a precious juvenile Morepork. How FLUFFY!!!

And after being cared for until adulthood, look at what a stunning creature it has become!!

Sometimes we struggle to give you back the cute or cuddly pets that come in. And this time we didn’t have to… 🙈🙈

Meet Meatball and Spaghetti - the two wild kittens found by Richmond kindy. Although tense and terrified, they are just too beautiful to let go.

So, with the help of CARE, our wonderful nurses stepped in to foster the pint sized pair. Determined to break down those walls and turn them into loving house mates, they are being showered in love and affection.

Will it become a foster fail ? … only time will tell 😌

Understandable that they might have a few parasites 😬😬😬 the fleas were feasting and the worms… well, as you can see they are all being evicted!! 🤢🤢

More good boys to share!

This is the BIGGEST BOY! A gentleman and a giant - meet Niko. He is a Dane crossed with a Mastiff and loves allllll the cuddles.

He came in this week for Entropion surgery; this is a nip/tuck around his eyes to stop rolling in eyelids irritating the surface of his eyes.

We needed a secondary prep table to fit his big body on! Couldn’t help comparing his size to nurse Aimee 😅😅😅

This guy stole some hearts last week, with his good looks and chilled demeanour.

Kenny the Huntaway visited after developing a sore, bloated stomach overnight. Huntaway dogs have a predilection for twisted stomachs so we were quick to act. He immediately received pain relief, IV fluids and we took x-rays of his abdomen to see what was going on.

The first x-ray shows a very large dilated stomach, with a huge amount of chewed up bones. We gave him a touch of sedation and placed a stomach tube, hoping to decompress him. You’ll see in the next photo a large amount of discoloured fluid was removed , over 2 litres in fact!

He was a lot more comfortable after his stomach wasn’t so stretched! Because he was stable and much happier, we continued his pain relief and fluids and monitored him overnight hoping he would continue to improve without needing surgery.

The next day after several meals and a tonne of love Kenny was feeling a lot better. Most of his stomach contents had moved through into his small and large intestine and we (sadly but) gladly sent him home .

Look who stopped in yesterday!

This is Echo, the brave and beautiful LandSAR (Search and Rescue) dog.

He was tracking through an estuary, but when he reappeared, his handler Steve found a leg laceration on Echo. Steve did an excellent job cleaning it and creating steri-strip sutures to close the wound.

So much of a good job in fact that when he came into the clinic, not much needed to be done!! He was given some medication and his bandage replaced (and donned with a dinosaur, because what a goooood boy!).

Homer is moving on!
We're very pleased to let everyone know that Homer is heading to Otaki tomorrow to the wonderful people at HUHANZ who have swooped in like angels to take over his case.
Fundraising is ongoing for Homer's surgery and we'll be sharing the details for donations to HUHA once they're available. We will wind up the givealittle page at the end of this month, but you can still donate here until then: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/homer-needs-a-life-saving-surgery
We'd like to thank all of our wonderful clients who have donated on his givealittle page or in clinic - he'll be heading down with around $2,500 (the final amount is still coming from givealittle) towards his surgery.

Some of you may have seen Homer hanging out in the office at work this week. Unfortunately we got confirmation today that he needs a specialty surgery to save his life. One of our vet nurses adopted Homer when his owners were unable to continue his treatment and we're hoping to raise money towards his surgery. Please share or donate if you can!

With the Holiday Season upon us, a lot of our furry family members may be stopping in at the cattery or kennel in the coming months so this is a good time to check whether they are up-to-date with vaccinations and flea and worm treatments.

If it’s been a while since your pet has been vaccinated, your cattery or kennel may require a 10 day stand down before being able to welcome them, so give us a call on 07 376 5106 to get in early and avoid needing to change any holiday plans!

Please note that we will be closed for the statutory holidays and weekends, and will have very limited availability for routine appointments during this time, so book your appointments now to avoid delays around Christmas and New Year.

If you have a known sock monster in your house.. (a real one - not the one we all blame for our missing socks) .. what do you do when a sock disappears?

You come to see us of course!

Bella the beautiful sock monster made a meal out of a sock this morning, bound to cause trouble getting through her narrow intestines. Luckily, her owners are very vigilant and noticed the sock was missing, and our team gave her a touch of something to make it reappear.

She looks perhaps a little regretful at her choice of breakfast.

26/04/2023

Tomorrow (Thursday 26th April) we will be closed for stocktake until 1:00pm. We'll still be admitting our surgical patients between 8:00am - 8:30am but won't be open for consultations or retail clients until the afternoon. Our phone line will be diverted until 1:00pm to enable us to get the stocktake done as quickly as possible. Thanks for your understanding!

We are seeing puppies with parvovirus in Taupo more frequently through Summer, (or what was supposed to be Summer). Most of these cases are because the pups are not vaccinated or only partially vaccinated.

Puppy vaccination protocols generally start at 6-8 weeks. Get ‘em protected!!!

With parvovirus rearing its ugly head recently, we feel like a wee bit of information could help save a few lives.

If a female dog has been vaccinated against parvovirus, she passes on passive immunity to her pups which gradually wears off between 6 and 18 weeks. High levels of antibodies from the pups mother will block the effectiveness of the parvovirus vaccine early in this period. However, as the immunity naturally declines, protection can be provided though the vaccine.

Ideally we would vaccinate a pup every two weeks through this period to give the best protection, since we don't know when any one pup will reach this ideal time where the vaccine will be the most effective.

The guidelines we recommend is vaccinating a pup from 6-8 weeks of age, every 4 weeks with the last vaccine around 16 weeks of age. They are not fully protected until this last vaccine.

If a pup is not vaccinated and the mothers natural protection wanes... they are susceptible.

One teaspoon of infected vomit or p**p can infect over ONE MILLION dogs. It is ridiculously contagious! And most pups who contract the virus will die. And it's a horrible, horrible way to die.

🐶🐶VACCINATION IS SO IMPORTANT 🐶🐶
