Pet Refuge provides temporary shelter for pets, enabling their owners to escape abuse. Many women delay leaving family violence out of fear for their pets and the overwhelming need for our service has seen us running at full capacity for the last five months.
We need funds now to ensure we can keep saying yes to helping these pets and their families.
Donate $25 today and help victims and their pets leave. https://bit.ly/3QKiTol

Rebecca MacPherson says she lives for her dogs, sharing her bed with 10 of them and cooking them meat, but blamed dirty conditions on illness and sluggish puppy sales.

Calling Masterton Landlords!!

We have been asked to help find a home for an older person with a disability and their assistance dog. They have had no luck in their search so far and are currently having to stay in a cold and damp caravan.

If you have a modest 2bedroom with a fenced yard where they could stay together, they would be incredibly grateful.

The budget is $400/week (ACC will pay for a ramp etc if needed) and both dog and owner have references!

Please share...noone should have to choose being separated from their much loved assistance pet..or living in cold dank conditions. Let's help them find a home xx

F..ken gutless human beings that can do this disgusting thing to another living being. Will they be caught and brought to justice, probably not as this is what our laws allow. I feel helpless and ashamed of the human race right now!!!!!!!

I saw this posted on another site, food for thought!!

The human has approximately 1 billion neurons in their brain while the canine has appoximately 500 million. This is a comparison of the two species and the silly expectations people place on dogs:

1) Human - Given two plus years to accomplish potty training.
1) Canine - Human wants canine potty trainined in two weeks or they will have to rehome the dog....Please take the diaper off your eight month old human and let them crawl around your floor, lets just see the results....

2) Human - Gives human babies pain relievers and various numbing agents to help appease the pain of teething.
2) Canine - Demands Dog Trainer tells them how to reprimand their dog for chewing.

3) Human - Encourages young humans to run and play with endless forms of mental and physical stimulation.
3) Canine - “I have got to teach this dog to calm down!!!”

4) Human - Given 20 plus years to complete an education and become a productive member of society.
4) Canine - Expected to behave flawlessly after 6 weeks of training.

5) Human - Given sick and personal days from work and endless excuses for poor performance.
5) Canine - Expects to perfom perfectly 365 days a year with no questions asked. Canines are also not allowed to feel bad or forget.

6) Human - Expects a pay raise anually for the job they perform.
6) Canine - Humans demand their dog perform more every year and don’t believe they should reward the dog for the work they perform.

Dear human....If you don’t train, don’t complain!"

Well said and great advice

When humans adopt dogs and bring them into our lives, we often have the dog's best interests at heart.
We try to give them what we think they need: a fancy groom, the most expensive toys, a comfy bed, lots of cuddles, kisses and hugs, and even an Instagram page for example.
The problem is when we make assumptions based not on what the canines need, but on what we humans think they need.
By humanizing dogs, we are damaging them.
Your dog craves guidance, routine, socialization and stimulation.
So, before spending the next dollar on your dog, think twice if your doggie will truly appreciate it.
Maybe instead of investing in another toy, you could get some training classes or buy a training book.
Instead of spending time on your dog's Instagram, spend some outside time building your bond as a dog parent.
Think dog, stop thinking human.

”The famous Italian diver Enzo Maiorca dove into the sea of Syracuse and was talking to his daughter Rossana who was aboard the boat. Ready to go in, he felt something slightly hit his back. He turned and saw a dolphin. Then he realized that the dolphin did not want to play but to express something. The animal dove and Enzo followed.
At a depth of about 12 meters, trapped in an abandoned net, there was another dolphin. Enzo quickly asked his daughter to grab the diving knives. Soon, the two of them managed to free the dolphin, which, at the end of the ordeal, emerged, issued an "almost human cry" (describes Enzo). (A dolphin can stay under water for up to 10 minutes, then it drowns.)
The released dolphin was helped to the surface by Enzo, Rosana and the other dolphin. That’s when the surprise came: she was pregnant!
The male circled them, and then stopped in front of Enzo, touched his cheek (like a kiss), in a gesture of gratitude and then they both swam off.
Enzo Maiorca ended his speech by saying: “Until man learns to respect and speak to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth." ~ Vangelis.”

You're looking for an easy way to settle your dog down!

đŸ¶ You will love the simplicity of scatter feeding.
đŸ¶ Foraging for food is a natural and relaxing behaviour.
đŸ¶Scatter feeding will use up a lot of energy and encourage relaxation.
đŸ¶Sniffing is tiring.
đŸ¶For best results, scatter feed your dog regularly with a food they love.

Throw some tiny tasty treats (or their dinner if it's suitable) around your home or outside space and send your dog off to find them. You can also drop a few tiny treats on walks, if you need to distract your dog. It's much easier than trying to get their attention onto you.

NZ pet owners, you are breaking us please stop.

As I sit here with these two pups safely sleeping on my lap, I wonder why we in the animal industry (rescues, animal control officers, animal behaviourists, trainers, vets and vet nurses) care more about animals than some of their owners do. These babies were 4 weeks old when they came to me. Found dumped in a forest, in the middle of winter by a hunter. Had he not found them and brought them to a rescue, they would have died of exposure. Cold, hungry, alone.

Every rescue in NZ can tell similar stories. We are physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted trying to help, focusing on saving the animals. Trying to be diplomatic amid the constant, casual disregard that people are showing these animals who are reliant on us for their lives.

The rescues are full. The pounds are full. You are forcing all of us to make hard decisions we never wanted to make. WE DON'T WANT YOUR ANIMALS. Not the rescues or the pounds. We want YOU to take responsibility for your animals. They want YOU their family to keep them and love them. There is no mythical "better life" elsewhere. There is only heartbreak as you leave them behind. Stand up and take responsibility. Make changes to your lifestyle because THAT is what it means when you take a vulnerable animal into your life. If you are not willing to change your lifestyle to fit in caring for a pet, don't get one. And for God's sake desex your dogs. Don't let them breed and create more unwanted animals.

I know there are some amazing animal owners out there and they will be reading this post. This is not aimed at you. But we all need to take responsibility here to make a difference.

We have been pushed into a position we promised ourselves we would never be in. We actually don't have the funds in our account to cover the future vet costs of all our current animals. We are close to the point of closing our doors until more dogs are adopted and more funds come in.

There are four ways you can help us now. ADOPT. FOSTER. DONATE. SHARE.

More details at our website: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz

Please, please take responsibility for your animals. It's not fair on them or us to expect others to pick up the pieces.

"Today I found this kid tied up with a bag next to him that had his things. I didn't think if I have space, if I have a job, what my husband will say or come on baby let someone else do it. I just took him, I told him it's okay that he is scared, that I understand and that everything will be fine. I am sharing the photo so everyone can see the look of terror, sadness and shock in his eyes. The animal is in shock just like a human child would be.
Today we will become a family. I hope our hug heals this traumatic experience"
