Sadly we have been seeing a few cases of parvovirus recently, this virus can be deadly to your puppies or dog!

Please make sure:
• Your puppies have received the full vaccination course
• Your adult dogs’ vaccinations/ boosters are up to date
• Dogs and puppies undergoing the vaccination course are kept away from public areas, parks, the lake and dog exercise areas (they are not fully protected until 10-14 days after their last vaccination).

JOB POSITION: Production Animal Veterinarian - Reporoa

An opportunity has arisen for a veterinarian to join our team in our BESTPractice accredited clinic in Reporoa. Base yourself in either Taupo or Rotorua (an easy 30 minute commute) or live locally and become a part of Reporoa’s friendly farming community.

The primary focus for this position is providing preventative and productivity-based solutions to our proactive dairy farming clients. We encourage involvement in our clients’ businesses, as well as providing emergency services, so an interest in whole herd health is essential. We believe in tackling any big jobs as a team, therefore it will also involve working throughout our entire practice area with the PA Vet and Technician teams.

We’re looking for a vet with some experience and can be flexible with days of work for the right candidate. After-hours is exclusively Production Animal within a roster of not more than 1 in 5 weekends, handsomely remunerated.

We are seeing a lot of grass seed issues at the moment, so here are a few things to look out for!

Grass seeds are sharply pointed at the end and can easily work their way through your pet’s skin to cause problems. The most common places we see them are in between the toes and in the ears but they can work their way in anywhere, such as the armpits and eyes. Dogs that have hairy or fluffy feet are more likely to get the grass seeds stuck in the fur in their feet and then they can easily migrate under the skin. The things to look out for are sudden onset lameness and/or licking in the affected area. You will often see a small red swelling and sometimes a discharge as well. If they get stuck in the ears then you will see sudden pain associated with the ears and you often won’t see any discharge, like you can get with an ear infection.

Here are some pictures of a few different grass seeds that we have pulled out from dogs feet, ears and eyes in the last month. The seeds can range in size from very small to extra large barley grass! Louie had over 100 small seeds pulled out from under the skin between his toes – we even found 10 seeds in one pocket!! We had 3 of our team working on Louie’s feet and our lovely vet student helping so that Louie wasn’t under anaesthetic for too long. These seeds were super tiny and extra hard to see under his thick fur.

If you are concerned that your pet has a grass seed somewhere then please call us to make an appointment for your pet to be checked by our veterinary team. To help prevent grass seed issues you can make sure that feet are groomed short and to check in their ears, between the toes and around the pads after going for walks in the long grass.

It's flea season again!
Around this time of the year we start seeing more and more problems associated with flea infestation of pets. Fleas can cause a constant irritation and annoyance for affected pets.
We recommend you pre-empt these issues by using routine flea treatment. There are many options available so pop into your nearest VetPlus clinic and we can discuss the best option for you and your beloved pet.

The VetPlus crew headed back to school during October, attending and judging at the rural school calf and lamb days in our area.
It's so neat to see the dedication and love that these children put into rearing their animals.
Children and pets competed at their own school days and then the big finale was the Rotorua District Schools Group Day, this year this was held at Ngakuru School. It was a fantastic day with some serious competition, congratulations to everyone who competed.

VetPlus celebrated 10 years of supporting breast cancer awareness month in October. Over the 10 years we have raised over $30,000 for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation!
The number one cancer diagnosed in women in New Zealand, we fundraised all month, went ‘Pink For A Day’ in all clinics, sold raffles and pink merchandise. The Reporoa crew organised ‘Reporoa Pink Walk’, sold cupcakes and T Shirts and had a record number of walkers.
With all the other fundraising over the month we raised $5700 and VetPlus had kindly topped this up so we can hand over $6300!!
All money will be given to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation to be used to promote awareness and education, support and research.

Vet Nurse Awareness Week was last week and it was time for us to express our gratitude and say 'thank you' to our wonderful nurses.

We reflected on the critical roles that vet nurses play. They have a wide range of responsibilities, from assisting in surgeries to monitoring anaesthesia, administering medications, and providing essential comfort to anxious or injured animals. Vet nurses are also responsible for educating pet owners on proper animal care, nutrition, and preventive healthcare measures.

Our nurses here at VetPlus are the absolute BEST! We love and appreciate you all!

We are celebrating 10 years of supporting the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year we 'GO PINK FOR A DAY' and put on the Reporoa Pink Ribbon Walk, Over the 10 years we have donated more than $30,000 to the foundation!
Tuesday the 15th of October is our day but we are once again selling 'PINK' merchandise and have a raffle in each of our clinics all month - be in to win a $150 spa voucher!

Poor Baldrick, he got in a bit of bother last night whilst sniffing around doing some 'gardening'! He got a stick stuck where sticks really shouldn't go - Veterinarian Emma had to sedate Baldrick to remove it OUCH!
Baldrick is a lot happier now that it has been removed!
