Meet Sam, our incredible Te Puna Lead Nurse! 👩‍⚕️
“I was always the kid bringing home stray and injured animals and nursing them back to health. So deciding to become a veterinary nurse was a very easy decision for me. I started my career working and studying in a mixed animal practice where I learnt the ins and outs of the field and gained the majority of my large animal knowledge.
After moving to Australia, I worked in a Small Animal Hospital where I was fortunate enough to work alongside some amazing veterinarian that gave me the opportunity to broaden my small animal nursing skills further. I've now been working in the industry for around 15 years and still to this day I love what I do. No two days are the same which keeps the job exciting but being able to make a difference in our sick and injured patients is why I do it. I'm very much a crazy cat lady at heart and have 2 fur babies of my own. When not at work I like to enjoy the outdoors and spending quality time with the family.”

We recently celebrated our milestone of 50 patients treated for hyperthyroidism with Radioactive Iodine Treatment! Our very first patient we treated was lovely Mr Dexter, back in late 2022. We spoke to Dexter’s mum to see how he has been since having his treatment with our vets Melani and Kate. She reports, “Dexter is doing really well! He’s an outside cat by day and is often seen snoozing in the sunniest spots of the yard. He loves his food (sometimes a little too much) so is never far away at breakfast and dinner time. Our 5 year old enjoys feeding him to sneak in some extra cuddles. He’s 13 now so is showing some grumpy old man tendencies but that doesn’t stop the kids from trying to win his affection any chance they get. He’s much more relaxed with the adults of the house, snuggling up on the couch with me in the evenings and on my bed at night. Dexter is a well loved part of our family.” 🐱❤️

Meet Koro! Koro visited our Papamoa clinic after becoming unwell. Following a night of observations, Koro was admitted for an exploratory surgery of his gut, which revealed a foreign object we believed to be a stuck corn cobb! After having the mystery item removed from his gut, Koro has a made a full recovery and is doing a-maize-ing! 🌽 Happy Koro and happy owners!

Bean’s Story 🐱
Lovely little 1 year old Bean presented at the Tauranga clinic after already spending the night at after hours care. Her owners came home the previous evening to find her off balance and walking in circles. Bean’s symptoms got progressively worse to the point where she couldn’t move and see at all. Bean was kept in hospital and treated supportively with anti-inflammatories, intravenous fluids, antibiotics and anti-nausea medication. Our lovely nurse Olivia spent a lot of time supporting Bean and giving her many cuddles. After a few days in hospital care and a couple days rest at home, she was back to jumping up on the couch and bed and moving around comfortably, although a bit wobbly! Bean progressed in leaps and bounds from there and made a full recovery! 💛

My name is Melani - nice to "meet" you!
I am a small animal veterinarian, striving to offer every patient Best Care, which I have had the privilege of doing for the past 15 years. I qualified in South Africa, where I had my own clinic and used to work with all animals, from chameleons to elephants, but have been loving practicing here in New Zealand for the last 5 years. With a keen interest in feline care, I recently completed a 2-year course that allowed me to sit an examination to attain a General Practitioner certificate in Feline Practice. In addition to my love for our feline friends, I also have a special interest in oncology and chemotherapy - I have been privileged to work with several patients over the last two years, its just remarkable how well they respond, allowing even more happy memories to be made with their families. Please come say hello whenever you are around - it will be lovely to meet you! 🐾❤

Meet little Joan 💕
11 week old Joan was seen last month by our Katikati team when she became unwell, off her food and developed a very high temperature. After a night in the hospital with us and some fluid therapy, she was feeling better and back to her happy self. Whilst she may only weigh a wee 940 grams, she is one strong little trooper!
