This day 11 years ago I was whelping a litter of ridgie babies....Shani / Brian / Luther & Nala. Shani has always been the sweetest dog and such a good girl and Brian sounds like he is just the same, he was as a baby for sure. I still remember the day hos Mum picked him up.

Today I am thrilled to see Shani & Brian celebrated their 11th birthday...it warms your heart to have good longevity in your lines.

Happy birthday and huge hugs to you all.πŸ₯³πŸ’•

Rhodesian Ridgeback Association are having a fundraiser guys and these beds are awesome so get your ticket. Only $10 bucks each or 3 for $25 delivered.

PM Destiny directly if your keep to make your RR the happiest RR on the planet, and get them off your bed πŸ˜… That would apply to some ddb owners out there also.

Who remembers little Jed the pup who had his leg injured as a baby we suspect in the whelping box by Mum? Do you remember also that there was talk that he may loose that leg in the future if it starts bothering him so we gave him to a special home?

Well no way Jed is not having that.I got an update from his Mumma and he is doing great, passed his latest leg check with flying colours and is living life to the fullest. We are so thrilled for him.
His Mum also sent me an updated pic of him chilling on the couch 😍 he sure looks like his Mum Dotty.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Union

So I have had a couple of people email me wanting to know about this new club that has started for the RR so I wanted to give my perspective and what I think about them. Bare with me this could take a bit of time 🀣

The RRU has been started by a handful of breeders who don't really interact with the longterm breeders in NZ.The majority of these breeders being involved with the Rhodesian Ridgeback Association.Who I may add is the only RR breed club recognised by DogsNZ the RRU is not.

This new club has come about since a member of the RRU and the RRA put in submissions for a breed LRL ( basically this was health tests they felt should be mandatory for the breed here in NZ and that should be done on all parents of registered pups before being bred from.) This did not pass as majority of breeders, and pet owners as they had the opportunity to vote on this also, already do the appropriate tests so therefore did not vote for many of the health conditions put forward as they did not feel they needed to be forced to do this as they already do the testing they feel neccessary for their lines. Also some of the conditions put forward only effect certain lines within NZ. Plus the Rhodesian Ridgeback would be one of the healthiest breeds in the dog world, which I'm sure many of you can attest to, so it seemed breeders would be putting their dogs through unnessary testing, particularly hip & elbow scoring as it is fone under anaestetic and environmental factors are known to play a big part in these conditions.

I will also add that several submissions for other breeds have been put forward to DogsNZ and owners and breeders have not voted to pass those either.

The RRU state " If you are thinking about getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy ensure it and its parents have had all the necessary health tests as recommended by the NZ Kennel Club (Dogs NZ) by only talking to a RRU endorsed breeder." There are no health tests recommended for the RR by DogNZ as they did not pass. All that is required is that pups be miccrochipped when registering them. Firstly I feel this is a play on words by them as one of the members on the RRU is also has a position on the health & welfare sub committee with dogsNZ. Secondly how does someone being a breeder member of a club make them a good breeder to endorse? Maybe they are being mentored by a longtime breeder! Breeding is more than just putting two dogs together. From my understanding one of the breeders they appear to endorse has only had one litter here out of a registered dog who was there pet. Also majority of their breeder members they do not deal with the longterm breeders of the RR so how can they know about what they do as far as recommending them or not goes? Unless of course they believe gossip they may hear.

In my opinion longterm breeders know genetics and they know lines that have been around for years so therefore know the majority of health conditions behind them. So, in my thinking, why would you not go with a longtime breeder as they are the ones who have been truly dedicated to the ridgie breed, in some cases for over 30 plus years, first? Why would you take the recommendation from people that haven't? When I asked the RRU how they could recommend good and bad breeders, to them, remembering personal feelings, winning & loosing in the show ring egos can also come into play when people do this I did not get any answer.

While yes health is something to consider when looking at breeding so I believe is temperament and yet when I asked the RRU stance on this I got put on suspension from there page for asking as i had not ageed to their rules for posting was there explanation so I can only assume they were trying to avoid the question as they had answered a previous post i had answered on.

End of the day guys all the heath testing under the sun will not stop a problem it will lessen the chance of you having one. When it comes to genetics nobody breeds a litter with the intention of causing health issue for any of the pups that come from any breeding nor do they have a crystal ball but stuff can happen and to me it's how you deal with the problems more than having pieces of paper saying well the parents were clear of this and that, but when you consider the generations within that mating and potential off spring all those dogs have created the parents are minimal in effecting health as there are several players so to say in the game.

Dogs are no different than your own genetics.A condition another sibling or family member has or has had may or may not effect you.

My recommendation is go with a breeder you connect with that will be available to you. Make sure you have a signed contract so there can be no confusion as to what both parties expect or will do if there is or isnt a problem. A breeder that does puppy culture principle will give pup more longterm temperament and confidents wise than one that just has them around the family, particularly with an aloof breed like the RR, as they will adapt quicker with people and scarey and different situations to them.

Hope this has given RR peeps a little clarification. Have an awesome Christmas guys and don't forget to send me your pooch pics it would make my Christmas.
