Race 5 Sir Patrick Hogan Karapiro Classic $350k

Our Time 🥈(Rory Hutchings)

A huge run by this highly talented gelding, been beaten 0.3 lengths to finish second. Settling back further than normal he put up a brave effort to chase down the talented winner. He’s definitely looking for a lot further than the 1600m but the future looks extremely promising for Our Time who has now had 4 starts for 2 seconds and a win.

Super proud of all our small team to pick up a feature placing. 🙌🏼

Fun fact for the day 🧙

Did you know that horses breathe about 10 times a minute at rest? But once they hit the gallop, they can take up to 140 breaths per minute! That's a whopping 15 litres of air with each breath!

Quiet week on the racing front this week, but we’ll have a few heading to the trials at Matamata next Tuesday along with races at Te Rapa next Thursday and a trip to Wellington next Friday/Saturday with a small team.

Looking forward to getting the horses to the trials to kick off new preparations and some quality racing at Wellington.

If you have visited the stables, you’ve met Pencil ✏️

Pencil would be about 18 now maybe older, he’s quite the character and very much well loved by all members of the team here including the horses. The horses go around Pencil as he lays in the middle of the walk ways 🙈

We are excited to announce 📣

In addition to our stable in Te Aroha. We are setting up a satellite stable on course at Palmerston North in March 2025.

Palmerston North racecourse itself is currently undergoing track reconstruction, which looks like to be completed in March for a Raceday return, it’s looking pretty good which is exciting to see, it is also complimented by a synthetic track for winter racing, along with it being another option for trackwork.

Based on track, we have a brand new 12 horse barn, safe spacious boxes, day yards, walker, a straight swimming pool and a water treadmill.

With all our recent success down in the central districts, this will complement our Te Aroha stable well, keeping travelling costs down for owners. We have our own transport for our horses in Te Aroha and will also have our own transport for our horses in Palmerston North.

We will have access to private farms for farm rides and schooling of horses, a short trip to beaches and arenas for various types of work for the horses.

This barn will be run by Casey with attention to detail paramount.

We will be holding open days at both of our stables in the coming months, so keep your eyes peeled for dates. We will have some horses to showcase that are available to lease to race, along with a BBQ, drinks and tour around the grounds.

If you have a horse who you think might be suited to the central districts area and wanting to change up their work with variety then please don’t hesitate to call Peter or Casey for more details.

A quiet weekend on the racing front after a very busy Christmas and New Year period.

We will have a fair few horses kicking off their new campaigns over the next week or so, with a team heading to Te Rapa, Wellington, Whanganui and Waverley.

Vadamos Filly 👀

A successful day at Ellerslie yesterday with a Vadamos 3yo Filly (Real Class) taking out the group 3 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes over 2000m.

We have a small amount of shares remaining in this gorgeous yearling Filly by Vadamos out of Greyvee, she was a winner over 1200m along with 3 seconds over and a further 5 top 5 finishes from 13 starts.

Her pedigree is full of stakes and group winners, her dam Greyvee being a half sister to Sacred Rhythm who won the oaks prelude, she is also closely related to Bella Martini who won the Gosford Guineas and second in the Let’s Elope Group 2.

She will head to the breakers in February and then have a preparation at our stables to get to know our routine.

She was purchased at the Karaka Weanling sales for $1k plus gst. Which is no reflection on the quality type she is.

We say goodbye to a successful 2024 and we cannot wait for 2025 to begin.

We end 2024 with a training milestone of 400 winners, we round off the year with 13 winners with a strike rate of 4 from our small stable.

I would like to thank everyone involved with Lock Racing we couldn’t have done it without you all. To my wonderful clients and staff, we’ve had a great season, we have some quality horses in the stable and the best is yet to come - Bring it on 🙏🏼

The countdown to 500 is on 🙌🏼

Huge effort to come from well back first up over the 1600m. He will improve immensely with the outing, but very encouraging run by the 8yo who is on a path towards a jumping campaign.

Fabulous win by promising mare

A weekend stable double on Sunday at Wanganui saw Fabulous Gal and Leah Hemi take out the sixth race on the card the Shane Stone Builders 65 1600, winning comfortably by 2.3 lengths with her ears pricked. Leah was full of praise for the mare, but also stated she is still so very green and raw.

A mare having her first preparation with us had shown huge ability but also had faced a few niggly issues, she was very disappointing last start after two top runs in, we got her scoped and found she had mucus and a tail end of a virus. We opted to send her to the water walker to Robyn and Russell Rodger’s who do a wonderful job, she returned in top order which set us up nicely for today. She trialled exceptionally well at Counties, so we were pretty confident today she’d run a nice race.

A mare who I think will get out over a staying trip and will appreciate a bit of moisture, well space her runs and keep her nice and fresh, that seems to be how she likes her campaigns to be. She’s a big mare who we’ve got to manage but with swimming and the treadmill we keep on top of her little niggles well.

Good stayers always run well fresh and we think a fair bit of this mare, we are thankful for the owners who have had to be patient with her, it’s a frustrating game when things don’t go to plan, but we do the right thing in the beginning then we eliminate problems long term so I think we are now back on track to hopefully a great preparation ahead.

That’s now her second win from 14 starts with a further 6 top 4 placings to her name, we will take her through the grades now and hopefully aim for some nice mares races.

Race Results Wanganui Sunday 29th December Race 6 Shane Stone Builders 75 1340 🥇 Fabulous Gal (Leah Hemi) Impressive effort by Fabulous Gal today over the shorter trip of 1340m, a mare that will appreciate further and moisture she showed her class today. Aided by a great ride by Leah, she drew clear winning by 2.3 Lengths. Congratulations to her ownership group, we’ve all be rewarded by patience and I think we will have alot of fun with her. Another huge congratulations to my team of staff, another double for us all to celebrate during the week.

Race Results Wanganui Sunday 29th December Race 5 Whanganui/Taranaki Racehorse Breeders Association 75 1200 🥇 Miss Balvenie (Kate Hercock) Smart win by this tough little mare, so well deserved to see her pick up a win back in NZ, aided by a super ride by Kate she just sat back and got her to relax and find the line in an impressive time. She will win plenty more races. Congratulations to her wonderful ownership group, so thrilled to be able to get her back happy and winning, Massive shout out to the team at home, you are all doing a fantastic job and the horses are all racing well because of it,

Fabulous Gal, Miss Balvenie and Shez Shamus have all settled in at Wanganui in preparation for racing tomorrow. They all have travelled down well, straight into their hay and feed. Happy horses 🐴
