Peter Lock Racing was established over 30 years ago and is now based under the picturesque Te Aroha mountain on the Te Aroha Racecourse.
We had one trial today at the Cambridge Synthetic.
Vittorio Veneto (Maria Sanson) winning his heat really nicely over the 970m.
He does all his work on the treadmill, which is a huge asset to the stables in winter months.
He’s a horse with a lot of ability but likes to do a lot wrong, we look forward to him stepping out to the races in the next few weeks.

JAZZ WITH DRAGON (Ngakau Hailey 3kg)
Dropping right back in distance from 1400m, question mark on whether he will keep up over the 970m, but he’s been kept fresh since his trial placing and has been working well. Has had two trials on the synthetic for a win and a placing.

Race 7 - Shez Shamus 4th
Ran home strongly over 1200m to finish 4th, was a huge run by her to finish off the way she did over an unsuitable 1200m, but without a trial she was kept fresh and showed she still wanted to be out there today. Looking forward to seeing her step out over further next time.

Another who flew home to run 2nd, he was first up since October last year, he’s a very happy horse and we really look forward to this preparation with him. He’s a very handy jumper which we could see this preparation also.

We have 3 runners today on our home track, where the track is going to be a very testing heavy 8 track.
Race 4 NAVY BLUE (Courtney Barnes)
Has been disappointing in prior trials before running a nice 2nd here in a trial on his home track over 1200m on a heavy track. We have changed his gear around, gets conditions to suit so hoping this will help him improve further now on raceday.
Race 6 RESERVED (Sam Spratt)
Went a really nice race first start to the races on the synthetic placing 3rd. Never been on a heavy surface before so unsure whether he will get through the ground or not. But has been working well since his last start.
Race 10 PIERRO’S DREAM (Courtney Barnes)
Had excuses first start to the races in January on a firm track. He has spelled and resumed with nice enough trial over 1150 at Waipa on soft 7, has had another jumpout since and went well. Another who now needs to step up on raceday, but gets conditions to suit.

We took four horses over to Waipa trials today where we faced a heavy 10 track.

Sonofabutcher, Princess Jasmine and first timer Pierro’s Dream in action in the pool this morning. They thoroughly enjoyed their morning at Matamata.
Sporting the new Canter for Cancer halters, we have ours in our stable colours Blue, Red and Green.
They are on special now so grab yourself a bargain!

Surprisingly she is a full sister to Badgeringdawitness, definitely have the same stature but not the same colouring.

Race 3 - Reserved (3 G Spirit of Boom X Pinolino) 🥉
Nice debut run by Reserved to run into third placing, ridden by Sam Spratt he was slow away and on the back foot from the get go, then got held up before the corner, to run on to finish 3rd was a really good effort over the 1300m. He will be a horse to continue to follow once he steps out over further going forward.
Successful morning at the Cambridge Jumping Trials with Sonofabutcher winning his heat impressively with Hamish McNeil in the saddle.
This was Butchers first hurdle trial, so it looks like we have a handy jumper on our hands for the up coming winter.

On and off the treadmill with Snow and on his own with success. First time walking and trotting on the treadmill too which he handled pretty well.
We know this is a long way off going on the truck but we are hoping this could make some difference 🤞🏻
Here we have a horse that has had issues going on the truck, he’s had a bad experience before we got him and majority of the time he’s had to be sedated to travel.
Unfortunately we can’t sedate to travel if we need to trial or race. So here is where the treadmill plays another great part of the stable. Horses that have trucking, floating or barrier issues have all come right after being on the treadmill. So here’s hoping this will work with this boy too.
He wouldn’t go near the truck ramp door, nor this ramp to the treadmill, but after the help of Snow and some time, we got him walking up and on over 5 times without hesitation, which gave him a good experience.
He will continue to this every second day so we don’t over do things with him - so will get a video when we have another set of hands of the clever boy walking happily up and down the ramp and on his own.

A couple of nice winners as we head into the winter season.
Debit (3yo F Darci Brahma X Cracker) made a real impression scoring at her second start to the races after a nice 3rd on debut.
Revelling in the heavy track conditions at Matamata on the 7th of June, she put a 4.5 length margin on the field with Courtney Barnes in the saddle.
She is a lovely filly, we bred her ourselves, myself, Rod Conning and Trevor Sargent with breeding not really in our interests Cracker now is residing at Highview Stud.
Debit looks to have a bright future over the coming winter months.
Badgeringdawitness (5yo G Reliable Man X Ebony and Ivory) dug deep to score in the last race at Awapuni in the 17th June. Ridden by Lemmy Douglas, the claim used well into advantage on these testing conditions was the telling factor over the concluding stages, he’s a horse with a fair bit of ability who we won’t see the best of until he steps out over 1600m and beyond, he was off the nickel from the 800, but his quality prevailed getting him over the line first. There will be plenty more wins install for this galloper.
Great to get these wins on the board after some frustrating efforts over the past few months, especially for our patient owners and the staff at home who put a lot of time and effort making these results happen.

Jazz with Dragon looking bright while enjoying his grass.. Formerly in Hong Kong, Jazz enjoys his time outside in the paddock now. Fingers crossed he will be heading back to the races this week if the tracks dry up. He hasn’t raced since finishing a nice second over 1400m at New Plymouth.
