A leash is the most under used tool in dog training. It is also the most incorrectly used tool.
It is so simple.
It is so effective.
In fact it's the one thing I would never be without.
So why are so many people opposed to using it?
Probably because using a leash to its best effect, like everything else, requires a bit of skill and practice.
I wasn't born with leash skills just like my dog wasn't born with leash skills.
99% of dogs do not have good enough obedience to be walked without one.
Here's an example:
A client of mine recently took her dog to the beach. She also had her baby in the pram.
Someone had an out of control dog who rushed up to them and panicked their dog who was on a leash. This then made the pram fall over WITH THE BABY IN IT.
C'mon people. Please keep your dog with you. Your dog has no right to approach anyone else.
Don't ruin someone else's day because your untrained dog is not wearing a leash.
This incident will be reported to council. And you know, soon all of us dog owners will lose beach access because there are some people who have no respect or consideration for others.
Please leash or train your dog especially if you want to keep enjoying the privileges we have!
