West Plains Rescue Cat and kitten rescue in Invercargill, NZ. Registered charity. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cats and kittens from around Invercargill.

Every cat in our care is desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before being adopted. We are able to work with neonatal kittens, can facilitate colony control, and TNR (trap neuter release). We are working on long term solutions to the stray cat population in Southland. Being a small organisation so we cannot take in large volumes of cats and kittens but we can offer advice, loan traps or equipment

to those in need and liaise with other rescue groups and organisations. Donations can be made to:

If you live anywhere near the area open up your garages and sheds in case he is locked inside, even if you live blocks away.

Oliver is not desexed or microchipped so likely he is wandering given cats are coming into season. Important he is found fast so this can be done.

Our first momma and kittens of the 2024/2025 kitten season.

This is Shadow and her two babies, Shedo and Yoru (Shade and Night) born 16 September. She had 5 kittens, however 3 passed away.

Shadow is a temporary surrender so we can care for her and the kittens during this vulnerable time. Once they're old enough, they'll all be desexed and Shadow will go back to her owner while the kittens will be rehomed.

The dynamic duo went off to their new new home last weekend and they've made themselves right at home. We are so excited they've been adopted together again as their bond is a special one.

Thank you to the family who opened their hearts and homes to the boys. We know their original family are very glad to hear they've been adopted together.

We awarded over 40 desexing subsidies in the last few months. What started as a positive campaign is ending up as a disheartening and frustrating experience.

This campaign was designed to help people who couldn't afford to desex their cats. We constantly hear, "I can't afford to desex my cat" so we decided to help out. And when we advertised the desexing subsidies we had nearly 80 applications come in.

Sadly, it turns out a lot of people just don't want to desex their cat! Even with the offer of a subsidy we've had people say to us:

"She's pregnant now so I'm not doing it"
"We want her to have kittens"
"Can't you just do it for free?"
"I have other priorities right now"
"It's too hard and I don't really care enough"
"it's fine, I'll just give the kittens away"

And today, we've literally had someone say our offer was "too little, too late".

We are still offering to desex those cats that have become pregnant for NO EXTRA COST. In response, we are being made to feel like it is our fault, like we are responsible for their cat getting pregnant.

We've sent numerous emails to people telling them they received a subsidy, following up, chasing payments, etc. Some people haven't bothered to reply at all, some haven't shown up to appointments.

We are trying so hard to help the community. What are we doing wrong? What are we missing?

FARM HOME NEEDED: Fred and Torty

We've been working with Torty heaps and she's learned humans aren't that scary after all. She loves creature comforts like a cosy bed she can bury herself in and is happy to be patted when she's comfortable.

Fred is still very grumpy and scared of people. We have decided to stop forcing interactions on him other than supplying the odd treat and he is very content with this arrangement ๐Ÿ˜…

Fred and Torty came from the same colony and they get along well, sometimes curling up together. We are confident they would be a good pair to go to a rural home together.

Torty is the size of a big kitten and we doubt she will grow much bigger. Fred is an average sized male and seems to be fully grown.

I cannot tell you how frustrating it is when months earlier we could have taken in the kittens, tamed them and have had them rehomed already. Instead, we are expected to take in wild adolescent kittens when we are at the peek of kitten season and completely full with other rescues.

If you have a cat that is not desexed - get it done now before summer so your cat is not adding to the thousands of kittens we have to rescue every year. If you need help getting your cat desexed, message us. If your cat is pregnant, message us.

I often get asked how I got into cat rescue, so here's our story. It all begins with a butterfly and a ginger ball of fluff... On 11 December 2018, I was looking out over our yard when a tiny fluffy ginger kitten zoomed across the grass chasing a butterfly. I couldn't believe it. I was excited but it quickly turned to worry as I didn't know what to do. I tried to grab the kitten but it was too fast. I got some photos, set up a giant cardboard box shelter in the garden and waited. A few days later, the same kitten got stuck climbing a fence so grabbed the little hissy-spittle and brought him inside. ๐‘†๐‘–๐‘š๐‘๐‘Ž ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘’ ๐‘˜๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘›. We ended up putting him back in the yard as it was clear he was too young to be away from his mother. We set up a shelter and fed them on our deck until a few weeks later when we were able to trap the mother. We then captured all four kittens and fostered them in a rabbit hutch. They were about 7-8 weeks old and not friendly! The runt was very sick with a severe chest infection but managed to pull through with the help of the vets. He became my best friend and 6 years on I cannot imagine life without Grizzly Bear. At the time, there were only two rescues in town. All one could do was "euthanise them for free" because they were wild and the other was too overwhelmed to be able to help. I remember feeling angry but I decided to just do it myself, rounded up the money and had all the kittens desexed and vaccinated. Aaliyah would love to go to a home where she is the only cat and will be treated like the tortoiseshell royalty she is! Aaliyah does not enjoy being at the rescue cattery because there are just too many other cats. She is playful in her own way and I think once she has settled into a home her full personality will come out. Aaliyah is ready to go to a home, she is desexed vaccinated and microchipped. Oscar is still looking for his new home. His foster gave us an update: Some days he comes out for lots of pats and will make himself comfortable in front of the fire and have a snooze. Other days he isnโ€™t too keen to come out to say hello. He does enjoy lots of pats and attention when itโ€™s given. Heโ€™s definitely going to need some patience but he will get there.
