While you will still see these sorts of atrocious displays in Washington, at least the state has banned octopus farming from taking place off the coastline.
HB 1153 passed the Senate with a 29-20 vote, and it passed the House 70-27. On March 13, 2024, the governor signed the bill into law. The bill banned octopus farming by excluding octopus from the definition of "private sector cultured aquatic products" and explicitly states that “a person may not participate in octopus aquaculture in Washington.”

Today I saw a crayfish in am overcrowded tank being attacked by another, they have been in there too long and they are stressing out and becoming aggressive! This is bad torture of sentient animals and needs to be, as soon as possible a thing of the past!
I have reported this restaurant time again to both SPCA and to MPI. SPCA says the laws are not enforceable and they are also out of date now we know that crayfish feel as much as we do and suffer terrible pain when they are cooked alive!

One day this sort of suffering will seem very barbaric! As long as we torture non- human animals we will also be capable of torturing human animals! Gandhi was right of course! How animals are treated is the true judge of a nation! Also if there is an economic demand for these beautiful and sensitive creatures, it doesn't mean that it is ethical to exploit them so cruelly! These 4 Kōura have been in this small tank for over 3 months. We need to lobby the government to change the slaughter code for these decapod crustaceans!

Kia ora koutou a participant in this Page wanting to stop crayfish, kōura tanks in restaurants reported that in Queenstown right now there are tanks which are extremely overcrowded and totally exploitative of our fellow animals!
She also saw an incident where crayfish fell out of the back of a truck onto the a main road and then were shoved back into the truck!
Total chaos and lack of training of staff which breaks the welfare code for animals in captivity. This is an inhumane industry!
Thank you to this person for their caring for other species!

Kia ora koutou katoa during lock downs I witnessed at the restaurant in central city have fewer customers so the crayfish spend a long time in overcrowded tanks! The crayfish is a solitary animal who is very sensitive because of its multiple ganglia!
Today I saw a crayfish held captive and searching with its antennae for a way out of the tank, feeling along the top of the roof of the tank to find some way out!
Please sign my petition and ensure that in the future no other crayfish will endure this egregious torture!
