Keep your dogs, horses and alpacas safe - and if you think one of them has gotten into something nasty, get in touch.

🐄🐑 This and season, remember to keep dogs, horses, llamas and alpacas away from calf/lamb meal and milk replacer!

Ionophores (such as monensin) are used in calf/lamb meal and milk replacers to prevent diseases like coccidiosis. But they can be fatal for dogs 🐕, horses 🐎 and camelids🦙.

🐶 Many dogs love the taste of calf and lamb milk replacer and will jump at the chance to lick the containers or equipment! Make sure you keep your feeds away from susceptible animals so they won't be tempted.

⚠️ You may not see the signs of ionophore toxicity straight away, as it affects the heart and skeletal muscle. Symptoms may include muscle weakness, staggering, loss of appetite or difficulty breathing - but don't wait until these signs appear.

If you think your dog, horse, llama or alpaca has gotten into a product containing ionophores, contact your vet immediately.

The use of cow monitoring technology in heat detection and rumination changes, has become commonplace on many dairy farms around New Zealand, but how about its use for detecting mastitis and reducing the financial impact of one of the most prevalent health issues in the New Zealand dairy herd?

This article, written by Vetlife’s Caroline Reid looks into how we can use monitoring data to assist with this issue.

If you are interested in looking at your cow monitoring data in more depth, please speak to your veterinarian about our Cowsmart program. is another great resource for discussion around animal monitoring data.

Protecting our herds, staff, and families from the numerous diseases vertebrate animals can transmit to humans is crucial. Prevention includes vaccinating livestock against common illnesses like Salmonella, Rotavirus, Leptospirosis, and Campylobacter. Regular hand washing and avoiding food and drink around animals also play a key role.

Meet Bounce 🐾
Bounce was on a recent hunting trip when he received a kick from a deer.

Bounce's owner brought him into where he was initially given pain relief but later he started feeling unwell, stopped eating and had a high fever, along with other presenting issues.

After two days in hospital, several ultrasounds that showed fluid in his belly, more bloodwork, fluid analysis and further consultations with vets from and , the decision was made to do explorative surgery on Bounce's abdomen.

In surgery, it was discovered that he had two holes in his small intestine and was leaking bile and intestinal bacteria into his abdomen.

With another three days of care and regular medication, Bounce headed home where his owner took care of his needs round the clock, and after a couple of weeks, he was back to his normal self, eating and bouncing around! 🐾
