A window to our Wednesdays here at Canine Retreat. 🍃🐾

I am seeing a growing trend of dogs being rejected from daycare for crazy reasons. I hear of them through others I know in the industry who will take dogs deemed unsuitable by other services. The strange this to us is that these dogs, way more often than not, are normal dogs that dont have an issue in our services. They are dogs that given the chance thrive in a daycare setting and become solid and positive contributions to their daycare packs.

This video shows the reality of daycare and socialisation services in the sense that working dogs always comes back to one thing, management. Most dog training is... management. Dogs dont have the capacity to understand our human values and wants and needs of them. Its upto us to teach them what our expectations are and what behaviour is or isn't acceptable in our services. (This is true in the day to day lives of dogs as well and all that they do)

Putting dogs together and just expecting them to work it out will always end the same way, badly. We need to step up to our responsibility to them and we need to lead them. To shepherd them. To protect them... often from themselves and their own desires. When a shepherd gaurds, or a collie herds and nips, or a bull breed fights, its not the dogs failing, its us. Its js failing to accept our place and failing to honor the dogs we created to do exactly these things. 💥

Sarge's first day. 🌟

Every introduction is easier than the last. With every new dog it gets easier and the process of introduction becomes simpler. This may sound strange but when the principles you train by and the methods you use are based around understanding the dog first it becomes the natural progression of a service like ours.

It doesnt matter if the new dog is over excited or nervous or shy or pushy or 'reactive' or whatever they might be. Its about the dogs who are already here. Its about the environment you've already created and the understanding between you and the pack about what the expectations are.

Sarge is a confident and excited kind of dog. He wasnt phased by meeting 20 new dogs. He wasnt phased being in a new environment. I can tell he has a good relationship with his people and understands to follow the lead of people. In no time at all he was going from 0 - 100 in attempts to initiate play and he wasnt shy about it. Because the other dogs understand the rules and understand they need to give him time to settle in this wasnt an issue for us or the dogs. If our boundaries with the pack weren't clear this kind of behaviour wouldn't go down well even though Sarge had nothing but good intentions. Given time and guidance he will learn to initiate interaction in a way that means the others will be willing to reciprocate and I have a feeling he will become a fast favorite to many of the higher energy Tuesday dogs who love the full on rough house style of play.

I often hear of dogs who get removed from other daycares because they play too hard or they are too excitable or they dont take direction... the list goes on... but to me, this is the core of the work we do here at Canine Retreat. We cannot expect dogs to understand rules or boundaries we havent taken the time to teach them. We cannot expect the dog to be responsible for their actions in environments we as people create. Dogs will be dogs and if we dont take the time to teach them and lead them we cannot expect them to understand. Dogs dont have agency or a choice in their place in our human world. In my opinion people who dont understand that are probably in the wrong industry.
