There’s been a lot of OTTB talk lately — often focused on what’s wrong with them. But here’s my big question:
Where’s the support for the people doing the retraining and rehoming work?

We’re putting in the hours — vetting, assessing, riding, viewings, educating new owners — often unpaid and unnoticed.

❤️‍🩹 Yet the negative noise around OTTBs, especially about their bodies, seems louder than ever.

👎 Don’t believe everything you read on a sunday scroll with a TB care tag.

Let’s be clear: NZ thoroughbreds are not the same as overseas ones. Many are raised in open paddocks, farm-trained, and Schooled. Some are unraced and untrained — yet all are lumped together under one label online.

I’m proud of the strides Jump Start is making , and we’re seeing great results from that. But we need more recognition for the people doing the hard yards and more positive attention on this breed.

OTTBs aren’t buggered. They’re versatile, competitive, and worth the effort.

Yes, some come with wear and tear — just like any athlete. And it doesn’t mean we as retrainers aren’t making the absolute best decisions for their new lives with honesty and care.
