The photograph titled "After the Rain" comes from the same location in Milford as my earlier image, "Across the River", but captures the scene from a different angle.

Instead of focusing solely on the Lancewood trees, this shot pulls back to reveal the broader environment, highlighting the interplay between light, shadow, and the lush greenery.

The persistent drizzle had left everything glistening, and in post-processing, I chose to enhance that mood by editing the image to resemble an oil painting. The softened edges and rich, textured colours evoke the feeling of standing there.

The Road to Milford, NZ. - Across the River -

Despite the relentless rain and the absence of that perfect light we photographers often chase, a good friend and I set out to scout new photography locations. The weather wasn't on our side, (or was it), but that didn't dampen our spirits.

After pulling off the road, we ducked beneath a bridge, seeking refuge from the downpour. There, we stumbled upon a narrow track—more a gap between moss-covered trees than a path. The atmosphere was damp and heavy with winter’s watery sound, the kind of scene that only reveals its beauty when you're forced to slow down.

As we ventured down this hidden path, my attention was drawn to a pair of stunning Lancewood trees, their spiky leaves standing out in the misty surroundings. Ironically, instead of taking in the whole scene, I found myself fixated on these two saplings, captivated by their stark elegance. Even in the midst of rain and gloom, these trees reminded me why Lancewoods are my favourite—there’s something about their resilience and unique form that never fails to draw my eye, even when the world around them seems less than ideal.

Not epic I know but Rhiannon Moss took a hand-held photo of me failing to get the drone to take off as it had a magnetic meltdown last Saturday night. What blows me away is that she wasn't even facing south and still had the lovely colour.

Phew! That was a looooong drive! With some pretty wild weather in places 😳
The Birdies are very grateful to have made it to their lovely accommodations(big thanks to the awesome Robbie Greenslade).
They’re all tucked up in bed & looking forward to an epic first day at HOY tomorrow!
