Bandit and Bonita were off on adventures today to the BRANZ children's Christmas party. What my friends talk me into doing!

Bandit was in charge of patting and brushing and Bonita the pony rides. Bandit was very happy to be out and about again at his old age and had a spring in his step.

Thanks to my lovely helpers for their young walking legs today.

Tomorrow, Bonita is off on another adventure at a CTR with Harlow. Busy pony this one.

Welcome to the world Peggy ❤️

I'm proud to introduce our new filly foal
Rainbow Valley Delightful Lady. She is exactly what I ordered! A big thank you to Barbara Bilski and to all of my friends who made this possible, while I was out of action.

This special wee girl is named after my Grandma 'Peggy' (Margaret) and of course one of NZs best racing mares of all time. I grew up with a framed picture of Delightful Lady hanging up in the lounge.

Peggy is out of Madison Park Sweetheart (imp AUS) by the lovely Fortification Atomic, who has the old Kuriheka lines of my childhood pony Glenmoor Little Gem.

The old saying, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Meet Bandit, 19 years old, no lameness issues, great beginners pony. Does have cushings but unmedicated. I thought to myself, let's get him for the riding school, blood test him, and put him on meds. Easy, I can do that! Right? So I called Tony Shaw and made a plan. He is used to my plotting and scheming! He was cheap enough 😆

So he turns up... dad saw him and said:
What is that thing? Who owns it? I hope it was free.

Day One. Bandit got a warm wash and a partial clip. He was too ribby for a full clip, and with no reserves, we kept him with his funky haircut. That night, I asked Brendan to come and trim him as all his hooves were different lengths.

Day two.
Brendan came and took a considerable amount of hoof off. He pretty much asked the same questions that dad did.

The goal was to put weight on him but with very limited grass as we now suspected laminitis. He had lots of brushes and a boring diet with low sugar and starch.

Week 3.
Dental day. Lovely Rachel from Vets on Riverbank came to do his dentals, bloods, and podiatry x-rays. The good news was he has normal old man teeth, just sharp edges and a few points on the back of his teeth, most probably from only being done with hand tools. Easy fix!

The not so good news. He has chronic laminitis and little boney changes at the end of his pedal bones. The vets comment was that she would measure the x-rays at the vet clinic, and he doesn't have to be put down just yet. Thankfully, Brendan was there for the x-rays, and the two made a plan for rehabilitation.

Cushings results showed he was eight times higher than he should be, and he is now medicated again. The laminitis will most probably be from lack of medication, as Cushings ponies generally die from laminitis.

Trip to Brendan's.
Brendan made Bandit some aluminum bar shoes and glued them on his fronts. The fun thing is that as all Bandit's hooves and different lengths, everything is custom made.
Bandit loves his shoes and is much more sound on them. He can walk briskly away from you if he suspects you are catching him.

So every six weeks, we will float up to Brendan's shed and get our shoes done and back hooves trimmed.

Week Five.
Bandit's medication is making him fussy with food. We no longer eat much beet, and we p**s on our hay. We only want grass and nuts. So I am hand walking him in the long grass on the side of the road. This has less sugar and is safer for him. Thankfully, Janette is giving me a few selections of different safe foods for me to try this weekend.

Here's the update on Rainbow Valley's palliative care services. Thankfully, we all love Bandit. He has the sweetest wee nature, and that makes it easier when he drains my bank account.

I'll keep everyone updated with his progress, and if you would like to read his vet report, I'm happy to send you a copy. There are some very scary pedal bone angles.

Fun times today at Lil Trotters in the sun! A few of us even wore shorts!

Bandit the new pony is already worth his weight in gold, he enjoyed his many brushes from the kids.

Lil Miss, Simba and Bonita were our hardest workers today in the pony and carriage rides department.

It does make me laugh what the kids and I chat about when we go around the track. Hinepare won hands down today, informing me that when she is six, she will do a horse show just like her big sister did. Koro will be leading her and he needs to start exercising to get ready. Poor Koro 😆

Our new direction at RVE 🐴🐎🦄

With a passion for breeding Welsh Mountain Ponies and teaching children, it seems only natural to combine the two!

Our direction is changing and tacking us down a new path with exciting times ahead.

With careful consideration, from Term 3 onwards, we will be accepting new riders who are 10 years and under.

We will continue to service our existing older riders but from here on in, we will be specializing in younger riders and smaller ponies.

Please feel free to share around with your friends and family.
Both after school and weekend lessons are available on request.
