North Island Bull Terrier Club (NZ)

North Island Bull Terrier Club (NZ) Welcome to the North Island Bull Terrier Club. The club supports Dogs NZ preservation breeders. Dogs Dogs NZ breeders are preservation breeders.

The club is affiliated with Dogs NZ (New Zealand Kennel Club), and Bull Terriers are our primary interest! Membership is open to any Bull Terrier & Bull Terrier (Miniature) lover, you don't need to even own the breed. You are certain to have come here because you love Bull Terriers. They are very distinctive looking and definitely have their own set of behaviours. However, many unregistered Bull T

erriers are bred without any knowledge of the breed standard and these dogs are losing the unique look of the breed due to ‘nearly’ Bull Terriers being bred from and advertised as pure. They certify that their puppies are pure by registering them with Dogs NZ pedigrees. One of these registration certificates is your gold standard when buying a puppy. The breed standard is a written description of what the Bull Terrier should look like and is the blueprint for each and every mating. Sure you might not care about pedigree papers… but can you guarantee that what you are buying is actually 100% Bull Terrier if you buy dogs that don’t have Kennel Club, registered pedigrees? There are hundreds of dogs advertised on Trademe every year as ‘purebred without papers’ when in fact nearly every single one of these dogs/pups are crossbreds. The first thing these pups lose is the distinctive ‘downfaced’ egg-shaped head. A pedigree is a certified family history produced by the New Zealand Kennel Club. A dog is only a pedigree if he/she has this certified paperwork. The club welcomes ALL Bull Terriers and is able to include ‘nearly Bull Terriers’ in the fun events (ie Olympics, Bully walks). By doing so we hope we can teach fans of the BT about how the breed is supposed to look and behave. If the breeding of unregistered dogs continues as it is now we will lose the unique look that drew us to this breed in the first place. The club, originally known as the Auckland Bull Terrier Club was first registered with the Incorporated Societies in September 1973. It became the North Island Bull Terrier Club in 1999. The aims of the club are to promote the breeding and exhibiting of healthy Bull Terriers conforming to the official standard of Dogs NZ (NZKC). To promote friendship and cooperation amongst breeders, owners and exhibitors of Bull Terrier and to assist them in every way possible for the benefit of the breed. Please do NOT refer anyone to non-Dogs NZ registered breeders through our club’s page or try to buy and sell puppies.

The Recognition of Merit Award

Administered by an elected committee representing the Bull Terrier Clubs of New Zealand

The Recognition of Merit (ROM) is a points-based award system run by the Bull Terrier Clubs of New Zealand that are associated with DogsNZ (New Zealand Kennel Club). It was implemented to recognize a select group of dogs that can consistently win under breed specialist judges at the highest level of competition. The main objective of the award is to distinguish Bull Terriers that with opportunity, are most likely to contribute to the betterment of the breed. Points for dogs and bi***es are awarded separately so that the best of each s*x at any particular time is acknowledged. Both Bull Terriers and Bull Terrier (Miniature) are eligible to collect points under approved judges.

From 1998 until September 2018 the Bull Terrier clubs of New Zealand competed for this award under the umbrella of the National Bull Terrier Council of Australia. During this time 39 Bull Terriers and 11 Miniatures were awarded this prestigious title. In September 2018 the NZ BT clubs combined to create an award that could be piloted nationally. A working group of breeders and administrators representing the North Island Bull Terrier Club and the Canterbury Bull Terrier club were tasked with fashioning an award that was similar to the Australian scheme while working within DogsNZ rules and regulations. These were sent to each club to be ratified.

The point value of each qualifying placement is exactly the same as the Australian award, as are the conditions under which they must be won. This means that points gained under the Australian scheme can be used toward the NZ award and that all past and future winners will have met the same conditions in order to qualify for the award.

The working group also referenced the Bull Terrier Club of America's Recognition of Merit system and integrated some of its ideas and ideals to round out the NZROM.
