*** EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ***
We are looking at organizing a far north trip for one of our equine vets. This would be up to Kaitaia, or further if there is the work, and everywhere in between. At moment we would be looking at 29th and 30th of this month.
Services that are on offer:
- X-rays – please note this will require mains power a level concrete floor and out of the weather. We may be able to get multiple horses in one place for this if you don’t have these facilities.
- Ultrasound – tendons or reproductive. Note repro scans require mares to be in a purpose-built crush.
- Dentals
- Lameness exams
If you are keen to get booked in, please message this page with your contact details, the number of horses, location and what work is required, and we will add you to the list. Booking times will be finalized closer to the time once the trip is confirmed.
Disclaimer – this is a one-off service. Any ongoing care or emergency care should be sought from your regular veterinarian.
If there is enough interest, we would be looking to make these regular trips.

GREEN GRASS !

We are all very happy to finally see a bit of rain but with the grass turning green our beloved ponies could be at risk.
Parasites love this warm wet weather and we are starting to see a rise in colic cases, which can be related to a parasite burden.

This is a great time to drop off a fresh poo sample for a f***l egg count to find out if your horses require drenching. This is a great way to ensure you are not drenching unless actually required and indicate if you have a serious parasite problem on your property.

Fresh poo samples should be kept in the fridge until you are able to get them to us.

LAMENESS:

Our vets have had a few interesting lameness cases recently involving fractures. Luckily for this 6yo gelding, his owner opted for a comprehensive lameness work up early on.

What could have easily been mistaken for just another abscess, has in fact reminded us just how fragile our 4 legged friends can be!

After he suddenly showed a moderate lameness one day, that didn't resolve or worsen with a couple of days rest, our equine vets Nicole and Ingeborg performed a full lameness exam.

Nerve blocks were used to block the feeling to parts of his leg to pin point where the lameness was coming from. This indicated that the pain was coming from somewhere near the fetlock area.

X-rays of the fetlock area revealed a small fracture to the long pastern bone - can you spot it?

Thankfully, as it was caught early it didn’t get a chance to worsen, and is not serious enough to require surgical intervention. With box rest and time, the prognosis for complete recovery is good.

Sometimes lameness can be much more than the usual abscess or stone bruise. This case reminds us of the importance of a lameness exam for any non-resolving lameness issues.
We are grateful to have portable X-ray and ultrasound units that allow us to work up these cases in depth, right here in Northland.

If you have a horse with a non-resolving lameness, please do get in touch with our Waipapa clinic

The start of February marks the breeding season coming to an end for us with just a few follow up scans to go.
It's felt like a long breeding season for our team with a lot of mares going to frozen semen, a few fresh and even some live covers to keep us on our toes.
We can't wait to see the products of our hard work next season including some foals of our own 😍 thanks to all our lovely clients who have sent mares to us this season, you guys have been great!

We are pleased to welcome Nicole Johnston to our veterinarian team.
A familiar face to many, Nicole grew up in Kerikeri and spent her high school and university holiday time as Hilary's sidekick for the last 10 years.
Now a fully qualified veterinary herself, Nicole has returned to work at Bay Vets as a mixed animal veterinarian.
You will find Nicole working across all of our clinics often with her side kick Frankie who is one of our amazing blood donor dogs. She has a special interest in equine and breeding and has been busy with mares already. In the weekend you will probably find her riding at show or working to set up her new property as an equestrian facility.

Last chance to get your mares bred. The liquid nitrogen tank is full and we are ready to take a limited number of mares for frozen semen insemination. We are also still accepting mares for fresh chilled insemination.
Remember, if your mare has been paddock bred it is recommended to get a pregnancy scan at around 16days to check for twins (mares will seldom successfully carry twins to full term).

- Bay of Islands I+P Show -

We are excited to have a tent at the show this year for all things equine - particularly parasites!!

Does your horse have worms? How would you know? What should you treat it with? And how much should you give it? These are all common questions when addressing your parasite problems.

If you're competing at the show come and see us at our tent to get your horse weighed to aid in accurate dosing. Prizes for guessing your horses weight correctly!

We are also offering free faecal egg counts on the day so bring us a poo sample and find out if your horses need drenching.

Also come and check out our new xray machine. See what we can do with hoof balance xrays to assist your farrier.

And if you can handle it, we have a huge slide show of gory pics to look at.

MARE BREEDING
The year is racing along, Christmas is just around the corner.
If you are thinking of breeding your mare this year we recommend you start getting organised now.
We like to have a break over Christmas/New Year so if you want to breed your mare before Christmas things will need to be well under way before mid December; otherwise your mare may have to wait until mid-January.
At Bay Vets Equine we offer both fresh chilled and frozen semen artificial insemination. We have limited spaces available for mares to agist on site for the breeding process.
We can also scan mares that have been paddock bred, check out mares that have failed to get in foal and offer pre and post foaling checks and advice.

Bay of Islands Vets, Equine now has a dedicated Equine X-ray machine. Our new Radincon machine takes amazing images. And the best thing is, it is available solely for equine use, and a whole lot more portable. Meaning we can provide x-ray services to a much wider area of Northland.
Combining this with the skills that Ingeborg, one of our equine vets, has developed from time working in referral practices, we are well placed to get top quality images.
We can offer diagnostics for lameness and injury, as well as full screening when performing pre-purchase exams.

HOOVES AND MUD
Most of our horses have been standing in sodden, muddy paddocks for weeks now. Their soles will be soft and thin, and now very prone to abscesses. If you've noticed your horse being on and off lame recently, they may have a hoof abscess that is tracking right around the hoof wall. The one in the photo probably started at the toe, has tracked round the sides and has come out both heels. It will now be a long time before this horse will be comfy without sole protection. If you notice your horse is lame, get it seen to early and try to prevent this. Please also check if your horse's tetanus vaccination is up to date, hoof abscesses can, on rare occasions, tragically result in a lethal bout of tetanus.

WORM WARNING
It's that time of year....the spring pasture is on it's way. The very mild winter means a lot of horses have developed significant parasite burdens. The pasture change, combined with a high burden of encysted cyathostome larvae in the gut wall can often result in a nasty bout of colic. If you have not drenched your horse in the past two months please, please, please get a f***l egg count done as an indicator of your horse's parasite burden; or just drench it.
Not all drenches are created equal - please talk to our helpful staff in the Waipapa clinic who will discuss your options.

Who else is enjoying the sunshine this morning?

My mare and I got some exercise in this morning by going for a walk together. As she is carrying a little too much fat and thus is at risk of laminitis, we are adding regular exercise into our routine (as well as reducing her fresh grass intake as mentioned in our previous post). Walking up hill definitely had both of us tired by the end!

So whether you and your horse prefer riding, lunging, or simply walking, get some exercise in together!

My mare, like many others at the moment, is getting carried away eating too much of the lush green grass at the moment. With her being at risk of laminitis I need to be very careful feeding her. So I thought I'd share a few tips on how to feed horses that are at risk of laminitis.

As obesity and excess sugars in the diet are the most important risk factors in laminitis, these are important to target during management and prevention.

Grazing time on fresh grass should be limited as this is high in sugars.
- Restrict grazing time to only a few hours per day. Ideally early in the morning or late at night (between 10 pm and 10 am). During these times grass has the lowest sugar content.
- Allow time on grass wearing a grazing muzzle. This limits the horse to graze only the leafy tops and avoids the sugary short grass.

Avoid feeding high sugar feeds, instead try a low sugar alternative such as Dunstan's 'All-4-Feet'.

Remember, horses still need to eat! Offer plenty of hay to keep their bellies full. Hay has a much lower sugar content than grass, so is the preferred choice for the at risk horse.
- Horses need to eat 1.5 - 2 % of their body weight in dry matter per day. When taking the horse off grass; make sure they have enough hay available!
- Soaking hay for 1 hour before feeding will remove a large amount of the sugars still present in the hay. Remember to tip the water out before feeding as this now makes a very sweet drink!

24/10/2021

This wet and horrible weather can bring many challenges for our four legged friends. As the weather clears up, the grass will begin to flush putting horses at risk of colic and laminitis. To prevent this you should limit their grass intake and feed plenty of hay to keep their bellys full and happy.
Many horses will develop rain scald over the next few days. Watch this carefully. Any swelling, ooze, or pain is a sign of infection. If this happens your horse will need a vet visit and likely require antibiotics.
Keep a close eye on them for signs of colic or laminitis and call us immediately with any concerns!
Crossing our fingers for weather like this photo again soon 🤞☀️
