❗️Bloat is a serious and often fatal condition in cattle, often seen in early spring when pastures are lush and growing rapidly.

High-protein pastures, with a significant composition of clover, have increased risk.

It happens when gases from rumen fermentation get trapped in the rumen and the animal can not burp the gases out.

The result is a sudden significant left sided swelling of the rumen which causes major respiratory distress from a variety of mechanisms.

Visible signs include left-side swelling, discomfort, wobbly unstable movement that eventually fall over in severe cases and rapid laboured breathing often from the mouth.

It is an emergency. Do not move the animal(s). Ring the Vet immediately.

Prevention is the best option but not always fully protective under severe conditions.

Bloat capsules, bloat oils dispensed in the water and adding fibre to the diet prior to offering high risk feeds are all preventative options to consider and take a few days to effect.

Tips:

❗️Hungry empty cows are a risk as they can gorge themselves when going onto a new pasture.

Frosty or heavy cloud mornings can also exacerbate the risks of bloat on high risk pastures.

Observe the cattle 30-60 minutes after letting them onto at risk pastures to check for signs.

Aren’t cattle amazing?? 🐄 This mob of cows were neck deep in flooding and at risk of being swept into the river in Waipawa yesterday. With some encouragement from their owner they swam over 500 meters towards her voice and to safety! A quick time-lapse of our sheep technicians on farm. Drench, vaccinations and pour on all done in one go! With tupping fast approaching in one of the wettest summers in memory, it’s timely to consider the options for treating sheep against external parasites. Our Sheep Technicians can provide jetting off the conveyor, with a craigco jetter or a shower dipper. These are an effective and economical way to eradicate flies, mites, lice & ticks.
