Some really valuable advice here!

It can be quite hard to keep on top of where poisoning is happening, here are the places where we know pindone has been put down in the last week or so:

- Walking track between Waimana Place and Beacon Point Road

- Sticky Forest (including alongside the main walking track above Forest Heights/Infinity Drive)

If you know of anywhere else, please comment below and I'll add it to our list! It's just good to stay informed 🐾

The team at Remarkable Vets have noted and increased occurrence of dogs coming into contact with Pindone poison this winter compared to previous years.

Pindone is an anti-coagulant rodenticide frequently used for pest control in New Zealand. Unfortunately, it can also pose serious risks to non-target animals like dogs and cats if they come into contact with or ingest it.

Signs of Pindone toxicity may not appear for a few days after ingestion. The symptoms are primarily due to internal bleeding caused by the poison’s effect on clotting factors. Symptoms can include pale gums, lethargy, coughing, difficulty breathing, and bleeding issues such as nose bleeds or blood in the urine.

If you suspect your dog has ingested Pindone, it is crucial to get them to a vet immediately. We can induce vomiting to expel any recently ingested poison and prevent absorption and clinical signs. If it has been more than a few hours after ingestion, there is an antidote - Vitamin K - that can help counteract the poison’s effects. Dogs that have active bleeding may also require an emergency blood or plasma transfusion.

For pet owners in areas where Pindone is used, vigilance is key. Keep dogs on leads or away from treated areas, and be aware that pest control operators are legally required to post clear notice about their use of poisons in areas where it is used.

If you would like to know more about the effects of Pindone please contact on of our clinics to speak with one of our team.

We've had lots of very satisfying de-sheds in lately! And imagine how satisfying for their owners not to have allll this hair in their carpets πŸ€”

Shedding breeds will shed their coat continuously, but a good de-shed treatmentand a thorough brush out will help to remove the loose undercoat that's ready to come out and you should notice a significant decrease in the hair around your home.

How often this should be done really depends on the dog (and your hair-tolerances levels!). We have clients who visit us weekly, some come fortnightly or monthly, and some just come whenever their owners feel it's all getting a bit too much!

We LOVE a good de-shed, even if it means we're pulling hair out of our eyeballs for the next 3 days πŸ˜‚πŸΆπŸΎ

Brand new in stock at The Hound Hub are these beautiful handcrafted pet blankets from Ali J's Crafts, a local business owned and solely operated by lovely local lady and long-time friend of The Hound Hub, Alice Watson.

Alice has lovingly created these blankets specifically with your pets in mind! Made using acrylic yarn so they are machine washable and hard wearing.

They are an absolute steal at just $20 each, and in so many beautiful colours! I'm sure they will fly out of the door 🐢🐾

I thought it was about time we properly introduce the latest groomer to join our team - Mel!

Mel completed an extensive 2 year City & Guilds dog grooming qualification in the UK, before returning to Wanaka earlier this year. We're super stoked to have her as part of our Hound Hub team!

Here she is with Hound Hub regular, Chloe, looking flash after her groom this afternoon πŸΎβœ‚οΈ

Here's another question we get asked all the time, and it's a hard one because it's so variable depending on the season, the weather, whether it's term time or not...

But just as an example, today is a fairly typical day and we'll be seeing a whopping TWENTY NINE DOGS across grooming, daycare and walking 😱 And we love every single one of them πŸ₯°

Happy Tuesday! 🐢🐾

Molly the retrodoodle puppy has just been for her third weekly puppy groom, and we could not be more proud of the confident wee thing she has become!

Many new puppy owners make the mistake of leaving it too long before bringing their pup for the first time, and this can make it really hard on the pup and your groomer. Standing still on a table in a busy salon, with all the unfamiliar sounds, smells and equipment, can be very overwhelming and is a lot to expect for a dog for their very first visit to a grooming salon. That's why we encourage you to start as early as you can (from around 12-14 weeks), to give your puppy time to get used to everything at their own pace and to set them up for a lifetime of stress-free grooming!

Here's a wee peek at Molly's grooming journey so far:

🐾Week 1 (14 weeks old)🐾
She was a very, very wriggly little puppy for her first session! We spent the entire time teaching Molly to keep all four paws on the table without trying to jump off. No actual grooming was done today, she was far too wriggly to risk using any of our sharp tools. This is very normal for a dog's first grooming experience! We gave Molly's lovely mum some things to work on at home.

🐾Week 2 (15 weeks old)🐾
Molly's mum had obviously put the time in at home, as today she was much better at standing nicely on the table! We were able to do some light trimming around her eyes and bum, and clipped her nails too. We also introduced her to the sound of the clipper and ran it along her body with no blade on, which she was fine with. This is huge progress for just the second session!

🐾Today, week 3 (16 weeks old)🐾
Molly skipped happily into the salon today, confident as anything πŸ₯° we gave her a bath and a blowdry, which she did so well for. She didn't love the dryer near her face, so we didn't push it and left her slightly damp around her front end. The most important thing is we make sure every experience in the salon is a positive one, and we won't try to do things shes not comfortable with.

If you have a new puppy and you'd like to dicuss their grooming needs, get in touch! We would love to hear from you πŸ₯°πŸΎ

Rufus came in for his first ever groom today - we had to take off that big winter coat as there were a few knotty patches hiding underneath, but he was SUCH a good boy for his first groom and we reckon he suits his fresh new look! The best thing about hair is that it grows back, and sometimes the best thing to do is start again and let it grow back in nice and healthy.

Rufus, you were an absolute star and I can't wait to see you again πŸ₯°πŸΎ

Another of our most frequently asked questions answered!

"Do you offer walk-ins for grooming?"

MOST of our grooming services are offered by pre-booked appointments, however for a few of our shorter services we can do walk-ins Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am-2pm (please note there may be a short wait if we're really busy).

Available for walk-ins:

πŸ› Bath & Towel Dry - $30
Double shampoo & conditioning treatment plus a spritz of doggy cologne (optional). Premium products used.
10-15 minutes
(This service is best suited for short haired dogs. Please be mindful that your dog will leave still damp and this may not be ideal on a cold, overcast day)

πŸ’… Nail Clip - $15
5-10 minutes

🐾 Nail Clip & File - $20
5-10 minutes

On a day like this, it's a great time to answer one of our most frequently asked questions - "do you still walk in the rain?"

The answer is YES! A bit of rain never hurt anyone, and your dog still needs their walk!

We do cancel walks when we feel the weather may cause a danger to your dogs or our walkers - strong winds, icy roads, washed out tracks, thunder and lightning... But these events are pretty rare here in Wanaka, luckily!

If you decide to cancel for rain our usual cancellation policy applies.

Here's an excerpt from our Terms of Service regarding weather:

"We work in all weathers except where we feel there may be a danger to our staff and your pets (eg., icy roads, extremely strong winds). In this rare event services will be cancelled and the client will not be charged. For services booked across more than one day due to the client being away (where there is no other caregiver at the home), pets WILL be cared for (however timings may differ from the original agreement based on what we are physically able to do).Β
If a client chooses to cancel due to weather conditions our usual cancellation policies will apply."

Happy Monday! A few updates to start the week:

βœ‚οΈ We have plenty of grooming availability with Bonnie and Emily this week. Please book online if your dog needs a spruce up! Remember we don't need to take them too short for winter as long as they're not matted, so don't make the mistake of leaving it too long between appointments! A matted dog is not a happy dog, or a warm one.

🐾 We have some rare availability on our morning group hikes - get in touch to find out more!

🐢 Daycare is getting very busy! We are now at capacity for new dogs over 15kg. For existing big dogs and new small dogs, please book online. We can take casual bookings only where we have availability, so probably not last minute anymore.

⭐ This Friday is Matariki so we'll be closed for all services. Hope you all enjoy the festivities! We'll be home with our scaredy dogs who don't love the fireworks, as I'm sure many of you will be too. Keep an eye out later in the week for a blog about how you can help your dog during fireworks!

🚫 It pains me to have to say this one, but please make sure you treat our staff like human beings πŸ™ƒ I wish I could say it was rare we have to deal with rudeness (quite honestly verging on verbal abuse and bullying) but it's becoming more and more common. I understand times are tough and tensions are high, but please remember we're here to help you as best we can and we don't deserve this. If this is ringing any bells for you, don't be surprised if you find you're not able to book in with us again. We don't care who you are, how much money you have, or how long you've lived here... We simply don't tolerate that kind of behaviour.

πŸ«‚ On a happier note, we have lots and lots of lovely customers who we appreciate very much! Thank you β™₯️

Here's a photo of Rusty and Baxter at daycare last week. Baxter makes a comfy chair I'm sure! 🀣🐾

We are now stocking .nz dog food! And we have a sample jar so your dog can try before you buy... They will love it!

Why we love Naturally Pawsome:

- Small kibble size makes it palatable for even the smallest of dogs and can also double up as your training treats!

- Contains 15% raw, freeze dried pieces which make it extra tasty and a more balance food option.

- Created locally, right here in Wanaka!

- Created by a friendly Wanaka local, Adam Ross, who has a background in Zoology and as a chef on super yachts... Perfect combo we reckon!

Come on in and check it out!
