CHRISTMAS FOR THE PARROTS

With Christmas just around the corner, I made sure to get gifts for our 14 beloved parrots at the rescue. Since most of these amazing birds are permanent residents due to disabilities, age, or behavioral issues, I wanted to make their holiday season extra special.

As a devoted mum, I put in extra hours at work to get each bird a unique gift. The aviary birds are already having a blast destroying their new toys – it's all part of their fun enrichment! The other indoor birds are also loving there's.

However, two cockatoos, Pearl and Albert, require a more tailored approach.
Pearl, our 31-year-old cockatoo, is still learning to understand and play with toys. Due to our limited budget, introducing new toys can be a challenge. But with patience and playtime with her dad, we're hoping she'll soon get the hang of it.

Albert, our 4-year-old cockatoo, faces anxiety and behavioral issues, so we chose a less intense toy to help him relax. Introducing new objects can be overwhelming for him, so we take it slow with plenty of encouragement and cuddles.

If you'd like to spoil one of our parrots or reptiles this Christmas, please consider making a donation and leaving the name of the animal you'd like to shop for in the description. Your kindness will bring joy to our amazing animals!

Specializing in reptiles, parrots, amphibians, and fish, Be Kind offers a safe, nurturing space until these animals find their forever homes. Notably, they are one of only a few rescues in Auckland accepting animals from the banned species list.

Education is at the heart of Be Kind's mission, with a focus on promoting responsible animal care and fostering compassion for all species.

WELCOME BACK TILLY!

We're happy to welcome Tilly the water dragon back to our rescue. Earlier this year, Tilly joined a new home with a large enclosure and other water dragon companions. Unfortunately, Tilly's gentle nature clashed with the other dragons, and despite the owner's best efforts, it didn't work out.

As per our adoption agreement, Tilly has returned to us, and we're excited to find him a new home where he can thrive. Tilly is a sweet and affectionate guy who deserves a home with other gentle dragons.

Harnessing Safety for Your Reptile Friends

As reptile enthusiasts, I know people adore taking their scaly companions on outdoor adventures, soaking up the sun and exploring new surroundings. However, safety should always be our top priority.

Reptile harnesses are specifically designed to prevent escape attempts, even in your own backyard. These harnesses come in various styles, including adorable and functional designs.

Using a reptile harness is crucial because even the most well-behaved reptiles can get startled or distracted, leading to a potentially dangerous escape. Reptiles can move surprisingly fast, making it challenging to catch them if they get loose. By harnessing your reptile, you can enjoy outdoor time with them, knowing they're secure and safe.

At our rescue, we take reptile safety so seriously that we've made it a requirement in our adoption agreements: all reptiles must be harnessed or contained when taken outside.

Let's prioritize our reptiles' safety and well-being. Harness up and enjoy stress-free outdoor adventures with your scaly friends!

WHY WE MICROCHIP

I know a few people question why we microchip every animal in the rescue (except aquatic life).
So I thought I'd share what happened the other day.

I was working when I got a phone call from a vet in Hamilton. Someone had brought in Reggie the blue-tongued skink.
Lucky I have all the contact details of people who adopt, and I gave Reggie's owner a call right away. They had no idea the little guy had made a break for it - lucky he was found on the street right behind his house, and the vet knew to check for a microchip.
That evening Reggie returned home safe and sound to a modified house where he can't get out of.

Things can happen, animals can get out no matter how much we think we have prepared for it, but lucky Reggie was chipped and was able to be returned home.

I believe every animal that can should be microchipped. I'm hoping in the new year to hold another chipping event for all exotic animals so stay tuned for that.

A UNEXPECTED LOSS

Some of you may recall our adorable blind leopard gecko, Candle. Although she's blind, Candle can perceive shapes and shadows.

This week, disaster struck. A power outage hit, with surging electricity before I managed to cut power to the rescue room. It must have spooked Candle, causing her to drop her tail!

I was shocked, as we've never experienced this, even during medical procedures like tube feeding or injections. The flickering lights proved too much for our little gecko.

Fortunately, Candle is recovering well, and her disability hasn't hindered her normal bodily functions. We jokingly said she dropped her tail out of spite for not getting crickets this week!

On a serious note, Candle's resilience is inspiring. We're grateful she's doing well and hope to avoid any more harrowing power surges in the future πŸ˜†.

UPDATE ON PEARL

I'm thrilled to share Pearl's incredible progress! Since her arrival, she's transformed from a fragile, 550g bird to a thriving 695g beauty.

Initially, Pearl was emaciated, covered in mold, and suffered many different issues. Her distress was palpable, and she'd constantly scream. But with patience, love, and proper care, Pearl has blossomed.

We've enjoyed many successful baths, helping to remove the mold and promote healthy clean feathers. Pearl's also become more skilled at preening herself. While she's taken short flights, she prefers walking or being carried.

Pearl adores toys – especially destroying them! She's also mastered a brain puzzle, showcasing her intelligence. Food is a clear favorite, but her strongest bond is with my partner, Liam. Their connection has significantly contributed to Pearl's recovery.

Although Pearl remains vocal and prone to screaming, she's learning to self-soothe and become more independent. We're proud of her remarkable progress!

Our next challenge is tackling her nail care. We're proceeding cautiously, trimming tiny bits at a time, to avoid causing stress or damaging the trust we've built.

(I know in the photo it doesn't say 695g but that's because she kept dancing when she finally stopped we could get the actual weight πŸ˜†)

PLEASE BE KIND

It's important to always be kind. I named my rescue 'Be Kind' for this reason; being kind to all kinds is vital. Unfortunately, I dealt with someone unkind today.

I've gotten nasty messages before after frustrating someone by not letting them adopt a cockatoo for their 5-year-old or informing them about reptile enclosure size regulations. But today's message was unexpected. Someone inquiring about adopting a reptile became abusive, calling me names like "fat useless cu*t" because I didn't respond immediately.

Managing 50+ animals and two jobs is very time consuming. Emergency contact info's available, but responses may delay I'm sorry.
I try not to take abuse personally, considering life's complexities.

MEET INKAY

She's a lovely 10-year-old leopard gecko. As you can tell, she was incredibly well-loved and received exceptional care from her amazing mum. Life's unexpected changes brought her to us.

I'm deeply grateful that owners trust me with their beloved pets, providing reassurance that they'll receive lifelong love and care. Inkay's vibrant personality shines! This charming older lady still has plenty of life, love and adventure ahead. I'm thrilled to welcome her and explore her unique spirit.

CRICKETS!

Less than 24 hours later, I got Aries to eat! Before syringe feeding, I always try live food first. She showed slight interest, so I sat with her for over an hour - and finally, she took 2 crickets!

Thank goodness for crickets! We don't want to risk re-feeding syndrome, so 2 is perfect. We also removed all her stuck shed.

I'm super happy and hope she'll continue to enjoy the delicious crickets coming from Mealworms 2U

Next step: fixing those eyes!

MEET ARIES

This sweet girl was surrendered today after a kind member of the public saw her needing help and took her in until she was able to find a rescue to take her.

Aries has some health issues we unfortunately see to often in geckos being surrendered. She is underweight, has stuck shed and eye issues. Because of this she isn't wanting to eat.

We are hoping she will want to eat delicious crickets. Once she starts to feel better.

Unfortunately eye issues is something we see alot in geckos and Aries is the 5th gecko we currently have in the rescue with this problem.
We are hoping they can be fixed and permitted damage haven't been done yet.
Unfortunately eyes are very delicate and most of the geckos we have in at the moment with eye damage have lasting scars.

Our rescue is caring for a record number of animals in recovery and our funds are running low.

Please consider donating to support life-saving care for animals like beautiful Aries.

Every donation counts.

HAPPY REPTILES!

We're thrilled with Mealworms 2U amazing deals and fun competitions for delicious bugs!

Their latest offer was too good to pass up - 50% OFF! As a reptile rescue, we go through a lot of bugs, and deals like this are a lifesaver.

Plus, they generously threw in 50 FREE crickets, which is a game-changer for our disabled and hospice reptiles who only eat crickets.

We're grateful for Mealworms 2U's kindness and commitment to quality feeder insects.

COCKATOO CRAZY

Meet Elsie, our newest feathered friend! This 2-year-old sulfur-crested cockatoo joined our rescue today.

Elsie's shy nature hides a sweet and loving personality, waiting to be uncovered. With patience and love, she'll flourish.

Grateful for my bird whisperer partner, who's already won Elsie's heart β™₯

Our resident cockatoos, Albert and Pearl, are expert welcome ambassadors, helping Elsie settle in.

Did you know? Cockatoos can live over 100 years! That's a lifetime commitment, and we're honored to be part of Elsie's journey.

As she grows, Elsie's brown baby eyes will turn red, but her youthful spirit will remain.
