EXPO SETUP COMPLETE!

We're just a few finishing touches away from being ready for this year's Pet Expo! Tomorrow's the big day, and we can't wait to see you all there.

Huge thanks to our incredible setup crew: Sophie, Freya, Hannah, and Dylan. Your help with transportation and setup has been invaluable. We couldn't have done it without you!

To my amazing partner, happy 5-year anniversary! Sorry I'm spending our special day away, but thank you for holding down the fort at home and caring for our beloved creatures. Your support means everything.

WELCOME PEARL

Late last night, our rescue family grew with the arrival of Pearl, a charming 30-year-old cockatoo. We're already smitten with her sweet and friendly nature.
Pearl's previous owner sadly passed away, and the temporary caregiver couldn't keep her, so we took her on.

Pearl currently can't fly due to muscle loss, but we're hopeful strength training will help. Each bird's journey is unique, and we're taking it one step at a time. First step is a good bath and some weight gain, Pearl is already discovering her new surroundings and loves scratches! She can be quite insistent about getting attention.

As we get to know Pearl better, we've identified a few behaviors to work on, but her potential is clear. With patience, love, and proper care, we know she'll thrive.

One urgent need is a suitable enclosure. Pearl's original cage isn't suitable, and our spare cages are too small. We're seeking a donated cockatoo-sized cage to ensure her safety. If you have one to spare or know someone who does, please contact us!

We're excited to support Pearl's journey and watch her flourish.

Confessions of a vegan animal parent

As a 10-year vegan, I never thought I'd be comfortable handling meat, but my animals’ health comes first. Preparing meals for my rescues and residents has always been a challenge. I've even had to master injecting high-calorie wet mix into steak and fish for my water dragons, Nudge and Freddy, who need a little encouragement to eat.

Sometimes I feel like a chef, preparing tailored meals for my animals. My partner jokes that he wishes I put the same effort into our dinners!

Being an animal parent is full of surprises, but seeing my babies thrive makes it all worth it.

SUNSHINE AND FUN IN THE GARDEN

I spent my day off working on my garden, where I'll grow delicious veggies for my furry feathered and scaly friends this spring. The beautiful weather was perfect for bringing some of my pets outside to play! Freddy, my curious companion, loved exploring, splashing in his bath, and basking in the warm sunshine.

Remember to always prioritize your pets' safety when taking them outdoors. Use enclosures or harnesses to prevent escape artists from disappearing into thin air! Let's keep our little ones secure and happy.

HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY, FANTA!

Before my journey in Exotic Rescue began, I was passionate about Possum Rescue. I had the joy of caring for many adorable baby possums, but never intended to keep one as my own. That was until Fanta entered my life. He was just a tiny baby, being sold on Facebook as "dog food" - one of the many heartbreaking reality possums face.

Fanta's early days Fanta suffered from nightmares and panic attacks, but with love, care, and patience, he's grown into the most incredibly chill possum ever! You may even recognize him from the Road Safely Ad "Day possum"

Fanta and I have shared countless ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade our journey for the world. I'm so proud of the strong, happy possum he's become.
Although I'm no longer actively involved in possum rescue, my heart remains committed to helping new possum parents navigate their journey.
Here's to many more adventures, my little man!

MEET LINK THE CHARISMATIC INDIAN RINGNECK

Link, a 9-year-old male Indian ringneck, joined our rescue family last week after being surrendered. This charming bird has already stolen our hearts with his fun-loving personality, impressive dance moves, and enthusiasm for veggies!

Our home has become a lively hub with Link chatting away with our two other ringnecks, and he's especially smitten with our female keeko. He's doing his best to impress her, and it's entertaining to watch!

Link is currently on hold for a potential adoption, pending microchipping.

FREDDY'S RECOVERY JOURNEY: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Freddy's road to recovery has been far from smooth. He lost his appetite and a significant amount of weight, refusing even syringe food.
We explored tube feeding options, a complex and risky procedure for reptiles, with two methods: oesophagostomy tube feeding and oral tube feeding. Although I've tube-fed various animals, from possums to calves, reptile tube feeding poses unique challenges.

I sat with Freddy, tears streaming down my face, pleading with him to eat for days my heart broke watching him spit out any food I offered.
I introduced a new food, a raw meat mix which I'd successfully used with my blue tongues. I added solder fly lava powder from Insects Direct and followed each mouthful with Dr. Martin's syringe food to wash it down. This labor-intensive process takes over an hour and can be messy, but it's paying off – Freddy is eating!

I was overjoyed when he produced a healthy bowel movement, and his interest in food is growing; today, he even ate a silk worm from iNZect direct , showing his interest in live bugs!
While we still face a long and uncertain journey, I'm grateful for the progress.

Rescue work can be frustrating, especially when caring for 40 animals, working, and dealing with setbacks. But every moment, no matter how challenging, is worth it. The heartbreak, mess, and chaos are all worth helping these incredible, misunderstood creatures. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

FREDDY'S UPDATE

We've got a double dose of good news! Not only did we welcome two adorable baby water dragons into our care, but Freddy also had a follow-up appointment with the incredible Dr. Martin!

Freddy's looking good, but only time will tell how well he heals. We're keeping our fingers crossed for a full recovery.

I can't sing Dr. Martin's praises enough! He's not only a fantastic vet who worked a miracle on Freddy's face, but he's also unbelievably kind. When I mentioned Freddy was struggling to eat after surgery, Dr. Martin generously donated specialized food and additional medication to support his recovery.

It's heartwarming to know we have Dr. Martin in our corner, ready to help our beautiful creatures whenever they need it. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Dr. Martin!

MEET THE NEWEST ADDITIONS

Today, we welcomed two adorable water dragon babies into our care! These tiny cuties are approximately 9 months old and are in excellent health. They're small but mighty, and their rambunctious personalities are already shining through!

Once they're microchipped, these little dragons will be ready for their forever homes. Stay tuned for updates on their adoption journey!

Hey wonderful, compassionate people from North Auckland to Whangarei! We have the chance to rescue 460 hens from an egg farm on Sunday the 18th of August - just 10 days AWAY!!! They're brown shavers, 18 months old.
PLEASE if you can adopt 2 or more hens and provide a safe home, go to https://franklinfarmsanctuary.co.nz/adoption-form/?adoption-type=Hens and fill in an application form ASAP. Sally will be in touch within 48 hours to explain the next steps of the process. If you can't adopt, please blow this post up!!!! 460 hens is such a manageable number, but only if people know it's happening!

FREDDY'S SURGERY SUCCESS!

Yesterday, we embarked on a journey to CareVets Glen Eden for Freddy's long-awaited surgery. It was a long and anxious day, but we're overjoyed to announce that the procedure was a huge success! The team at Care Vets did an outstanding job, and we're blown away by their expertise.

Freddy is recovering well, but as we know, reptile recoveries can be slow. He's sporting a stylish chin now, complete with tubes to keep his skin in place. We can't wait to see him thrive!

We're grateful for the incredible donation from The Animal Sanctuary , which made this surgery possible!
And to all of you who donated, thank you for your kindness and support. Your generosity has significantly improved Freddy's quality of life, reducing the risk of bone infection and making him even more handsome (if that's possible!).

Freddy, our big, brave boy, trusted us throughout this process, and we're so proud of him. Thank you, Freddy, for being a rockstar!

FREDDY'S UPDATE

Today, we took Freddy to CareVets Glen Eden to consult with the amazing Dr. Martin about his upcoming surgery. Freddy wasn't thrilled about the early wake-up call, but he stole the show in the waiting room!

Dr. Martin was incredibly gentle and kind to our giant reptile friend. We're thrilled to have found a vet who can perform the surgery Freddy needs.
The plan is to return in two weeks for x-rays and the procedure, which will involve removing the exposed bone and giving Freddy a chin lift to cover the open area. Who knew plastic surgery was an option for reptiles too?!

In the lead-up to his surgery, we'll be pampering him and making sure he's ready. We're also fundraising for his surgery costs.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: TEMPORARY CLOSURE

We are temporarily closed from now until July 10th. I'm thrilled to share that I'll be taking a well-deserved trip to the UK to visit my grandparents - a chance to reconnect with family and explore the amazing reptiles the UK has to offer!

Rest assured, our beloved animals will be in excellent hands with our trusted and experienced caregiver. However, please note that I won't be able to accept new animals or respond to messages as promptly during my absence.

This break is a rare treat for me, and I'm grateful for your understanding. I'll be back soon, refreshed and ready to dive back into our rescue work!

LORIKEET PALOOZA 🌈

Meet Grogu, the newest addition to our flock!
This sweet girl was surrendered to our care today and has already delighted us with her playful kisses and chatty personality.
Our quarantine room is now filled with the happy sounds of four lorikeets playing and socializing together. It's a joy to behold!

Grogu will be available for adoption next month, and we're excited to find her forever home.

ANOTHER LORIKEET ♥

Meet Jinx, the newest addition to our flock! This charming bird was surrendered today, and in just a few short hours, he's already stolen my heart with his playful antics and endearing personality. Jinx is a true clown, bursting with energy and goofy behavior that's sure to bring a smile to your face.
He's settling in beautifully, enjoying the attention and affection from his new feathered friends, Jelly and Kaydee.
A huge thank you to his wonderful previous owners, who have done an amazing job raising such a sweet and loving bird. I'm honored to have the trust to take on Jinx's care and find him his forever home.

ANOTHER LORIKEET 🌈

Meet Kaydee , the newest surrender.
This stunning lorikeet has already brought so much joy with her vibrant colors and playful personality.
She's a total charmer, loving nothing more than making people laugh and smile.
As fate would have it, Kaydee arrived just days after our lost rainbow lorikeet was reunited with his owner - one out, one in, indeed!
Once she's all settled and microchipped, KD will be ready for her forever home.

These mice were used for teaching purposes at the University of Auckland.

RESCUE STORIES: BOBNIE AND CLIVE HAPPY ENDING

Back in January, Bonnie and Clive arrived at our rescue, seeking a second chance. While their past story remains private, we can share their journey with us. Clive, a former plucker, needed work, and both birds required love and care.

When Steph visited us to help microchip our birds, she met Bonnie and Clive and was immediately captivated by their vibrant colors and charming personalities. As she spent time with them, she realized they were meant to be hers! After a thoughtful adoption process, she welcomed them into her beautiful aviary, offering a life of luxury and joy.

We're thrilled to see Clive's beautiful feathers growing back, and his plucking days behind him! Stories like these warm our hearts, knowing our rescued babies are thriving in their new homes.

JELLY IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Thanks to our wonderful friend Jo, Jelly has been microchipped and is now seeking a loving forever home. This playful rainbow lorikeet is full of energy and loves to entertain with her clownish antics. She enjoys playing games and getting attention, but be warned - she can be a bit feisty when things don't go her way.

While Jelly has shown some aggression towards children and feet in the past, I haven't experienced much of this behavior myself. She's more likely to throw a tantrum if things aren't done her way!

If you're an experienced bird owner, preferably with lorikeet experience, and have the time to spoil this little princess, we'd love to hear from you. Jelly is looking for someone who can provide the attention and care she wants.

DUSTY AND LUNA READY FOR THERE FOREVER HOME.

These two lovable birds are looking for a permanent residence where they can spread their wings and receive all the love and attention they deserve. Thanks to our amazing foster friend Sophie, they've made significant progress in socialization and are now comfortable perching on your hand (with a treat, of course!).

Dusty (formerly Beekboo) has made a remarkable transformation, gaining much-needed weight and thriving under Sophie's care. Both birds adore their chopped treats and have a special spot in their hearts for food - a great way to win them over!

FREDDY'S UPDATE

On Wednesday, Freddy and us embarked on a long journey to Hamilton to visit the incredible Globe Veterinary Services.
We had x-rays taken to assess the extent of the bone decay and determine the best course of action.
The plan is to treat Freddy with a lengthy course of antibiotics and pain medication to reduce the infection, followed by surgery in a few weeks to remove the exposed and damaged bone.

Freddy was an absolute trooper during his appointment and the trip there and back! I'm so proud of his bravery.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has donated to Freddy's care, big or small - it has meant the world to us and has made a significant difference in helping this gorgeous boy receive the treatment he needs.

I'll continue to keep you all updated on Freddy's journey. Thank you again for your support and kindness!

WHAT AN AWSOME DONATION! Our new ‘Be Kind Exotic Animal Rescue’ has had incredible support from the community, and I couldn't be more thankful. We received this amazing donation of wax worms. With a house full of reptiles, it can get very expensive to feed them. So this donation helped heaps! Wax worms are fantastic for getting the newly surrendered reptiles to eat as they as so sweet and tasty. (LOL, No, I haven’t tried them myself.) Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far and shared our name. I feel really lucky to be part of such an amazing, kind community.

Speedy Ivar

SWEETEST NEW BABY IN THE RESCUE: Part 2 On Wednesday we returned to the vet with the little water dragon, now named Ivar. There was some movement in his hips and mid-way along the tail, but still nothing in his back legs. We did some x-rays. Happily, we didn't find any broken bones; but sadly, the x-rays did show MBD. We are going to continue with hydrotherapy and physical therapy to see if Ivar can gain any movement back. The vet and I both believe the damage is the result of incorrect incubation. We will be back to the vets once Ivar is a bit bigger so we can re-check his spine. But for now he’s receiving all the love and care he deserves. And if you’re worried that he can’t walk without his hind legs, just check out this video. He’s so fast I have trouble even capturing it on video!!
