Harnesses needed

We have very low on XS and S harnesses. We use these to.train our young pups to lead walking.

The best kind are those which are adjustable around the neck and body so they can be fitted as pups grow and also to many different shape pups.

If anyone has a clean XS or S (we don't need L or XL) harness in good, clean condition that they are no longer using please can you consider donating it to us.

We have a few drop points around the Wellington region. If you could please PM us we will message you the details of the closest to you.

The wonderful team at Blossom Valley Aston Norwood very kindly let some of our committee and fosters take some of our pups for a photo shoot on Wednesday morning.

It was a sunny, if cold day but we all had a blast getting some shots of our fosters in amongst the beautiful spring Cherry Blossom, azaleas and camelias which were all in full colour. These have provided awesome backgrounds to their photos.

We highly recommended heading out for a look, but if you want to see the cherry blossom (its gorgeous) the team have warned this will really be its last weekend.

Thank you so much Mark and Team for letting us come along.

Freedom ride - Callie

Sweet Callie was sooo happy to get her freedom ride from the pound today. She had been there for over a month whilst we tried to find a place for her to go.

As luck would have it, she ended up going straight to trial adoption with a lovely family who have a big backyard for her to run around and are close to a park and the beach!

Lots of fun times ahead for Callie once she's settled in. We love a good outcome ❤️

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we write this post.

Darling Murray was with his foster dad when they were hit by another car on the motorway. As a result of the accident, Murray ran away and was later found dead. He had been hit by a car.

We are all devastated, especially his wonderful fosters who loved Murray so very much.

Rest in love sweet boy. We will miss your wonderful gentle nature.

Foster families needed

Every day we are having to turn down dogs and pups in need because we don't have the right fosters to place them with.

Almost anyone could become a fosterer, but we need to try and fit the needs of the dogs involved to the fosters lifestyle so we can set everyone up to succeed.

Currently we are short on fosters without cats or other small animals (friendly dogs is OK) who can take adult dogs or older pups who have never lived with them before.

We are also short on puppy fosters. This is mostly because we have a larger number of incoming pups than ever before. Puppy fostering is very rewarding with cute fluffy cuddles and puppy love.
However, you need to be prepared for worms, accidents inside whilst toilet training and sometimes a disturbed nights sleep. Our experienced puppy fosters are there to help support you through this with advice and humour!

If you would like to become a foster with us we provide advice and support (from the committee and our experienced fosters), food, bedding, crates, toys, collars, leads, bowls, supplements and medication when needed.

All we ask is that you provide love, training, take them to vet appointments and adoption meetings.

For more information and and our online foster form visit: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/foster

We do ask for applicants to be available to take on a foster either now or in the very near future and be in the Greater Wellington Region. We find it easier to support people with what they need if they are closer.

Our fosters are our Superheroes. They are the reason we can save lives. Join us and help us save lives.

Dog of the week - Clarissa (aka Honey). 6mths old, female, Lab x Smithfield.

Clarissa (nicknamed Honey because she is so sweet), is the happiest go lucky pup you'll ever meet. She is besotted with her foster brother, and you'll find them playing tug of war, chase, or curled up together on the couch.

Honey is super intelligent and has been learning tricks, as well as being well behaved in her crate when left alone.

She loves all people including children and is good with other dogs. She enjoys adventures and any chance to get in the water, whilst being quite partial to a cuddle too. Honey will make an amazing dog for an active family who want a loving pooch.

If you are looking for the perfect pup to take on adventures with you this summer and snuggle up to in winter, then this is your girl.

Please go to: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt to find out more and complete an online form to meet her.

So some of you would have already seen this post either at the HUHANZ page or one of the other rescue pages who are sharing it. Why are we all sharing it? Because puppy farming is animal abuse and we would all dearly love to see an end to it.

We know all of you who follow us are dog lovers. Help us to make a difference by:

1. Sharing either this post or the HUHA post from their page. Spread the word far and wide. The only way currently to reliably stop puppy farming is to make it unprofitable. So let's stop buying from these people and the pet stores they are supplying.
2. Sign HUHA's petition. The law needs changing, we need massive public disgust and pressure to stop these awful practices. If you know politicians, educate them.
3. When you or people you know are looking to get a dog either adopt or buy from a reputable breeder. Reputable breeders are usually registered with DogsNZ. They are breeding for the love of the breed and are invested in the welfare of their dogs and where their pups go. They usually don't have to advertise on Trade Me because their reputation means they have a list of people waiting for pups.

If these people weren't puppy farmers they would have taken HUHA up on their very generous offer to desex and provide surgery for these poor dogs. They didn't because they don't care about the dogs, they only care about the money.

Please do not buy from these people telling yourself you are "rescuing" the dog by doing so. What you are doing is enabling further abuse of the dogs left behind and buying yourself a poorly socialized, poorly bred pup that will most likely cost your more money and heart break as you pay to deal with its problems.

This is not the first puppy farm to come to our attention in recent times. None of them have been completely stopped despite people involved working tirelessly to try and make it happen.

Education is needed so people DO NOT buy from puppy farms. This will not see the end of purebred dogs or dogs available to buy rather than adopt (which some people are claiming🙄). But it will see an increase in healthy, happy well adjusted dogs and pups. Which is what everyone who cares about dogs wants.

Flint is currently in a home with other dogs and older children. He is a large boy, but has a big heart ❤️

Sometimes the dogs who come to us need a bit more help so they can get ready for adoption. Their past means that they need the additional support of an animal behaviourist.

We have been working with Cheryl Trust Practitioner NZ since we started in 2019. She is the only person trained in the The Trust Technique in NZ and Australia. Cheryl has had a life changing impact on several of our rescues over the years.

Currently she is helping Rosie and Tess's fosters build their confidence and trust in people, their environment and strange dogs. With the dedication of their fosters to following Cheryl's advice, these two dogs are on the way to enjoying life more.

Cheryl not only works with Ellie's but other rescues across NZ. She loves all dogs and is dedicated to helping them live a more peaceful life.

Thank you Cheryl for your continued support of our rescues.

Thank you so much The Pet Centre and their Upper Hutt customers for your support.

We often receive calls from Social Workers at local hospitals who have patients with dogs that need urgent help and we always make sure we help. 2 weeks ago we got a call about a wee dog that had been trapped alone in a caravan for a number of days after the owner had an accident. We hopped straight in the car and found little Luna shaking and hiding in the back. Once she knew we were there to help she quickly became the friendliest and happiest dog you will ever meet.

The biggest thank you to Paws 4 A Groom - Small Dog Grooming who groomed her for free after hours, this is despite them being booked out till next year!! As you can see from the photos she is feeling a lot more comfortable now she can see where she is going.

Luna is having a wonderful time playing with her new dog friends and human baby and is possibly the most well behaved and easy going dog we have ever met. Her owner has a wee way to recovery so she will be part of the pack for the next wee while.

It's International Dog Day

This day was started in 2004 to celebrate all dogs - pure and mix breed BUT mainly to raise awareness for dogs in shelters and in need of adoption.

So in the spirit of International Dog Day, what would make these dogs day would be to find their forever home! These beautiful pups and dogs have NO suitable applications at this time.

So please help us to find them their new families. Consider adopting or if you can't, please share this post so as many people see it as possible. The more people who see them, the more likely the right family will find them.

Information about adopting and our forms can be found here: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt

Poppy and Pups update

A wonderful news update for the wonderful Poppy - she has found her forever home!

In a beautiful bit of the universe truly looking out for Poppy, her perfect family emailed us the day after her foster and I discussed what her prefect home would look like and our plans to start advertising her!

We immediately set a meeting and it was love all round from the first. Poppy (now Luna) is now starting to settle into the routine of her new family. Here is what they have to say:

She really does have a lovely nature. She is gentle with our young daughters and puts young Cooper (foster dog friend) in his place when he gets too much! She walks beautifully on lead and isn’t fussed by unfamiliar people, dogs or vehicles. She also loves playing with the fetch toys and having a good chew!

We are so happy that Poppy (now Luna) has found her people, we are now starting to look for forever homes for her babies Frida and Rosco.

If you are interested in adopting one of them, just head to www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt and click on their profile photos.

Rescue never rests

Last Sunday we were all exhausted from our birthday event and hoping for a quiet day to recover (there is never a day off we have learned over the past 5 years).

These puppers had other ideas.

We were contacted and asked if we could save these beautiful pups from sad situations where they were unwanted and needed moving urgently. So our wonderful foster team stepped up and a joint effort saw them coming safely to us during that nasty rain storm we had.

The beautiful black girls (Meg & Cleo) came to us from Taranaki. They are about 4-5mths old, kelpie x heading x huntaway. They are highly trainable, raised rural and good with other animals as well as people. They are available for adoption now. Go to www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt for a form.

The little pups will be available for adoption in a couple of weeks. Spring, Smudge and Sage are 7 weeks old Husky x bull breed (we think). They are currently very cute and fluffy but will be large dogs when full grown.

Huge thanks to our amazing foster team who opened their homes to these pups on short notice and braved the horrible weather conditions to help make it happen.

We always need more fosters, we have a wait list for dogs and pups. If you are interested in helping us save lives, then please go to our website and have a look at the foster page for more information and an application form: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/foster

Waitangirua Community event – Microchipping and a bag of dog food for just $10

Ellie’s Canine Rescue & Rehome will be at Waitangirua Mall car park from 1pm to 2pm (or if we run out of food and microchips, we will leave earlier) on Sunday 25 August.

We have 20 microchips and two pallets of dog food to help those families struggling in these hard times. This is a first in first served basis.

The $10 covers the cost to us of registering your dog on the NZ Companion Animal Register – this is NOT the council database but a different one that vets and rescues use.

We will not be providing details to the council; this is the owner's responsibility.

Advantages of microchipping and having your dog registered on the NZ Companion Animal register (NZCAR):

1. If your dog gets lost and a stranger finds them, they can take them to a rescue or vet who will scan them for free and call the person on the database – no need to involve the pound

2. If your dog gets lost and the pound collect it, being microchipped will save you a potential $300 fine and they will be able to contact you quicker, so you are less likely to incur impound fees

3. It is proof of ownership – no one else will be able to claim your dog as theirs. Stolen dogs have returned to their owners even years later because they are on NZCAR.

If you have a dog and you are not sure whether it is microchipped or registered on the NZCAR, we will scan them and check for you. If they are microchipped but not registered, we can register them for you for $10. You will still get a bag of food.

We will also be taking details on the day of people interested in having their dog desexed through us at our cost.

Conditions of attending:

If your dog is sick with symptoms of vomiting and or diarrhea, please do not bring them to this event – get them to a vet.

If your dog is aggressive towards other dogs or humans please bring them in a muzzle and under control of an adult. We reserve the right to refuse to microchip a dog if we are concerned for our safety.

If your dog or pup is not fully vaccinated, please either carry them or leave them in your car.

We would like to thank: PBT Transport who made this possible.

Sparkles Update!!

It has been a busy few weeks for Sparkles who arrived to us with no name and a mouth full of rotting teeth. Thanks to the incredible team at Raumati Vet Centre Sparkles has had her dental operation which removed over 7 teeth and her blood tests came back great. The next step is desexing her in a weeks time. We are so grateful to Dr Erin who was so touched by Sparkles story (and Dick) that she donated her time and expertise and paid for Sparkles treatment. Raumati Vet Centre really are the most caring and compassionate team.

We were contacted by a lovely gentleman called Dick. Since losing his beloved Murphy the westie to old age he had been so lonely and needed a new friend to take care of. When Dick met Sparkles it was love at first sight. Dick said Sparkles has given his life meaning again. We visited them this morning and Sparkles is being spoilt rotten with daily walks to the beach and around the retirement village. They are a match made in heaven, talk about perfect timing!

We often get elderly small dogs and it makes us so happy to see them bringing joy to retirees and enjoying their pain free second chance at life.

The pups were a huge hit with the residents (and staff) and happily snuggled in for cuddles whilst we chatted about the pups and rescuing dogs.

A big thank you to Angus and his class mates at Hutt Valley High School. For their Business Studies project they prepared packs for adopters with useful information on all things dogs, toys and a collar. It is so awesome you guys used this project to think about how you could help rescued dogs and educate the public on dog welfare. You deserve top marks from your Teacher!
