Sensory garden updates - #1

Work is slowly progressing. Our working bee day with the wonderful crew from NZDF was a lot of cleaning, clearing and de-nailing our donated wood and pallets. We also managed to get the frame of the small puppy zone up.

We were privileged to be donated some fencing from GreatWhite Landscaping: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095016270028&mibextid=ZbWKwL

This fencing has made a huge difference to a very insecure section of the back fence (see photos for before and after) and will help keep our dogs and pups secure when they are exploring the sensory garden, so thank you so much for your generous donation.

Happy New Year from everyone at Ellie’s.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us through 2024. We appreciate everything that people have done for us from sharing posts, donating, fostering, adopting, providing advice or working with us in partnership - every action helps us to save more dogs.

Thank you so much to all the people who donate funds to us that help us pay our vet bills. We honestly would not be here without you.

Thank you to all our fosterers. You open your homes and hearts to these dogs and pups freely and ask nothing in return. You are our heroes.

Thank you to Cheryl Trust Practitioner NZ for providing behaviourist help and support to our fosterers and new owners so our rescues can heal. You've helped so many, we are so grateful to have you on this journey with us.

Thank you to Your Dog's Way for creating a great online puppy training course for our fosterers and new puppy owners to help them set pups up right from the start.

Thank you to Animates Porirua and Animates Lower Hutt and Masterpet New Zealand and PBT Wellington for providing us with dog food for our rescues and to distribute to those struggling in the community.

Thank you to Maidstone Veterinary Clinic, Rappaw Veterinary Care, Central Hutt Veterinary Clinic, Raumati Vet Centre, Vets on Riverbank for providing advice and care to our rescues.

Thank you Jo Moore Photographer, glennelvy.com and Alex Colliss for donating your time to take amazing photos of our dogs and pups to help them get adopted.

Thank you to everyone who has adopted a dog from us. Thank you for giving a rescue dog or pup the home it deserves.

We are so grateful for all of you. We can save dogs lives because of your support. It takes a community of like minded people to put dogs first to make rescue successful.

We wish you all the best 2025.

Merry Christmas to all of our followers and supporters from the Ellie’s crew.

Since our first year we have always worked with local Animal Control to take a dog or pup on so they don't have to spend Christmas in the pound.

This year we took on Pepper. Pepper is a cute female, 5mth old, small staffy mix.

Pepper is settling in happily with her fosters.

Pepper wishes all the other doggos out there a Meri Kirihimete and would love to see their Christmas Day photos.

Max would love to be in his forever home for Christmas.

Max is a beautiful 15 week old male, Staffy x Labrador. Max is currently in foster with other dogs and a cat. He needs a home with older children (10yrs plus).

Max is smart and very loyal, he loves his people and would prefer a home where his people work from home or can take him to work with them. Max would love a home where his family would take him on adventure bush walks or runs rather than a busy dog park.

If you are interested in meeting Max then please go to: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt to find out more and complete a pre-adoption form.

Community microchipping and free dog food event - Naenae Saturday 14 December 1-2pm.

We will be in the carpark of Wa Ora Montessori School (at the top of Rata Street, Naenae) on Saturday from 1-2pm with free bags of dog food and 24 microchips for people whose dogs or pups who don't already have one.

Microchipping will cost $10 which is the fee we pay to register your dog on the NZCAR database - this is NOT the council database but the one that vets and rescues use. You will be responsible for providing the council your microchip details.

Advantages of microchipping and having your dog registered on the NZ Companion Animal register (NZCAR):

1. If your dog gets lost and a stranger finds them, they can take them to a rescue or vet who will scan them for free and call the person on the database.

2. If your dog gets lost and the pound collect it, being microchipped will save you a potential large fines as they will be able to contact you quicker.

3. It is proof of ownership – no one else will be able to claim your dog as theirs.

If you have a dog and you are not sure whether it is microchipped or registered on the NZCAR, we will scan them and check for you. If they are microchipped but not registered, we can register them for you for $10. You will still get a bag of food.

For food and microchips it will be a case of first in first served, if we run out of food before 2pm we will leave earlier. Only one large bag of food per household.

A quick appeal for your patience.

This is a really busy time for everyone right? Some of us are trying to wind up jobs before the holidays. Some of us are in the kinds of jobs which are in their busiest time of year. The kids are all finishing school, we have Christmas shopping to get, decorating to do, cards to write, food to cook, the events that somehow fill our calendar at this time of year and possibly planning for trips away from home.

Now add into that schedule running an animal rescue. Like the most animal rescues, we fit running Ellie's in around our work and family responsibilities. It's having the responsibilities of a second job which, if you allow it, will suck up every spare hour of your week. It is also, the busiest time of the year for animal rescue with an increase of surrender requests as well as people seeking a pet to settle into their lives whilst they have extra time over the summer holidays.

We are trying our hardest to get to you. We are sorry if it is taking a little longer than normal. Please have patience, your query is important to us, BUT we have over 45 dogs and pups in our care across the Wellington region at various stages in the adoption process.

Running a rescue means A LOT of time on the phone, on the road, fundraising, planning events, dealing with unexpected emergencies (today's is a puppy with a broken leg) and sometimes it's the admin time which gets prioritised last.

So, please we ask for your patience and understanding. We will get to you. And if we are slightly frazzled when we do, please be kind.

Thank you

UPDATE 18.12.24 - Girl 3 and Boy 1 are still waiting for sponsors - we have added another couple of photos. Girl 3 is the biggest and fluffiest of the litter and very cuddly. Boy 1 is a happy and active boy.

**so far only girl 4 has a confirmed sponsor. Please let us know if you'd like to sponsor one of the others**

Check out our latest arrivals!

These affectionate 7 week old pups came to us via All Paws Count Murupara Trust after a family in Rotorua reached out to them.

Mumma dog (a German Shepherd x Shar-pei, dad is a Rottweiler) had an unplanned litter which unfortunately put them in violation of their tenancy agreement. Despite the pups not yet being old enough to leave mum, the family were told to remove the pups or face being evicted with two young children in the run up to Christmas.

Desperately, they reached out to multiple rescues. We are all full to overflowing at this time of year, but we all scrambled to see if we could help and luckily our wonderful fosters here at Ellie’s came through for us again.

The family have committed to having mum desexed to avoid this ever happening again.

These pups have obviously been loved and taken care of, they are friendly, confident and actively seek human interaction.

We are looking for sponsors to help us care for these pups until they are adopted.

A sponsorship of $100 will get you naming rights for your pup plus a digital sponsorship certificate with a photo of your pup. This could be a great Christmas gift for someone in your life who loves animals or a treat to yourself.

If you go to: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/donate our bank details are available there. Please put references Sponsorship and your chosen pups name. Details are also there on how to get a donation receipt for tax purposes.

The pups genders are in comments. Put your chosen name in there. We do reserve the right to request a change of name if we feel it is inappropriate. Please click "all comments" to check no one has named the pup before you.

This is Soul. He came into our care today.

He is safe thanks to the work of the fosterers of two rescue organisations (Ellie’s and All Paws Count Murupara Trust).

He was found dumped near a lake outside Murupara with a fish hook through his lip. We don't know where the rest of his litter or mum are. We pray they are safe. Soul has been pooping out rubbish like tin foil so obviously he has been alone long enough to scavenge for food.

I don't know where to begin with how unnecessary his situation was but here I go.

Firstly he shouldn't have been born. If you don't have homes arranged for the litter your dog is having before she is even pregnant then don't breed. If the litter has so little value to you that you'll dump them, don't breed. Get your dog fixed.

Secondly, if you care so little about dogs that you are willing to dump a defenseless puppy and walk away knowing it will most likely die alone, scared, hungry and in pain then you shouldn't be allowed animals at all. Much less be breeding them.

Thirdly, there is no reason to dump young pups at all when there are rescues, local animal control and vets who will take them.

There is NO excuse for dumping animals except you are a lazy, uncaring, waste of space of a human being.

There is a special place in hell for people like you.

Yes. I am angry. So angry.

Soul got lucky, there were many beautiful people willing to wrap their arms around him and get him where needed to go. Safe, warm, fed and pain free.

Thank you to the amazing fosterers who helped save Soul. Not all heroes wear capes.
