Dog Of the Week: Rosie

Rosie is a lovely 11 month old female, Staffy X. She is medium sized and isn't likely to get much bigger.

Rosie is a sweet girl who has come from a rough background.
She is shy when first meeting and can take a bit of time to settle with strangers.
Once she knows you, she quickly wants all the love and pats from you.
She loves cuddles, finding soft things to cuddle up on and belly rubs.

She loves her crate and will go there for some quiet time during the day.
She knows to sit and stay before eating.
She has excellent recall and is good at 'stay'.
She is toilet trained.
She sleeps throughout the night in her crate but does like to know that someone is close by.
She loves treats and to chew on a good bone.

Rosie is still learning that she can play with toys.
She likes going for walks and is learning to walk on lead nicely though is not so confident meeting strangers out and about.

Good with cats: Unknown
Good with dogs: Dog Selective
Good with children under 10: No. Isn't good with loud noises & sudden movements.
Good with children over 10: Yes
Needs fencing at least: 1.2m high
Can be left alone during work hours: Yes.

Ellie’s Canine Rescue are based in the Greater Wellington region, depending on the dog we do adopt out of the Wellington region but request any potential owner meet us and the dog in person and if successful drive home with the dog. We do not ship dogs unmet. Undesexed dogs and puppies are not rehomed outside of the Greater Wellington Region.

If you are interested in meeting Rosie, own your house and can give a loving home then please complete this online form: https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=vh3049&method=online_form_html&formid=42 (or visit http://www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz and click on Adopt).

Foster home found. Thank you everyone.

Urgent foster or foster to adopt home needed - Kea has been in the pound too long.

Kea - is a beautiful, medium size, 1 year old female American Staffy mix.

She is in the pound due to no fault of hers and the owners haven't claimed her. I met her and she was sweet and friendly towards people and dogs. She was a playmate of the pup we took from the pound a couple of weeks ago (now called Nikau). There were children in the home she came from. We do not know how she would be with cats.

Kea has good basic obedience and is smart and keen to learn. She is a teenager, so will need a section with space to run as well as someone with time to continue her training.

If you would like to foster Kea then we have foster forms here: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/foster We can discuss foster to adopt options once we have your form if this is what you are interested in.

Like us, the pounds are currently seeing a massive increase in the number of people trying to surrender their dogs. The Animal Control Officers are trying to rehome the good dogs who pass behavioural tests either directly or through rescues. They do not want to put these dogs down, but they have limited spaces to hold them.

We have a waiting list of people wanting to surrender their dogs and pups to us for various reasons. We want to be able to help more dogs and pups but we do not have enough free fosterers.

Recently some of our wonderful fosterers have foster failed (adopted their foster dog) which is great for the dog, but means we need a new fosterer to take their place.

If you are interested in fostering Kea, or any other dog or puppy, then please go to our website to find out more and fill out the form. We need people now and over the Christmas period.

Anyone else got a splooter or Similar?
Show Photos!

Foster a dog or puppy for cute and funny photos.

Almost anyone can become a fosterer, but we try and fit the needs of the dogs to the fosters lifestyle so we can set everyone up to succeed.

Currently we are short on fosters without cats or other small animals (friendly dogs is OK) who can take adult dogs or older pups who have never lived with them before.

We also need puppy fosters. Puppy fostering is very rewarding with cute fluffy cuddles and puppy love.
However, it does involve worms, accidents inside whilst toilet training and sometimes a disturbed night's sleep.
Our experienced puppy fosters are there to help support you through this with advice and humour!

If you would like to become a foster with us, we provide advice and support (from the committee & our experienced fosters), food, bedding, crates, toys, collars, leads, bowls, supplements and medication when needed.

All we ask is that you provide love, training, take them to vet appointments and adoption meetings.

For more information and our online foster form visit: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/foster

We do ask for applicants to be available to take on a foster either now or over the holidays and be in the Greater Wellington Region.
We find it easier to support people with what they need if they are closer.

Our fosters are our Superheroes. They are the reason we can save lives.
Join us and help us save lives.

Exciting new project! Ellie’s Canine Sensory Garden.

At Ellie's we are very passionate about socialisation. Socialisation is not just how many people or other canines a pup or dog meets, it's about their experiences in the world in a safe and positive way.

The most important time to socialize a puppy is between 4 and 16 weeks old. During this time, puppies are most receptive to new experiences and are less cautious.

Puppies that aren't socialised properly at a young age may be more likely to develop behavioural problems, fears, and phobias as adults.

What a lot of people struggle with is during this age bracket, puppies are not fully vaccinated so they are worried about the risk of pup catching parvo.

In our guide we send out to new dog owners, we go through some safe ways to socialise puppies who are in the age bracket, e.g. carrying them around the block, to school pick, pet friendly cafe's and hardware stores in your arms, a puppy carrier or pup buggy to help them get used to traffic sounds, cars, buses etc.

We are also going to build a sensory garden in one of our Founder's back garden. She has lived there for nearly 10yrs with only vaccinated or parvo free dogs or pups on the property. The back garden is securely fully fenced so there have no wandering strays visiting.

We are going to build a smaller puppy (4-10 weeks ish) specific area with a small splash pad, digging pit, dog safe plants and tiles of different types of flooring and textures for the pups to explore in a safe, fenced off and shaded area. Puppy fosters will be able to bring their pups over to explore this area.

We are building a bigger version for older pups and dogs to explore. We are also planning to hold puppy adoption meetings here.

We have been lucky enough that a group of 10 office workers from the NZDF DEMO unit have volunteered to come and help us out for some of the initial build on 20 November from 1-4pm. We know that the project will go beyond this, but we are excited for their support to make a start.

We recently reached out to Bunnings Petone and they have supplied us with tne amazing goodies in the photo. We had some lino donated from Carpet Court Upper Hutt. We also have wooden pallets, 12 car tyres and bags of stones.

We reaching out because we are still after some resources and we know that people here will either have some or know someone who will have some.

We need:
-soil (for filling existing holes and planting)
-another 12 car tyres
-3m x 2m pond liner
-30m of 4 x 1 boxing rs
-3m x 3m astro turf
-12m of 6 x 2
-6m of 8 x 2 rs
-4 x 4.8 fence rails
-6 x 1m to 1.2m warratahs
-30m small wire cable
-10 x 4 inch galv eye hooks
-2 x 1.8m x 3m brush fencing
-2 x bags Rounded pebbles
-Landscape screws 20 x 125 mm and 15 x 200 mm
-1.2m3 sand for sand pit
-Cement and builders Mix to do 5.8m x 1.5m x 50mm path .5m3

Please comment or DM us if you can help out. This is a very exciting project that so far has only cost us petrol and time. We are determined to recycle & reuse as much as possible.

We'd like to thank the awesome team at Bunnings for their donation as well as our amazing team of fosters who have been helping us scavenge what we have so far.

We will be keeping you updated on our progress.

Dog of the week - Henry

The last of his litter waiting for his forever home- Henry is a an 8mth old Smithfield x Labrador. Henry is super affectionate and absolutely loves his people. His love of food also makes him easy to train.

Henry is looking for a home with experienced dog owners. Unfortunately, Henry was attacked on the lead by a small dog as a young pup which has lead to some leash reactivity and the need for slow introductions to new dogs. His fosters have been working on this with him and he needs a home who can continue this good work.

Henry has always been in foster with other dogs and loves their company so does not need to be an only dog. He is toilet and crate trained and has great basic obedience. He is a medium energy pup equally happy going for a run, a swim or cuddling on the sofa.

If you are interested in meeting this snuggly love bug, please go to: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt and complete the pre-adoption form found there.

This sweet 6-8mth old boy was super excited to get his freedom ride today.

After being unclaimed by his owners, he was in the pound a month waiting.

The Animal Control Officers reached out to us and seriously, how could we say no to this face?

He's happily exploring his new digs with his foster family and their dog now. They are going to get to know him a little better and pick a name for him.

Welcome to Ellie’s sweet boy.

Oh yay, it's fireworks season again 🙄

Every year we see self entitled people raging on Facebook that they are entitled to buy fireworks and let them off. That their dog or cat isn't scared so obviously everyone else is a useless owner because their animals are. Or their sense of self entitlement is so huge they actually don't care who they scare or hurt so long as they can have their fun.

If you are an animal lover, you won't buy fireworks.

Every year animals are scared, hurt or killed because of fireworks. That should be enough to see them banned, but nope unfortunately not.

There are heaps of petitions that you can sign to help raise awareness and maybe we might get attention from a sympathetic MP 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, considering how hard animal lovers have been campaigning for better animal welfare laws, banning Greyhound racing and getting dogs off the chain, I'm not holding my breath that we will see a law change over this soon. But I guess if we have to try because you never know. Here is a link to the new Animates petition: https://www.animates.co.nz/pawprint-petition?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm5e5BhCWARIsANwm06gwaOWwcm64_qPJ87HpFZsb-3VNmQk2mzoB4vpwMUtweIK0fzQcPy0aArtGEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

The fact that every year vets, animal rescues, the fire services, police and emergency departments all go on high alert and see an impact because of fireworks...who cares right? I mean these people are already overworked and under resourced so whats an added bit of pressure🥴.
As long as the self important get to waste their money on setting off a huge bang; let's face it, despite their claims it's not the pretty colour's because you can get low noise fireworks but it's the noisy ones that sell.

So the only thing that's going to stop fireworks sales is market forces. Don't buy them. Encourage your friends and family not to buy them. Please donate the money you would have spend to your favourite animal rescue instead.

If you are an animal lover, you won't buy fireworks.

Thank you so much Masterpet New Zealand for this very generous donation of Blackhawk puppy food. The fabulous Fabio was happy to pose to demonstrate the impressive stack of food.

We had literally opened our last bag when this pallet arrived so it was perfect timing.

Masterpet have been great supporters of Ellie’s through their Blackhawk and Vitapet brands and we really appreciate everything they do to help our rescue.

EDIT - all named now. Thank you so much.

Meet our latest litter of pups looking for sponsorship.

These sweet 6 week old Staffadors (Staffy x Labs) came to us via Rappaw Veterinary Care.

They had come to the Rappaw teams attention when spotted in a trolley with a man giving them away outside a supermarket. He told them he couldn't afford them and was feeding them bread. He gratefully surrendered them to Rappaw who asked us if we could take them in.

These 6 pups are active, happy and friendly. They took a recent puppy cuddle meeting at Cutlers in their stride and were very popular with the children.

As of yet they don't have names so they are looking for sponsors.

$100 gets you the naming rights and an update for your chosen pup and will be gratefully received towards their upkeep. Like a lot of rescues at the moment we have seen a decrease in donations with the increase of dogs needing care. Last month we spent $3,800 on food and we are already out of puppy food. Their sponsorship will help cover the costs of their food, flea & worm treatment and other needs until they are adopted.

Please comment on the photo of the pups below you'd like to name with your choice. You can go to www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/donate for our bank details. Please put sponsor and the pup number as the reference.

These pups will be vaccinated and microchipped at 8 weeks old and ready for their new homes. If you'd like to be meet a pup with the view to adopt please complete the online form at: www.elliesk9rescue.co.nz/adopt.
