What happens when you are training your dog at WCOC and it rains? You put your coat on, your dogs coat on and you go to training! Awesome turnout this week for Grade 1 and 2 despite the persistent rain! And great work from all dogs!!!! Youโ€™ve all been practicing very hard!

Like we teach in Grade 1 ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

Today I saw three very different dogs for three very different reasons but I said the following to all three because these 3 simple things can transform your dog's experience outside.

๐™Ž๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐™™๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ
You're not power walking or trying to squeeze the maximum amount of steps into the shortest amount of time. You're just spending some quality time outdoors with your pal. Slow down. Be present.

A longer lead allows for more freedom of movement, more natural movement, allows you to see more clearly where your dog chooses to be and results in less time under tension. The minimum I'd suggest is 6 feet.

๐™‡๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ข ๐™จ๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™›๐™›
We are visual creatures. Our dogs are olfactory creatures. They make sense of the world around them through smell. They obtain information via scent in ways we can't even conceive...who has passed by? how long ago? were they humans? dogs? rabbits? mice? Were they boys? girls? what's their reproductive status? old? young? healthy? ill? relaxed? stressed? Taking a dog for a walk and not allowing them to sniff is like asking a person to walk around blindfolded.

I say these things to new puppy owners, to the owners of dogs who pull on the lead, whose dogs are reactive or frustrated or overexcited or anxious.

I say it to almost everyone because these three simple things can make a ๐™๐™ช๐™œ๐™š difference to your dog's experience and, as a result, to their behaviour. It can settle dogs who are overwhelmed or overexcited by the world. It can help busy, frantic dogs drop down a gear or two. It can build confidence by allowing a dog to gather information about the world around them.

Try these three simple things the next time you are out with your dog and see how it changes the experience for both of you...

Obedience Ribbons Trials are about learning and trying new things, growing as a handler and building confidence and enjoyment in your dog. They are a place to try new things, new ideas in a more relaxed lower stress environment.

This Saturday, Marcus and Lola entered the Upper Hutt Ribbon Trial. Lola has been to several obedience shows and entered an Elementary once, but always been nervous and subdued in the new environment. Well this weekend that all changed! She gave a new toy a try and played with it both outside the ring and inside, having so much fun! She was outgoing and happy! Marcus works hard training Lola (not easy when sheโ€™s so small) and that hard work is now really paying off!!! Go little Lola! Great things ahead!

Thanks Fitztography for capturing these awesome moments!!!

Lola having an awesome time with her new toy. Even in training she wouldnโ€™t really play, now thatโ€™s all changed! Go Lola!

This weekend the WCOC Comp Obedience Team attended the Avalon Champ Test and was extremely successful! There was of course ribbons won, but the success was way more than that!

* Mica did an almost perfect heel round in Elementary 2, with amazing focus and perfect heel position!

* Roxy worked very hard in Elementary 2 and focussed brilliantly knowing her treat pouch was outside the ring! And nailed all 4 stays!

* Stanley got his confidence back in the ring and had a ball!

* Nox did a brilliant scent with a (on purpose) new, lightly scented cloth (with her eye on CDX Silver in the near future)

* Star didnโ€™t scratch in his scent and completed every exercise in every test and placed!

* Tui is getting better and better in every round, with improving focus and a lovely heel position!

* Ted did brilliant heelwork in Test B and kept everyone very entertained in all the other exercises!

Was also awesome catch up with McKenzie and Otto, who have moved out to the Hutt and the Avalon club but will always be our friends!

Another great weekend for WCOC Comp Team, this time at Wairarapa.

Highlights this weekend were Tedโ€™s awesome Test B round today placing 4th (only loosing 1.5 in his heelwork) and Mary-Ellenโ€™s first ever Beginners round today, which she completed right to the end and did really nice work in! Star also got a 3rd today with some very nice work. And Nox placed 5th in Test A yesterday.

Lots of other really nice work too from Annie who ran off for 5th and just missed out on a ribbon, Stanley who did beautiful heelwork in Test B and Tui who did some really nice work in Beginners too!

Theyโ€™ve done it! Today Chora and Nox competed in their third CD trial. After a lot of hard work and perseverance, and two attempts where they got their CD but missed the X by a whisker, Nox is now Riverview Supermoon Rising CDX CGCB!

So proud of them and how hard they have worked for this, never giving up โค๏ธ
