Rua is a soft-natured, sweet boy who also enjoys a bit of rough and tumble with his sister and foster brother.

He’s very cuddly and affectionate, always up for a snuggle, but equally happy to take himself off for a nap even with plenty of noise and chaos around him.

Rua is crate trained and sleeps through the night before bounding up, tail wagging, ready for breakfast. His healthy appetite makes him not only enthusiastic about mealtime but also easy to train as he grows. His toilet training is coming along nicely - he knows exactly what to do when he’s taken outside!

From Rotorua to Wellington - Now We're Ready to Be Named!

Hi hoomans! We’re 6 of 8 tiny tail-waggers who made the big trip from Rotorua to Wellington 2 weeks ago (thanks to some pawsome people with cars and kind hearts).

Now, we’re safe, settled in foster homes, and learning all about belly rubs, fun toys, and super snuggly beds. But… we’ve got one small problem.

WE DON’T HAVE NAMES YET.

Six Little Miracles - Growing Day by Day!

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who reached out offering to help bottle feed our precious pups - your kindness truly means the world.

We were incredibly lucky to hear from a wonderful woman whose own dog, Charlie, had just heartbreakingly lost her only puppy due to birth related complications. She offered to foster our litter, hoping Charlie might accept them - and oh, did she ever!

From the moment they arrived, Charlie took them in as if they were her own, showering them with love, and tending to their every need. While she didn’t have much milk, we left her with three pups - one tiny runt, one with a puncture wound, and one lucky extra - hoping medication would help her milk supply.

Although the medication didn't help, Charlie’s mothering instincts never wavered. Her amazing human stepped in to bottle-feed, while Charlie handled all the rest: cleaning, cuddling, and keeping a constant watch over her adopted babies. The bond is beautiful, and thanks to their incredible care, these pups are absolutely thriving.

Meanwhile, the other three puppies have been placed with a superstar vet nurse who is giving them the best start in life with round-the-clock care. They're feeding well and gaining weight every day. And could they get any cuter!?

From heartbreak to hope - we are so grateful for the village helping these little ones grow strong. Stay tuned for more updates!

CHAINED DOG ANNOUNCEMENT! 🎉 SPCA is thrilled with Minister Hoggard’s announcement today on the new regulations to target the prolonged tethering of dogs, which will come into effect 25 September.

The new regulations state that a person must not tether a dog if it results in observable signs of suffering linked to the prolonged tethering. Certain categories of vulnerable dogs including puppies and pregnant dogs cannot be tethered at all apart from in a few exceptional cases.

“This is long-fought and hard-won victory for dogs across Aotearoa,” says Dr Alison Vaughan, SPCA’s Scientific Officer. “These changes won’t solve every case overnight, but it’s a step forward that will permit our Inspectors to act in situations where they couldn’t before."

The changes are a direct outcome of SPCA's work behind the scenes with MPI and the Minister, the powerful backing of supporters through our ‘Break the Chain’ campaign and the work of other animal rescues including HUHANZ and Chained Dog Awareness NZ. Thank you to everyone who supported this important work and contributed to this long-awaited outcome 🙏
